This topic is obvious enough that I bet it's been done before, but I couldn't find a thread (probably because I didn't know what to search on).

Anyway, I pretty much always buy a system at first because there's a game on it that I'm dying to play. So what games did you buy your systems for? And, or clarity's sake, I'm going to put whether I bought it when it was new on the market, or after it was obsolete.

NES (new)--Nothing really; I just wanted the system. SMB/DH and Castlevania were my first buys.

SNES (new)--Nothing, again. Just wanted the system. Only had Super Mario World at first.

Genesis (new)--Nothing really, but Sonic and Toejam and Earl were my first buys.

Game Boy (new)--I bought this primarily for Tetris, despite the fact that it was a pack in.

Game Gear (new)--Ren & Stimpy: Quest for the Shaven Yak

Sega CD (obsolete)--Keio Flying Squadron

Saturn (obsolete)--Panzer Dragoon Saga, Dragon Force, NiGHTS (bought all at once from a local used store who got them all in from one trade in)

Nintendo 64 (new)--Nothing; just wanted the system. Super Mario 64 was my first buy.

Playstation (new)--Final Fantasy VII

Playstation 2 (new)--Nothing; I bought it when they were hard to find with the intention of reselling it, but never did. I didn't own any games on it for quite a while, though. The first game that I had on it that I really liked and played a lot was actually probably Katamari Damacy, despite that I bought the system at launch.

X-Box (new)--Toejam and Earl III

Game Boy Advance (new)--I bought all kinds of games at once when I first got my GBA. All four Castlevanias (NES classic, Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow), Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Excitebike (NES classic), Baseball Advance, Simpsons Road Rage, Mother 1+2 (import), Mario Kart and Mario Golf were bought pretty much all in one fell swoop, but it was probably the combination of Mother 1+2 and the sweet Classic Nes-style GBA system that sold it to me.

Nintendo DS (new)--Lost in Blue

PSP (new)--Me & My Katamari

Wii (new)--Nothing, really, but I got Wii Sports (of course) and Trauma Center: A Second Opinion on launch day.

X-Box 360 (new)--Culdcept Saga and Beautiful Katamari

Although I never actually owned a proper Game Boy Color or GameCube console, once I got my GBA and Wii, respectively, my first GBC buy was Survival Kids, and my first GC buy was Pikmin and Animal Crossing.

So, what games sold systems to you?

Hmm, let me think.

Game Gear - Gunstar Heroes
Turbo Grafx 16 - Neutopia
Dreamcast - KISS Psycho Circus - The Nightmare Child (in retrospect, the first game I gor for it [Capcom Vs. SNK] proved to be FAR superior)

I can't think of any systems I bought just to play one game. I didn't preorder a DC, but after seeing Soul Calibur & NFL 2k on my friend's, I ran out and got one. I didn't buy the system "just for" those games, though, rather I saw what an amazing console it was going to be.

I guess the closest would be the n64 - after playing a kiosk w/ Mario 64, I went out and preordered the console the next day. I knew there was more goodness coming, though, and I don't know I'd say I bought it *just* for Mario 64.

NES, SNES and N64 were all christmas presents that I desperately wanted for various games. I also got a Gameboy Colour one year which I specifically wanted for Pokemon :D.
However when I was old enough to buy my own systems (first with saved birthday money and such) I bought several primarily for one game, starting with the first system I ever bought!
Playstation - Final Fantasy 7
Saturn - Virtua Fighter
Genesis - Sonic
GC - Metroid Prime
GBA - Advance Wars
DS - Mario 64 DS & Lost in Blue
XBOX - Fable & Morrowind

Hmmm, I think everything else I own I got for several reasons. Of course these games are only why I initially bought systems, I quickly found much more to love them for.

The only systems I bought just to play a certain game are

PS2 - Wipeout Fusion. Even though the game itself is probably the worst wipeout, it was worth it because thte ps2 is great.

DS - Dragon Quest 9. Still waiting!

Xbox - Halo. I like the first one!

I'm gonna buy a 360 for tales of vespera

I've owned a bunch of consoles over the years but these are the only ones that I actually bought because I was drooling over a game.

