View Full Version : Is it possible to find rare games at Gamestop?

I have been a regular buyer from Gamestop for many years, back when they still had NES and PS1 games, I was able to find some real gems of games. But unfortunately now it seems like all they have is common games. I guess my question is, has anyone been able to find any rare PS2 games, Dreamcast, GBA, or Xbox games?

You missed out the Gamecube. And yes I've picked up the Cube version of NCAA Basketball 2K3 at a Gamestop. I've also seen a copy of Bust-a-Move 3000 as well in my travels.

BAM 3000 is quite difficult to come by. Pretty much forgot about it but I saw it a few times way back around it's release.
As for the topic on hand, can't say I'm too much ontop of the whole modern gaming prints, but when they were still selling classics it was quite uncommon to find rares for me. They're just a big outlet for gamers and don't doubt the employees could get the goods before my next visit. I remember someone posting a scan of a FuncoLand ad with Stadium Events listed as $0.49 or something.

Um...it might not be all that rare as I also found the GCN NCAA College Basketball 2k3 at a Gamestop a week ago.^^;
Gamestops are a double edged sword. On one hand, if you do manage to find a gem it might be priced reasonably provided it's not a "big name" rarity. NCAA cost me 10 bucks. Other times they gouge like crazy, presumably based on Ebay prices. Jurassic Park for the PS2 and Xbox go for $50 there and I'm not even certain they're all that hard to find.
The thing is, it's really not a problem with Gamestop that keeps people from finding rare games. It's the fact that they're rare that keeps people from finding them. The real trouble with Gamestops is that you won't find any rare PS1/Saturn/N64/Dreamcast games there because you can't find ANY games for those consoles there. But, truthfully, if you're looking for PS2/Xbox/GCN stuff, there are no better places to scour than the used bins at those stores. They still have, in general, the largest selection of used last gen games so you're probably better off with Gamestops than anywhere else.

With a print run of about 5,600 copies(I believe) its not that easy to come by. Most people just pass it up as another sports game and think nothing of it.
And back on topic, not at GameStop, but I didn't find a loose Aerofighters at a rhino games shortly before GS bought them out.

Um... folks... Rare games are rare. Hence why they're not easy to find...
If you're looking for rare titles, then gamestop is a good place to go. If you're looking for expensive titles, then no... because they're expensive.

Back before they stopped taking in PS1 games there was one Gamestop that had Suikoden I and II plus a bunch of other hard to find RPGS, all at decent prices (Suikoden II was $34.99). They must have had a foolish person trade them all in and none of them were "in the know" enough to snatch the stuff up.
It's all hit or miss, but now it's going to be hit and pay big time or miss.

If by "rare" you mean stuff like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and SMT Nocturne, then yeah, they're pretty easy to find at Gamestop. Mainly because nobody wants to pay crazy Ebay prices for used games at retail stores.
I rarely go into Gamestop anymore but the last few times I did, I saw several used $60+ games, collecting dust on the shelves.

The only problem I've had with Gamestop is that some of the Used games they hold are in horrible conditions. I know, it's probably a pain in the ass to check all those games, but come on.
The used Simpsons: Hit and Run I got didn't load at all. The KOF: Maximum Impact wouldn't go past the character select screen. I almost bought a copy of CvSNK2 on the Gamecube until I asked to look at the disc and it was scraped and torn in every single way.
I've come across quite a few uncommon games there but now I'm too much of a wuss to check the Used/Gamecube sections anymore.

I rarely find anything rare, and by rare we are only talking relatively.
Etrian Odyssey for the DS seems rare...found it a month ago.
Firefighter FD18 for the PS2....found it about a year ago.
Electroplankton for the DS....found it about 6 months ago.
Every six months then...
I haven't really identified all the rarities yet so I've probably missed a couple.
Also, take a look behind the counter on the shelves. Sometimes they hold the good stuff there. Though it's often being held for an emplyee; not all employees respect the 'holding area'.
I too had great luck there with PS1 RPG's back in the day. I think there was a day when someone traded many in and I walked in a few hours later and dropped $200 on the ones I did not have at the time...

early last year I found Valkyrie Profile for PS1 (Complete and mint!) at a Gamestop for $60. I went home to see if that was a good price and when I went back to buy it it was gone!
I found a complete Lunar Eternal Blue for PS1 also and bought it. It even had the little stand up things.
Other "rare" games I found at this particular gamestop:
Intelligent Qube
The Red Star
Persona
Marvel vs Capcom 2. At least they think it is with the $80 price. They have 3 copies for PS2 and 1 copy for the Xbox, it's not rare!

