Can gaming consoles via RGB (Sega Genesis, SNES, Playstation 1, Playstation 2 etc) be connected to computer monitors that can accept RGB via 5 BNC connectors. The BNC cables are colored Grey, Blue, Green, Red and Black that connect from a PC to the monitors.

Thanks

Depends on the monitor's vertical refresh rate. If you have the manual or the specs for it and they say it supports 15KHz, 15,750Hz, or CGA, then they'll be able to be connected. If it doesn't, then you'll need something called an upscaler. Not good unless you like spending $200-300 on eBay.

If you can verify that, then you have your work cut out for you. First, you need to find out what sync modes it supports. If it supports composite sync, congratulations! All of the consoles listed will work with your monitor with just a BNC cable (more on that later). If it absolutely must have separate sync, then you'll need to get something called a sync separator and do a bit of soldering work (or have someone do it for you). The most common one used is the LM1881. (http://www.gamesx.com/misctech/lm1881.htm)

Next you need to get a cable. Good luck, as most RGB cables for consoles use something called SCART. So you'll need to get something to convert that to 5-BNC. There are a whole bunch of VGA-to-BNC converters, maybe there are SCART-to-BNC converters, I don't know, look it up yourself. So once you've got that taken care of, and figured out if your monitor can support the specific RGB mode that consoles use, you're all set.

Gotta love RGB. So user-friendly.

Gee, we were just talking about this a little while ago in http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=111814 .