Super NES: Final Fight
-Game Players magazine did a big spread on this game chock full of screenshots. This was shortly before the game came out. I couldn't believe how huge the onscreen characters were and how detailed the backgrounds were, compared to stuff like Double Dragon. Still an all time favorite of mine, to this day.

Sega Genesis: Phantasy Star II, General Chaos & Haunting Starring Polterguy
-Read about PSII in Game Players and the latter two in Game Informer, again before they were released. It wasn't until 1993 when I got the Genesis, so I was thinking about a couple of these games for a few months/years. I got the Genesis and to this day, I have never played any of those three titles I originally wanted the system for. Funny how these things work out.

Turbografx 16: Battle Royale, Vigilante & TV Sports Football
-Saw all three games in various magazines back when the system was still in stores (over 15 years ago). Wanted the system (and those games) bad. Never got a Turbo system until last month when I acquired it for the first time. In between the time I read about those games and actually got the system, I had plenty of time (17-18 years?) to learn that two of them aren't very good at all and the third is decent but generic.

Playstation: Resident Evil 1-3
-This is a no-brainer. I used to watch my old college roommate play through these games in our dorm room. Had to have the system and all three games. Of course I think #2 has aged better than the first and third installment, so I don't even own those other two anymore (but once did).

Gamecube: Luigi's Mansion
-Watched this running on kiosks in Walmart and thought it was sheer brilliance. Got the Cube a couple years ago and I still haven't acquired this game. Since watching it in demo mode, I've been exposed to a lot of reviews saying this is somewhere between lukewarm to slightly above average, at best. It doesn't matter. I'd still love to try it out someday. I've had plenty of chances to get it locally but never at a low enough price ($6-7 or less).

Just to clarify, I meant the game that sold the system to you, but not necessarily the only game you play on it. Every system I listed I went on to buy a ton of games for, and usually found games I liked a lot more than the game I bought the system "for." I'm just talking about the games that you wanted badly enough to make you take the jump into dropping (potentially a ton of) money on the system.

Dreamcast - NBA Showtime because of great memories of playing NBA Jam in the arcade.
PlayStation 2 - Timesplitters because I bought it for $20 before I owned the system.
Saturn - Konami Antiques: The MSX Collection because I bought it for $5 before I owned the system.
Xbox - NHL Hitz 20-02 because I bought it for cheap before I owned the system.
Xbox 360 - Burnout Revenge because I bought it for $20 before I owned the system.

Notice a pattern here?

Saturn - RPG's
SNES - RPG's
Turbo Express - Military Madness
Dreamcast - Expendable, bought it again after it was stolen
Gamecube - Mario Sunshine
Wii - Zelda, still haven't played it much though
N64 - Mario 64 was all I needed
NES - Mario and Tetris
PS3 - Resistance

These are the games I had in mind when I bought each system. I have not played them all though.

Actually, this is a great topic idea and I'm not sure it's been done before.

Of course, I'd never buy a system to just play ONE game, and I'm certain that's not the question you're asking. However, there's always a game that represents a "tipping point" of sorts where there may be plenty of games on a system which one would like to play, but there may be one game in particular that pushes you into commit mode.

Xbox 360 - Oblivion
Wii - Sports, no lie.
PS2 - Final Fantasy X
XBOX - Morrowind (My PC didn't play it well. Figured I'd spend less getting an Xbox.)
GameCube - Animal Crossing
PlayStation - Final Fantasy VIII (Had already played VII on PC)
Dreamcast - Shenmue
Nintendo 64 - Ocarina of Time (Though, I still need to get the game)
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon Saga
SegaCD - Snatcher
Sega32x - Night Trap 32x
TurboGrafx16+CD - Ys Books I & II
SNES - Chrono Trigger
Genesis - Phantasy Star series
NES - Super Mario Bros series
Sega Master System - Outrun 3D, though I don't have it yet. I blame Canada.
Atari 7800 - Cuttle Cart 2 (seriously!)
Colecovision - Gateway to Apshai
Vectrex - Rip-off (still need to get second controller, though)
Atari 5200 - Space Dungeon
Emerson Arcadia 2001 - no game on this system is worth getting this system
Bally Professional Arcade - Wizard of Wor
Intellivision - AD&D series
Odyssey^2 - Quest for the Rings
Atari VCS - Adventure (Adventure was why I reaquired the system many years later)
VCS Supercharger Add-on - Dragonstomper/Escape from MindMaster (tie)
RCA Studio II - Morbid Curiosity, oh the horror, the horror!
Fairchild Channel F - Video Whizball (to see the truly first easter egg)
Original Odyssey - Haunted House (Seriously, that's what got my attention about the system back in 2001. I just had to know how two squares could make a game called Haunted House.)

