I've been debating on buying a PS3 with my tax return or not. I though about looking out for a 60GB due to BC, however, I still use my PS1 for my playstation games and if I get a PS3, I'll still keep my PS2.

Aside from BC, would there be any other reason not to buy a 40GB?

Not to thread jack, but I have a question too. Does anyone know if the PS3 upconverts DVD's?

Yes it does upconvert DVDs. If you don't care about BC, then there's no real reason not to get a 40GB since you can upgrade the hard drive whenever you want anyway.

According to Engadget, no.

Q: Does the PS3 really upconvert DVDs?

A: Sorry, no, it actually doesn't. We popped in a regular DVD (The Matrix) and it dropped our 1080p display down to 720 x 480p. We pulled it out, and it went back to 1080p. So for right now, the PS3 does not upscale DVDs, but instead just leaves them at extended def. Bummer.

EDIT: Since that was posted, a new firmware (1.80) added this feature. So yes it do.

the ps3 upconverts dvds only if you're using an hdmi cable, and if you're totally happy with playing ps1 and ps2 on their systems, go with a 40. get a 60 if you want to play your ps2 games upscaled, i haven't tried ps1 upscaling, so i'm not sure if it does that too.
