If you missed the February NAVA you should be kicking yourself. Go on, do it. Then check out the pictures:
http://www.digitpress.com/images/store
The tournament centered around a one-of-a-kind Atari 2600 game designed just for NAVA, and the March game will do likewise. I've even had a little personal input on the game, it's actually kinda funny and relates to the store itself and should hit home with some NAVA guests.
We were also visited by members of the www.screwattack.com community, including a few of their celebrities "The Angry Video Game Nerd" and "Captain S". We may be seeing more of these guys as well as others from screwattack.com in March. Let's make them feel at home!
February's NAVA even made the local paper, the NJ Herald News. Check out the two page spread!

Get the date to your boss/manager and request time off for that day. Usually if you get it to them in advance of almost a week and a half, they'll have no problem with it.

As seen on PBC-productions.com mainpage:
For the past 2 months, PBC has attended NAVA (North Atlatic Videogame Aficionados) meetings at a really cool indie game store in Clifton, NJ called Digital Press. Every last saturday of the month, gamers from the tri-state area gather to check out their VAST selection of new and retro games, sell their old games, and play in tournaments. The people are all friendly, and the store is a mecca for gamers. If you make it next month, be sure to check out the basement. Once you see it, you'll know why. PBC hopes to hold an event there this month or next. Stay tuned for details!

I'd just like to take this moment to reveal that I will be returning to the kitchen to create a culinary masterpiece ONCE AGAIN resembling a video game related item.
It's going to absolutely blow those Super Mario "? Blocks" out of the water.
SO, if you've heard stories about my sweet baked treat making abilities but haven't sampled them @ recent NAVAs ... be there for this one.
I promise you won't be disappointed.

The publicity is cool and all, but that basement is not for the general public.
Looks like I'm going to have to get someone to be a guard at NAVA from here on out. Personally I think the basement is an eyesore, and other than the sheer magnitude of "stuff", there really isn't much down there that isn't upstairs or is slated for eBay.
Related: I emailed both Captain S and The Angry Game Nerd regarding future cross-overs and coordination between us so I can be better prepared for the larger crowd. Haven't heard back from either so far.

Well as they say "One man's trash is another person's treasure" honesly it is a nice place to go when you need a breather from the crowd upstairs, like a VIP chill out room of quietness....
Also could have a VIP membership card for special NAVA attendees to gain entrence to the basement, show it to the 'Bouncer" and he will open the velvet rope and let him/her in. Be kinda funny....

That's a pretty good idea, actually.
You know, it isn't JUST a trust issue. My biggest gripe with people down there is that there are those who do not understand how anal I am about the way things are. It boils my bottom when I head down after NAVA to find games turned upside-down, not lined up in nice little stacks, or even moved three inches from where they were before. It may look like clutter but it's actually carefully organized and the more hands - especially those who do not understand my system or know how to put things back in exactly the same place they got them - the more time it takes me to put things back to the way they're supposed to be.

You know, Joe, you and I are right here on the same wavelength. When I was down there, I knew then exactly what you are saying now. To someone else's eye, it looks like a mess, but somehow I knew that you had a fix on precisely where everything was. I hardly touched anything because of that, and anything I did touch was put back the exact way I found it. My basement is organized in a similar fashion.

I knew that pretty much from taking my first step into the store. "Everything is organized, so put it back where you found it" seems to be obvious for me, after working in Toys R Us, where we would literally have 20 carts at the end of the day filled with misplaced items because customers were too lazy to put it back themselves. I agree with where your coming from though, the basement is different than the store.

Good idea, coldguy. It would be could to have a spcial membership card or VIP card or something, I nominate coldguy to be the guard as well, and you need to wear suit with cool sun shades!
Coldguy
03-05-2008, 10:53 AM
If I am the guard the barriers could be all the stuff in the trunk of my car, however I do need cool shades to imtimadate first timers hehehehe....
Now I think it is common sense that if something is moved or misplaced, you put it back EXACTLY the way it was. I blame people not going to libraries for this.
The next item then is what the card is going to look like and how does one get this super card? Any ideas?

It's funny. A few of the libraries I've been to have "return carts" because they're probably so sick of people putting things back in the wrong places they just said, "Screw it, we'll put it back. Just leave the book on this cart."