I'm pretty certain that I'll get the Playstation 3 to play Final Fantasy XIII but that's not going to happen until at least 2010 (assuming the game even comes out by then)

I usually only buy a system to play a particular game, aside from the systems I got when I was young (Atari 1200XL, NES, SNES).

N64 - Zelda OOT
PS2 - FFIX (and I needed a DVD player)
Gamecube - Animal Crossing
Xbox 360 - Beautiful Katamari

Guess which one I regret buying?

Intellivision- Astrosmash, Football, Baseball

Hmm, well, I bought a PS2 just to play OutRun 2006, and also because I needed a DVD player and thought in general has more exclusives/cheaper than an xbox.

Bought a DSlite after my original DS was stolen only when Ouendan 2 came out because I really wanted to play that.

Bought a GameBoy Micro to play the bitGenerations games on, even though I could play them on my DS.

Thats it for particular games.

I bought a super famicom for ff4 and chrono trigger jp
I bought a gba sp for ff4 ff6 and zelda 3

N64. I played a friends system and i absolutely hated the controllers. I eventually picked up one for next to nothing just so i could check out Mario 64, and Zelda Ocarina of Time. Now that I've played it a bit I've found out that this system actualy isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I do still hate the controllers though.

Dreamcast: All the 2K sports games everyone talked about and Shenmue. I've now since got even more Dreamcast games
SNES (pretty recently): Super Mario World, found it in the GC bargain bin :p and they had a SNES on the shelf. How can you NOT buy it?
Wii: For quite a few games, but I'm just waiting for Brawl now :p

That's pretty much it, I've bought game systems to play more thatn just 1 game honestly.

Here's my list; All bought new. I'm excluding the systems I bought either used or post life cycle. To clarify, these are the games I got the same day (technically) as the system.

2600 - My dad bought it solely for Pac-Man and Ms Pac-Man
Master System - Double Dragon and Hang On (Pack-in cart)
NES - SMB/DH, Castlevania and Contra
Genesis - Streets of Rage 2 - Actually purchased the SoR2 pack-in model 1
SNES - Zelda LttP, Mario World and All Stars - All Stars was a mail in freebie at the time.
Saturn - The three free pack-ins Daytona, Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter 2. Panzer Dragoon and Tomb Raider
PS1 - Ogre Battle and Resident Evil
Dreamcast - Soul Calibur
PS2 - Devil May Cry and MGS2
GC - Zelda CE bundle - At the time, it had all the Zelda games I never played (2, Ocarina and Majoras Mask). I skipped 2 on the NES and didn't get a N64 till a few years ago.
Wii - Twilight Princess, Smooth Moves and Wii Sports.

GBA - Namco Museum, Castlevania CotM and Gradius Galaxies
DS - Feel the Magic and Mario Kart DS

Forgot the Sega CD... but then, Sewer Shark and Dracula, while awesomely bad, were rather forgettable.

Let's see. Going down my list of owned consoles:

Atari 5200: The original I got for Christmas back in 81 or 82 is long gone. It was an unexpected gift. Though, had I known it existed (was hooked on the 2600!), I probably would've asked for it strictly on the Star Wars Arcade game.

Dreamcast: Easy. A friend was showing off his import copy of Marvel vs Capcom 2. I knew I had to have this system. First game I bought too.

Gameboy: Super Mario Land or Final Fantasy Legend. I can't quite remember.

Gameboy Advance: I liked what I saw in general, but pics and movies of Advance Wars had me hooked!

Game Gear: My system was a freebie; never really cared for it.

Genesis: Like Icarus Moonsight before me, I picked up the Streets of Rage 2/Genesis combo set. Wasn't it called the Fighting Pack?

NES: I didn't pick one up until the top loader came out. Probably for Metal Storm.

