Noruska, or anyone out there with the super knowledge, I needs your helps.
I am at 3.40 0E-A and I guess need the new 3.71-3.99 to play newer games (I am not going to install the regular firmware.)
What steps do I need to take to get it up there? Also, I'm only used to the ol' auto installers, so if there are some, that would be nice.
Thanks in advance champs.

Since you're still on 3.40 OE, you need to upgrade to 3.52 M33-3 or -4 first before you upgrade to any of more recent custom firmwares. Once you get that on your PSP, then you can go straight to 3.90 M33.
I THINK you can skip 3.51 M33 and go straight to 3.52 M33 from 3.40 OE, but I'm not 100% positive on that. Can anyone else confirm?
Here's the auto-installers I use:

EDIT: Yeah, it looks like you can skip the 3.51 M33 install. So your upgrade path should look like this:
3.40 OE -> 3.52 M33 -> 3.52 M33-4 -> 3.90 M33

Unfortunately I'm too tired to do it myself, but head on over to psp-hacks.com and check out the programs they have there. I haven't been there in a while, but I'm pretty sure custom firmware is under the psp hacks category. If all else fails, go to their live chat, there are almost always people there who are willing to help.

Thanks Norkusa. Got up to 3.90 m33-2
I just have a slight problem (a search on the net shows other people having similar problem, no fix yet?)
My gamesaves show up as corrupt data and do not load anymore.
Not sure why that is.
Anyone know?

Did you format your memory stick after updating to 3.90?

interestingly enough a while back I did a CFW install for someone and my friend's saves were all corrupted...never found out why. think you have a clue or some point of reference I can follow norkusa?

Yep.
Also, since I'm on fat 1001, and had the 1.50 kernel, did I need to install that 1.50 kernel update? I did, because it says for fat psps to install the update to run homebrew in 3.90.

Oh no, you got me right. I don't need my PSP firmware re-done, the other guy does. Enjoy your sleep, man.

Right, skipping the 1.50 kernel shouldn't matter since you need to run the 3.90 kernel to install the update.
Apparently the savedata types changed with the 3.52 M33 custom firmware, so that's why saves from 3.40 OE aren't working. People are saying some saves do work though, so I guess it all depends on the game. It's real strange. Might have something to do with both CF's being written by two different people but they both use the official Sony updates, so it shouldn't really matter.
Possible Sony could have changed it themselves but I don't understand why they'd want to do that.

Yes, it's quite odd. Some work, some don't. Oh well.
Also, the game menu seems to go a little slower (scrolling through homebrew in the menu) but I heard someone say 3.90 takes longer to access the mem stick? Or some such.