I remember when Gamestop prices used to be based on their OWN data. If games sold well, they would price them relatively higher. Many unknown or harder to find games would be priced cheaply because there was not enough copies of them to gather significant data. Now Gamestop monitors the eBay scene and reflect their prices based on the data gathered there. They still use their own sales data to price games, but the only games that are really affected by this data are the 17.99 and under games.

a few months ago I actually found quite a few PSX rpgs at a Gamestop at 85% off with my discount card.
I got 4 copies of Persona 2 all complete and mint, 2 Copies of BOF IV one missing manual both mint, BOF III complete, Suikoden disc only, 2 copies of Rhapsody both complete and mint, and a couple other cheaper rpgs I can't remember.

That's why NCAA Basketball 2k3 is such a strange situation. By most accounts, this is the rarest commercially released game of all last gen. You'd think that would garner some fanfare and if it were some Atlus RPG it certainly would have and Gamestop would be charging $90 for it. But their price? $9.99. That's noticeably less than the game goes for on Ebay. I've seen it go for at minimum twice that and even now there's some lunatic who thinks he's going to get over $70 for a disc only copy.
But I guess Gamestop sees it like most other people do. It's just a basketball game. A basketball game that's also on the PS2 and Xbox. Though, at the same time, those versions are priced at $3.99. So Gamestop definitely knows to apply some additional value to the GCN version but why not Ebay prices? The only thing I can think of is that they don't think it's worth it because it's not a "fanfare" title like MvC2 or Nocturne is. I'd bet it's because a copy of NCAA could potentially sit on the shelf for over a year without being touched. Who's looking to buy it other than the people who know there are fewer than 6,000 copies?

Aha, therein lies the flaw of your arguement. You assume GS cares about people who collect games at all! They put stickers on case arts, they sell disc only games for the same price as complete ones, yet they'll jack up prices to Ebay prices and expect ANYONE to pay for it.
Actually, read what I wrote again. That's exactly my point. The reason it's so cheap is that nobody cares about the game except the people who know there were only 6,000. A copy could sit in the store for years without anyone touching it because to 90% of the customers, it's just another sports game.

Here's a few uncommon titles to keep an eye out for:
Ninja Five-O (GBA, I believe it's around $5 now)
Car Battler Joe (GBA, $4.99 the last time I saw a copy)
Strike Force Hydra (GBA, should be under $5)
Rally Championship (Gamecube, $4.99)
The GBA games are among the best on the system, and Rally Championship is pretty decent.
Also, since GameStop still carries GB and GBC games (for now, I have a feeling this will be the year they get rid of them), you might be able to get a few of the uncommon games at your local stores. Also, some of the highly sought after games (such as Donkey Kong '94 and Final Fantasy Legend) are pretty cheap too.
Yes, I got Ikaruga for $40...so overpaid for it but now I can say "I've played Ikaruga"
I'm glad to say I got my copy at a GS in early 2005... when it was still $19.99 used.

Definitely, the Gamestop I was at a couple weeks back had tons of GB/C/A games for sale. All of them were less than $5 each too, aside from a couple GBA ones which were a bit pricier. Bought Drill Dozer for three bucks.

Not very. I'm pretty sure there are just about the same amount of copies as Mad Maestro (the other game released under Eidos' Fresh Games label with R-Type Final), only no one wants to keep Mad Maestro. Mr. Mosquito is a fun game, but a lot more people kept it for the "weird" factor.

Interesting. The copy I picked up (as mentioned earlier) is actually a dupe, and I paid $20 for it (plus tax, minus used game discount). May have to consider selling it shortly. Given I've now finished the US Cube collection, I guess I can think about selling all the spares I have.

Or that there's more then 6,000 copies...
That 6,000 number comes from the sales figures from the year the game was released. Just because they sold 6000 copies of a crappy sports game in one year doesn't mean that's all they made.

Agreed. I heard the print run was actually 10K. How many of those they ended up destroying and how many may have been sold and not counted is another issue.

Best time to find good deals a GS/EB on "Rare Titles" is when they are closing out a specific system. I would imagine the next to go is Xbox and GB/GBC games. Not much rare on these, but you should be able to get some good titles.