Nintendo 64: Super late adopter. Got one off Ebay (nice little bundle) just to play Mario Kart 64 again.

Nintendo DS: I picked one up (DS lite to be exact), but not for any game in particular. Would've gotten one for Etrian Odyssey or Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja (I own both).

Playstation: Hmm. Never really owned one until the PSone unit arrived (always played on a friend's or checked one out from my old job). I think I bought one to play Front Mission 3.

Playstation 2: Honestly? I don't remember. I think my first game was Tekken Tag Tournament.

Saturn: Easy. Guardian Heroes, thanks to a great write-up in an issue of Game Fan back in 96.

Sega CD: Never owned one until I got my JVC X'Eye. But I would say Snatcher, easily.

Super SNES: OH yeah. It was for Street Fighter II.

Virtual Boy: Got a minty one from a ex co-worker with a stack of 6 or 7 games (all complete too). Never had much interest in the VB prior to this.

Xbox: Bought a modded one full of emulators and roms from a buddy. I really wanted it to play Fable and Gungriffon: Allied Strike (I'm a big GG fan!), however.

Xbox 360: I believe it was early pics of Fable 2 that made the system a must have for me. Didn't get one until late last year.

@ Damaramu: I believe it was either the Fighters or Brawlers system. I don't honestly remember. :p

My biggest regret was not picking up the Turbo Expess and Turbo Duo when TRU had them on clearance. $50 and $75 respectively. I didn't miss it then, but I am sure sore about passing it up now. Hindsight 20/20 and all. LOL

Here's an interesting one that I forgot to mention.

I bought two GBA SPs (and later a third) to play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. And then I had to pay prostitutes to play it with me, but that's another story.

Interesting question! Here goes:

SEARS TELEGAMES - Little did I know this was the Sears version of Atari 2600. I was in 3rd grade! My parents got it for me so I could play TARGET FUN.

NES - My brother actually wanted the system but I ended up supporting it. Still works to this day! We got it for the R.O.B. and GYROMITE.

GENESIS - I desperately needed to play ALTERED BEAST! Thank God it was the pack-in.

GAMEBOY - TETRIS

TURBOGRAFX-16 - I had just gotten the Genesis with my Altered Beast game. I was loving it! But then I went to a friend's house and he showed me KEITH COURAGE IN ALPHA ZONES! I bought a TG-16 because of that game!

TG-CD - FIGHTING STREET

SNES - I bought this system so I could play ULTRAMAN!

GAMEBOY COLOR - No reason. Just wanted it as an upgrade to my old Gameboy.

SATURN - I guess I bought this system so I could be one of the first to have one. Big mistake as it cost me like 400 bucks at the time!

GBA - Nothing in particular. I just wanted to upgrade from my Gameboy Color.

PS1 - BATTLE ARENA TOSHINDEN

N64 - SUPER MARIO 64

DREAMCAST - SOUL CALIBUR

GAMECUBE - SUPER MONKEY BALL

PS2 - STREET FIGHTER EX 3

PSP - DARKSTALKERS CHRONICLE

NINTENDO DS - PING PALS (I know, I'm crazy!)

XBOX - DEAD OR ALIVE 3. I'm no Halo fan either. I don't own a copy of any of the Halos. Some of the later SNK games that came out: KING OF THE FIGHTERS NEOWAVE, SAMUARI SHOWDOWN V, SVC CHAOS make me glad I own an Xbox. Oh, and DUNGEONS & DRAGONS was great!

WII - The motion sensing was a BIG draw for me. Not a particular game. But WII SPORTS was cool. VIRTUAL CONSOLE is awesome too!

XBOX 360 - DEAD OR ALIVE 4

Just what I can remember:

SNES: Super Mario World and Kart
Playstation: Metal Gear Solid
N64: Ocarina of Time
Dreamcast: Shenmue
Gamecube: Really just wanted it - bought super monkey ball and rogue squadron at launch
DS: Wanted it - bought Mario 64 DS something else but I forget
PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2
Wii: Zelda Twilight Princess
Xbox: Halo

Those are the only systems I bought when they were actually on sale in stores. The rest of my systems I purchased well after their shelf life. And yes, I am a Nintendo and Metal Gear Solid Fanboy.

Guess which one I regret buying?

I don't know...the Xbox 360? Did it break?

Yup, there's pretty much always been one game that's convinced me to buy a system. Let me think back....

Genesis: Streets of Rage. I was heavily into side scrolling beat-em-ups, because of Final Fight and Double Dragon. I nearly shit myself when I saw how awesome this game looked.

SNES: Street Fighter 2. I'm pretty sure that I wasn't the only one who was lured into buying the system 'cause of this game.

SCD: Final Fight. I didn't buy the system until 2003. I was at a used game store and saw Final Fight and Earthworm Jim, at which point I decided to pay the $12 bucks and buy the damn thing!

PS1: Mortal Kombat 3. Buying any system just to play MK is a terrible choice... good thing that the PS1 turned out to be awesome. I was riding high on the MK3 phase throughout high school and wanted a close to arcade perfect port as I could afford.

DC: Soul Calibur. I couldn't even believe that this game was real.... it just looked too damn good.

PS2: Tekken Tag. I played this in the arcade non-stop and this was the only way to get it at home.

GBA: Castlevania Circle of the Moon. Where Castlevania goes, I follow...

Xbox: Dead or Alive 3. I buy almost every new system because of fighting games, it would seem!

DS: Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow. See 'GBA reasonings'.

PSP: Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles. See above!

I bought my systems so I could play my sealed games on them.

Take my Sharp Twin FC, it's never been used and the disk games I have for it have never been opened.

Thank God for emulation!

A game system I bought to play a specific game on?

PS1: The first game console I bought myself. I don't think I had any particular game in mind when I bought it.
Game Boy Color: Perfect Dark is a horrible, shitty game. I only got my GBC a few weeks ago.
N64: Goldeneye, naturally.
GameCube: It's been a while but I'm sure it was for Metroid Prime, a game I never finished. I might yet, though. RE4 is a better game though.
DS: Contra 4 (I've been saying this a lot lately).
PC: Until lately, I was buying new PC components for new PC games. I might update again this year, and then again I might wait for the next generation of components...things have been slow in the PC component world as of late.

Its called the "Sega Genesis Fighting System." I saw he picture of a dirty-looking Axle doing a crane stance on the front and couldn't resist.

Lets see...

PS2- Tekken Tag Tournament and the Bouncer.

PS1- Mega Man X4, Castlevania SOTN

Saturn- Dark Savior, Radiant Silvergun, Hyper Duel, Die Hard Arcade, Guardian Heroes

X360- Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Senko no Ronde

PS3- Bought it b/c it is import friendly

Dreamcast- Strangely enough, I never asked for one of these. My mom got me one for Christmas, and she got Marvel vs. Capcom and Power Stone to go with it. I'm surprised at her, she usually gets garbage games for me.

GBA- Castlevania Circle of the Moon, did not disappoint.

DS- Castlevania Aria of Sorrow

PSP- Castlevania: Dracula X chronicles

Anyone seeing a pattern here?

A handful of noteworthy game-related console purchase motivators:

Game Boy - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
SNES - Super Mario World, TMNT IV: Turtles In Time
Jaguar - Alien vs. Predator, Iron Soldier, Wolfenstein 3D
PSX - Battle Arena Toshinden, Jumping Flash!

Battle Arena Toshinden has definitely aged the worst of any of these.

Gah, I forgot:

Nes: I actually didn't get this on my own at first, since I was a kid. But you know, the usual rap sheet: Zelda, Contra, Zelda II, Milon's Secret Castle, Double Dragon III, Ninja Gaiden.

Turbo Grafx 16: My dad got me a PC-Engine when we were traveling, and it wouldn't play US games, so he got me a Turbo Grafx. Strange, when I got my PC-engine, he got me Wataru, Gunhed, and Splatterhouse. When I got the Turbo, I got Keith Courage, Blazing Lazers, Splatterhouse, and Legendary Axe. So really, I only got one new game.

Atari 5200: Berzerk. I saw Mattdog playing one, and I was impressed by the color, the sound, and the voices in the game.

Maybe I'm weird but I really can't think of any system that I bought for a particular game. I just tend to buy systems and then see what games I can find for them that I'll enjoy.