Just to give an update, I just finished unlocking all multiplayer stuff in Brawl (stages, characters, level editor options, etc.) so that will be included once you receive it.
Now I want to put this idea out there, and I do not want to "officially" offer this, but if it is cool with Joe I have no problem. So Joe if this is cool, let me know so I can get ready to prepare this, ok here goes:
Some of you who were at NAVA last month meet Devon, he is the "other guy" on PBC. He recently received emergency surgery and has the bills to prove it. He is strapped for cash and can not do anything for two months except stay at his parents and rest. If you want to see the full gravity of this check out this website, it will explain it better. http://lovefordevon.wordpress.com/
So....I would like to propose a charity tourney for him. I want to do a full 32 man tourney (or more if the demand is there) with $10 an entry the winner of the tournament will get a bunch of things from my collection, including a travel TV set for those console on the go gamers. All money will then be donated to Devon's fund so that he can recover. Any other donations will be accepted but if you want to donate before the event do it on the site above.
I am not asking you to do this because I am a fan of his work, I am asking you to do this to help out another human being that is need of help. Joe, let me know if this idea is ok with you.

This is from the website:
On Thursday, February 28, Devon underwent emergency surgery. He thought it was the Vietnamese food he’d eaten when in fact it was far worse. They had to cut him open and take care of his intestines and bowel. Fun. He’s been recovering for days in a hospital bed with hospital food and hospital painkillers. He’s getting all hospital-ed out, and hopefully he’ll be released soon. After he does, his mom’s gunna take care of him in his hometown for at least two months.
As he’s healing, there’s another stabbing pain that will take a much longer time to recover from. And that’s the pain of the hospital bill. He needs our help. There won’t be enough discounts from the government to help him. And something will need to happen with his rent so his roommates aren’t put out. If you can help him out in any way, please do. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 dollars or 20, it’s just a bit of help to get him thru this hard time. We need to let him know that he’s not alone and that we’re here to support him.

Alright, we all know about Devon's situation over at lovefordevon.wordpress.com, now it is time to give back and kick some ass. At the next NAVA meeting (March 29th, see www.digitpress.com for details) there will be a Brawl tournament! The entry fee is 10 dollars and it will be 1v1, the winner will get assorted items from my collection including a portable TV to brawl on the go. Signups will occur around 5 PM at the event and all proceeds will go to the love for Devon fund. If you can please come out to help someone in need.
This was copied to every forum I am subscribed to, if you can please pass the word on so that we can get a good turnout.

Items off, I hope? And will we be able to use any controller? I could probably get at least two people to come, possibly three.
I know it's early to start talking about banned stages or counterpick only stages, etc. I won't make a fuss about that.

I'm thinking BYOC, the finer rules can be hammed out later, let me know what you suggest.

BYOC would be a good plan. Though it might be a good idea to have at least one or two extra controllers just on the off chance someone not "in the know" wants to participate. It shouldn't really be much of an issue. I just was wondering if you were going to mandate the Wiimote+Nunchaku combo like the Gamestop tournaments did. I didn't go but I can only imagine the headaches that caused.
My only real suggestion is no items. It's just too random for any real tournament when a starman just happens to fall on a guy's head. You may as well have a rock/paper/scissors tourney otherwise. Random stage selection would probably be best to keep it as fair as possible. Maybe loser picks if this is a "best of" competition (for the sake of time it probably shouldn't be).
We don't know of any abusable glitches or infinites yet so there's no point in going down that road.
Coldguy

I am thinking low items, and starmen can be turned off to avoid cheapness.

I don't understand why people play Smash Brothers with no items/no randomness in stages. It's not Street Fighter, nor should it be played like it is. The craziness of items and levels doing wacky things makes the game so much fun.

Yeah, it's not the way the game is MEANT to be played - but in a short tournament it creates too much of a random factor to truly discern the better player. You'd have to play 10 games to truly work out who won because they're the better player, since some random items can win a game for even a mediocre player.
In our Melee tournaments, we go so far as to rule out stages that have too many random elements as well. In fact, most really good Melee players are content with playing the utterly boring Final Destination stage for every level of the tournament.
It takes a lot away from the enjoyment of the game but it definitely puts a player's skills in the spotlight. Ultimately, this is what tournament play is all about.
LucidDefender
03-12-2008, 03:45 AM
I suppose everything you said makes sense for tournament play, Joe. I guess it would be like doing a high score in a roguelike tournament; s0meone would get an incredibly easy dungeon/item/monster scenario, and someone else would get completely screwed.
However, if any of my friends wanted to play with those rules at home, they'd get a look and a few words from me; especially since they like it just like I do fortunatly :)
I was curious if Joe would want to do a Medieval Mayhem tournament at the next NAVA meeting on the Atari 2600. Medieval Mayhem is a homebrew game that is more like the arcade version of warlords. The bug is fixed in this version that exists in the Atari version of warlords. Here is a link to a review of the game: Medieval Mayhem (http://www.ataritimes.com/article.php?showarticle=576)

Hey guys and gals,
Since I've been getting so many questions on specific game compatibility - this is an open call to any of you who own any of these titles.
I'll be bringing the RetroDuo down and setting it up so we can all give it a really really good "software stress test". We'll see if there is anyting that the thing won't run!
Here are a list of games that are confirmed incompatible with other NOAC systems.
NES
Bandit Kings of Ancient China
Challenge of the Dragon
Cheetahmen II
Crystal Mines
Gauntlet
Gemfire

The last place loser gets a trip to CGE and a chance to claim my title. ;)

Finally, I can wear my cod-piece to the store without anyone questioning me.

It is and it isn't. Just show up, introduce yourself to me (I'm much better with forum handles than real names) and I'll do my best to acquaint you with the regulars, other forum members, and the day's events!

I'm hoping I can get the time off to go to this NAVA... I missed meeting James at the previous one. I pickedd up a few games last month from collectorcardandgames(sp?) and he mentioned he used to go to them when they were in howell
If I get the time off I'll probably bring one of my Saturns + Bomberman + multitap + lots of controllers :pimp: I'm pretty sure I have atleast 10 in a drawer somewhere.

Just thought I would do my monthly advertising here - if anyone is passing through Northern Virginia and needs a place to rest or sleep and/or can give me a ride to NAVA I would be much obliged.

Cool, I remember during my lunch I stopped by the store I think I spoke to you. I asked about the Machine that fixes the scratches on the discs, and how its broken and you need to find a box big enough to ship it to Nevada.

I do remember the conversation, but I'm pretty bad at lining up faces with random conversations. I'm sure I'll remember you when we meet up again.

I live in the DP area, what exactly is NAVA?
For you newbies, NAVA stands for North Atlantic Videogame Afficiiados. It began around September 1995 by John Hardie, Keita Iita, and Mike Etler, who hosted the quarterly get-togethers at his legendary Howell, NJ store: Videogame Connections. Three years later, John and Keita, along with Sean Kelly, took NAVA to a higher level by bringing it to the World of Atari show in 1998. A year later that morphed into CGE.
Mike sold the store around 2003 and for a while the NAVA meetings were in limbo, until Joe Santulli reinstituted them in the basement of his home. After he bought the store in 2005, he appropriately began hosting the meetings there and in 2006 the NAVA meeting became a monthly event.
Today, I believe Keita is living in Japan. Mike lives in Toms River, NJ and occasionally stilll pops up for a meeting. John is the only remnant from the original NAVA.
Information about NAVA can still be found on the Videogame Connections website: http://www.videogameconnections.com/meeting/nava.html

I'm up for Warlords (medieval mayhem), and as usual I send out the challenge for BUMP 'N JUMP and a new challenge: Williams Pinball hall of Fame for the Wii. Let me know if people are up for this and I will bring my copy.

You spoke to me at the last NAVA. I'm always up for a good game of pinball. Bring it along, I want to try it and see if it's worth the money.
Hey Mike, we also spoke at the last NAVA meeting. My friends and I (Moonjump aka Nick and a few others) are still trying to figure out a good weekend to go to Castle Video for some Pinball. I am actually very interested in the Williams pinball for Wii cause as Moonjump said, I am curious if it is any good and worth picking up. I will also bring my copy of medieval mayhem.

I'll also bring a set of Paddles too.
I wanted to know if I should also bring my Wii to help out with the Smash Brothers tournament. I've got everything unlocked so everybody will have choice of characters. I'm not sure how many people will want to enter the tournament so I don't know if I should bring it or not.
I figured if we had two systems going, we can get the tournament done with faster so we can play some other games.

Good question, I don't mind it but I would wait for Joe to give his verdict.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I just did a Smash Bros (Melee) tournament with 32 players and it took 3 hours (!) so cutting this down to half would certainly help move the day along. Thanks!

You got it Joe. I'll bring it in and set it up. 2600 and I might show up early like we did the last time. I wanted to take a video tour of the store while it's quite just to show people what you got, then we'll set up the game and get a bite to eat for lunch.