Ive found some rare stuff worth noting:
Suikoden $9.99
Suikoden 2 $19.99
NCAA Basketball 2K3 (GCN)- I think i paid $19.99 for mine...could be wrong though
RE 2 (GCN) - Sealed for $9.99
RE 3 (GCN) - Sealed for $9.99. This was before they caught fire and gained value.
Karaoke Revolution: Country - $19.99. I swear this game is really rare. There are none in the twin cities area and only one in the Seattle area when I found it.
The good stuff is becoming much harder to find. Just keep looking and use their online search engine for good deals. Just make sure you call ahead to confirm they actually have the game before driving 60 miles to grab a good deal.

Well I can't remember how long ago it was now but I passed up a complete copy of Intelligent Qube for less than $10. Actually think it was about $5. Had no idea at the time it was worth anything. Looked like some piece of crap budget title to me. So I am sure plenty of people pass over NCAA College Basketball 2K3 on Gamecube all the time. Funny thing is I am probably the one person here who'd love to get ahold of NCAA Basketball 2K3 on the Cube just to get a Dynasty mode rollin', without giving a damn how much it goes for online.

I remember I took a trade in for Final Bout once. This was before even Budokai came out and this was when DBZ was probably at it's hottest in the states. I think was game $35 in credit for it and it sold for $199.99 in our store. I was trying to tell the lady to sell it one ebay because she sould get probably $300 for it but she didn't speak good english and didn't kow what the hell I was talking about. Not only that but this was like in '02 and ebay wasn't what it was back then what it is now, but was getting there. I seriously didn't want anything to do with that trade because I felt like I was going to rip EVERYONE off besides Gamestop. The lady was out potentially $250+ and whoever bought the game from us paid more than 200% what we game for it.

Now, that is insane! Was it even complete?
Yeah, back in the day when EB was still it's own entity, I managed to secure some very nice titles...
Valkyrie Profile-- $29.99
Intelligent Qube-- $29.99
Street Fighter Collection 1 and 2-- $29.99 each
Super Puzzle Fighter-- $19.99
Tales of Destiny 2 (I don't remember the price)
Castlevania Chronicles-- $24.99 (I should've bought it when it first came out at only $14.99!)
Fox Hunt-- $6.99(!)
Dragon Warrior 7-- $14.99
Each game was in practically mint condition. But, like an idiot, I passed up on the PS1 Klonoa, which was only $19.99! A buddy of mine picked up the first Suikoden in '05 for $12.99. Also, I remember trading in Cubivore for the Gamecube a few years back. EB gave me around $3 before turning around and selling it for $39.99! I was just a little bit salty about that...

Don't know if this was mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but a year or so back GameStop must have found a WAREHOUSE full of new copies of REZ for PS2 and opened and distributed them to all of their stores nationwide (and priced them at like $50 used).
Or perhaps those were GQD style reprints that they commissioned?
Either way REZ was at one point a pretty rare PS2 game ... now I always see 2-3 copies looking all simultaneously new and used sitting in every single GameStop in northern NJ.

I'd say it's YMMV. It depends on who's working there and if they care to hold rare games. Around me, I haven't had any problems buying rare games when they showed up in the website's inventory system in the past few years. It seems like since they stopped carrying pre-PS2 games, they stopped caring about hiding rare games.

There have been a few instances where the employees at Gamestops have gone under the table with trade-ins. A friend of mine went in with a bunch of DS stuff and the guy doing the trade-ins cut him a deal. He bought it off of my friend for more than the trade-in value would be but it cost him less than shelf price at the store. So everybody won. Except for Gamestop, of course. I can't imagine that kind of thing is rare. Could explain why the good stuff has trouble ending up on the shelves.
On a side note, I would probably own a few more "rare" (quotes for the lack of certainty on the matter) games from Gamestop if the prices were more affordable. For example, Jurassic Park on both the PS2 and Xbox (I've seen both multiple times) is a whopping $49.99 used. I've seen Rollercoaster Tycoon for the Xbox and that too was priced higher than I was willing to go. But I got NCAA Basketball 2k3 for $10. Go figure.

