Favorite version of DOS for old PC games

I was wondering if anyone played any of the older PC games like Kings Quest, Space Quest, and etc. If so what was your favorite DOS version and manufacturer. My first version of DOS that I used was MS DOS 2.1 on a Tandy 1000hx. My Favorite MS DOS version would be either 5.0 or 6.22. My favorite manufacturer was DR DOS. Most people called it Doctor DOS, but the DR really stood for Digital Research. Oh well sorry for reminiscing!

I was never picky about what version of DOS I was using at any given time. It always seemed to do what I expected of it, which was to run my games, run my batch files, and generally just stay out of the way.

Agreed. Some folks had a great fondness for 4DOS, but since that was shareware, I never bothered with it. It doesn't really get much better than DOSBox.

I also find that some people's insistence that they must run everything under genuine MS-DOS 6.22 to be rather groundless - DOS "7.x" or FreeDOS will do just as well.

I just use the DOS that comes with Windows 98. Never failed me yet.

I loved when new versions of MS DOS would roll out and always loved each new version more than the previous. It never really got any better than MS DOS 6.22 for me, that's for sure.

But anymore, I'll take DOSbox over any real DOS machine any day of the week. Something about being super easy to configure in a multitude of ways that would be either impossible, time consuming, or expensive on a normal machine just appeal more to me.

My first x86 PC came with MSDOS 5.0, and that's all I ever needed. I never had any games that didn't roll with that.

On those occasions when I feel like setting up a DOS game machine nowadays, I still use my DOS 5 floppies (now backed up for posterity). I have a copy of 6.22 but there's really no point in it, and 5.0 has DOS Shell which I like.

I never cared much for DOS, might be because I don't care much for command line stuff.

I didn't mind the little I used it when it came to Win95/98...took away the need to fiddle with that idiotic "higher memory" just to get anything to run.

DOS 6.22 usually did the trick, but DOS 5.0 was fine back in the day. For older AT/XT stuff, I use a version of 3, but I don't remember which one.

I never really knew or cared what DOS I was using. I still have a ton of boot disks for some of my old games...man that was a pain trying to get games to run right for the first time.

I liked DOS for it's simplicity of use. Granted, it took a person a while to learn how to use it, but after that it was great! Windows is nice, but at times I wish DOS were back. I guess DosBox will have to do.

Fine, I'll bite. It is from Duke Nukem the First, as spoken by Dr. Proton. (I had to look that up; I was thinking Captain Proton or Commander Proton...) That's the level where you get the Grappling Hooks!

6.22, for one reason:

That took a lot of the grunt work out of the stupid memory juggling required to run some of the classics.

MS-DOS 7.1 (Windows 95 OSR2 \ Windows 98), though I've also used 6.22 and 5.0

Heh. I've actually got my Windows 98 PC set so that it brings up a boot menu asking me if I want to go into DOS or Windows, and with multiple configurations for either (so I can boot into DOS either with or without EMS memory or with EMM386 completely missing--the latter is useful for Ultima VII and VIII).
