I recently beat it on Famicom Disk, and it took foreeeeeeever. I spent most of the day trying to beat it, and yes, 8-4 is evil.

Don't give up man! The feeling you have once you finally beat is totally worth all the frustration ;)

The game goes beyond 8-4. ;)
I've beaten it many times over on Super Mario All-Stars. That was the first Super Nintendo game I ever got, and at the time it was the only game I owned period. I didn't get new games all that often, so I'd cycle through the old stuff over and over. Back then I was the master at all four of those Mario games. I'm sure I had every annoying trick in The Lost Levels memorized, but now I would probably die on the first stage, haha.

I couldn't stand that game. It went beyond merely "difficult" into the realm of "annoying" for me. Poison mushrooms and crap like that. I'd rather play a game that's difficult without being "tricky," like Contra or something.

I don't know how "tricky" it is....although it has taken me practically five weeks to get to 8-4

4-4 and 8-4 were the tougher levels in the game.
8-4 took me several days to finish.
interesting bit of trivia, if you can manage to beat the fds version 8 times it will allow you to access worlds a thru d and if you can beat the game without warping or continuing you can get to world 9 after 8.
good luck :"-)

The Youtube vids make it look easy. But that's what Youtube vids do.

Once.
I have it on the Virtual Console and on Super Mario All-Stars, but I haven't gotten that far since.

I've beat the game several times. It took me a while to get through the trickier levels, but I played this game a lot as a kid, and today I can beat it in one sitting.

Is this where I mention I beat the game twice...
Once the day I first played it in 3 lives
the next day on 1 life.
Haven't played it since then

I have it on Super Mario Brothers Deluxe for GBC, and never got past 8-2. It's one of those puzzle levels, and it is so unfair. Man, SMB Deluxe was such a great deal though.

I beat the lost levels years ago. Yes, it is very tough, but very satisfying once you do beat it, so stick with it!

I beat it a few times, I think 9-4 way way more evil than 8-4 though.

I don't want to brag here but I've beaten it many times.
To be honest, it's pretty easy. You just have to memorize certain patterns of gameplay.

It's pretty easy with the 100 lives trick in 1-1.
Now, Super Mario Bros. Special for the PC8801, that game's a bitch.

I beat the SNES and Game Boy Color versions, including the bonus levels. Good lord, it takes forever. Kept me busy over the summer, though!

Speaking of Bonus levels...does anyone remember how many there are? I'm on A-4 right now.

Goes right up to D-4, as Mr. Blitzwing256 suggests.