A friend of mine who used to work at Gamestop once took a trade-in of Guilty Gear PS1 and placed it on a shelf behind the register so that he could buy it at the end of his shift. I would've cried foul, since I definitely would have bought it, but it was just the disc only.
Another time, I stopped at a Mega Media Exchange and behind the counter, there was a complete copy of Earthbound --with the large box-- for only $20! But, it already had some random employee's name on it. I suppose that it's one of the perks of working at a place that deals with games, but it makes it just a little unfair for the rest of us who don't have an 'inside connection'.
Hmm... I've found different region games (that's a given), I found Ikaruga once for about $11.99, where there were 5 other copies for about $50. Oh, and a large section on Genesis, N64 and PlayStation games.

In the past, I was able to pick up the following:
Complete Boxed Final Fantasy III - just before they stopped carrying SNES
Complete Boxed Lufia II - same as above
Suikoden II - just before they stopped carrying PSX
Rez
Gitaroo Man
Complete Boxed Digital Devil Saga 1
Disgaea (when it was HTF)
Cubivore (when it was HTF)
Electroplankton
Monopoly/Boggle/Yahtzee/Battleship (DS)
I recall someone here at DP (I believe from Arizona?) finding a Stadium Events at a EB back when they carried NES games about 1-2 years ago. EB used to put their carts in those silly plastic bags with a cardboard hanger.

Is Suikoden rare? I was in a GameStop two years ago and a guy was trying to trade in a PS1 game, but they no longer accepted them, so he gave it (Suikoden) to me.
Suikoden I is an R3 (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=27338) and Suikoden II is an R4 (http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/game.cmf?gameid=27351). However, both (especially II) are in high demand so you don't see them very often. I don't remember the last time I saw II in the wild, but I bought a boxed copy of the first one for $4.99 at a Goodwill in January.

IMo GameStop has never really impressed me. At GameCrazy I have found a lot of rare titles or things most people do not want. Lot's more after I became good friends with the asst. manager of my local GameCrazy and he's a gaming nut like I am.

After the above review for Game Crazy I may have to check it out. When I went last time they had PS1 discs that were all scratched so I decided to go elsewhere. I might give them some business again.

I just stumbled on a Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence Limited Edition at Gamestop for a whopping $25. Very unexpected surprise. It didn't come with that fourth disc, but the MGS3 Theater Disc was what I really wanted anyway :)

Not much anymore. A few years ago Gamestop started tracking ebay sales for games and it's been all down hill from there. Why else did they magically start selling Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 for the PS2 used with no manual for $79? They know the value of most rare last gen games, but every now and then you can stumble across something they are completely oblivious to...like the copy of the Metroid Prime/Legend of Zelda: WW hybrid I found for under $20. It's a good thing they don't know that those can sell on ebay for $40 an up:)

To be fair, that hybrid Wind Waker/Metroid Prime is strange as hell since there's nothing rare about it outside of the cut and paste insert. Everything else is standard right down to the two manuals so it would be hard for Gamestop to price it any differently than they do. I have no idea why people are basically paying $20 for a paper insert I could make in Photoshop myself.
Honestly, I don't have a problem with Gamestop's pricing in general. You might not find many deals but few things are outright overpriced there. The problem I have is that a disc only copy of a game in one of those makeshift Gamestop boxes costs exactly the same as a pristine complete copy sitting right next to it. You would think they'd have trouble moving the disc only copies at those prices.

Nah, most people don't care about having the case or instructions. I'd think that even if people aren't collectors they'd want to treat games they paid for with a little care just to make sure they keep working, but a lot of used games I see look like they were used as a drink coaster.

I don't know. From my own experience spending time counting (yeah, I'm that boring) I've noticed that if all the local Gamestops and kin (there are plenty) have 10 copies of a game where 5 of them are disc only, those disc only copies never move while the complete copies fluctuate. Maybe a lot of people don't mind a disc only copy of a game if they have no other choice but in the case of Metroid Prime only an idiot would grab the $8 disc only copy when 4 or 5 complete copies are next to it for $8 as well. You don't have to be a "collector" to want more bang for your buck.

could just be regional, but I've found a bunch of rare games at gamecrazy over the years, and nothing at all at gamestop.

You're more likely to find good deals at Gamecrazy than Gamestop for the simple fact that Gamecrazy doesn't base their prices on outside markets like ebay. They look at a game thats used and has been out for a few years and prices it accordingly. The same cannot be said for Gamestop obviously:shameful:
