It's amazing what comes out of the woodwork when you go asking for stuff. I now have the first press kit from Halo 1. The shots below are from 3-14-2001 with an alpha build of Halo running on an Alpha II xbox prototype.

You can see some of the locations in the shots didn't make it into the game, the skyboxes were toned down, the chief's armor is drastically different.

The most interesting thing from a technical side is that it looks like they're using a different rendering engine. Halo 1 has a washed out, almost cartoony look to it. This is much more detailed with crisp colors and vibrant skyboxes. I'm curious why the transition.

For an even earlier look at Halo, check out the 1999 Macworld keynote (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2RVje3MyhQ) where they first debuted it. And remember,

"Everything you're about to see is being rendered in real-time, on a Macintosh, using OpenGL."

Oh yeah, well here's some video from the January 2000 issue of Incite PC Gamer.

It doesn't say what platform the game is running in, but I DO remember them mentioning macs in the magazine.

It looks like Halo with primitive lighting and no hardware shaders.
