NOTE: Our member "Melf" created a very simple "how to" for burning your game CD's to music CD's. You can get that right here:

It figures that the Amazing Virtual Sea Monkeys would work. Maybe I'll get my $10 out of it yet (although the soundtrack isn't THAT great..)

Just a question, while we're on this topic.. Do PS2 games work as well? Or are they a completely different format?

The CD-ROM based ones shoujld work as well, but that's for another thread - Actually check out the link that PC Kwaj listed above, which includes some TurboDuo, Saturn and Sega CD titles as well!

I think it works like this,

There are 2 different ways to stream audio on the PS1. 1 format is .xa. The PS1 tool converts wav files into the .xa format and you can't play those in a cd player. The other way is normal wav files which is not compressed and they will play normally in a cd player. .xa files are interleaved, compressed wav files.

Oh yea, Tyco RC will play in a cd player if anyone cares. :)

N20! N20!!!

JR

P.S. We need a corresponding Sega Saturn thread. Midway had hidden some really bizarre music in their Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits titles. I'm not sure if those tracks were available on the Playstation versions of those games or not.

N20 Was the first game I put on the list!

And I invite you to start up a similar Saturn thread - should be one for Sega CD and TurboDuo too, really!

I'll have to dig the Saturn out of the closet first.
Someone needs to check the Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits discs on the Playstation to see if they've got the same music as the Saturn games. It was really funky stuff... like experimental techno music or something.

JR

P.S. I want to say that Street Fighter EX + Alpha had redbook audio, but I'm not sure. Guess I'll have to start messing around with my Saturn to find out. The beauty of the system is that it doubles as a CD player, and it does this better than any other game system out there. The interface is more attractive and has more features than the Playstation or 3DO, and it reads audio tracks better as well... it plays even scratched albums beautifully.

AFAIK, all the Sega CD games should have some redbook audio on them. At least all mine do.

Doom

There is a techno track. I think it is the last track or the last 2 tracks. It is the song from the secret techno club level.

N2O does not have the entire Crystal Method album Vegas built in. It has a few tracks from the album, and quite a few remixes that as far as I know are exclusive to this soundtrack. I can assure you that the entire album is not there though.

Twisted Metal 3 has a bunch of tracks too. Rob Zombie, Nashville Pussy. That's the only one I've actually popped into the CD player.

You are correct, sir! I just checked it out for myself.

SEVEN of the ten songs on the CD version of "Vegas" are in the game, but the game actually has 11 tracks - four of which are re-mixes. IMHO the three best tunes: Trip Like I Do, Busy Child, and Vapor Trail are all accounted for and/or have remixes on N20. You get a little more variety with the CD but you still gotta admit that the GAME is kick ass as a music CD!

I can't believe I forgot Street Sk8er 2. Every song in the game is on the CD (the only good thing about the game, actually. Shootyz Groove, Ministry...yum)

Off the top of my head, I know the Playstation Developers Demo CD that came with the (very) early Playstations had music on it that you could listen to in a CD player. I'll look for others tonight.

I have a quick question.. Since I only own two PS1 games, period, and both of them happen to be able to be played in my cd player, I can't check this out for myself, but does the fact that they both say "compact disc" on them, like a regular music cd does, mean anything? Or do all PS1 games say "compact disc", regardless of abilty to play on a cd player?

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo has one track, the instrumental version of "Sakura's Song," that can be heard on an ordinary CD player.

add these (from the top of my head):

tomb raider II (has music and all dialogue from cinemas)
tecmo's deception (has music and dialogue from japanese version!)
monster rancher (wild music not in the game)
dead or alive (cheesy, but ok)
excalbur 2555 a.d. (sorta cool!)
project overkill (nice dramatic stuff)
one (short, but funny.."i made a mistake")
machine hunter (nice, atmospheric stuff)
colin mcrae rally (title theme and some menu stuff)
alien resurrection (2 creepy tracks- listen w/ the lights out!)
treasures of the deep (end title/menu? music)
uprising x (wild metal/techno hybrid + dialogue tracks)
steel reign (sounds like it needs lyrics)
killing zone (30+ tracks! some nice, some oddball)
bloody roar (1 track)

also, a number of psx demo discs and imports have music tracks on them also- i'm too swamped to go through all my psx stuff now, though...

DP,

Of course it makes an awesome CD! I just wanted to make sure that anyone interested realized there was more of it out there. These guys make some amazing music, ad deserve every penny they can get IMO. Even if I didn't love the game, I'd have bought it just for the remixes.

Destruction Derby Raw - You can listen to all 10 in-game songs. Pretty good rock/techno.
Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense - I haven't played it, but I'm assuming all the in-game songs are on here. There are 16 on the CD.

Twisted Metal 4 works. I think that was the first time I ever heard Cirrus, and I became a big fan of theirs.
