Is anyone else playing this?

I'm a pretty big God of War fan, so I've been enjoying it immensely. It has everything that makes the PS2 games so much fun... Only portable.

The controls are pretty amazing; I think this is the first PSP action game I've played where the ergonomics of the buttons and analog nubbin feel right. Kratos does what you want him to every time, at a rock solid frame rate. Special attention goes to the 'evade' move: instead of being mapped to the right analog stick, you hold both the L and R buttons and push in the desired direction on the analog nubbin. It takes a few battles to get used to, but it works as well as it's console brethren.

I honestly don't have many complaints: it's a bit on the short side (six hours for me), and some of the background textures are less than inspiring. Other than that, this might be the most entertaining action game I've played on the PSP(that wasn't a ripped PS1 ISO).

That's great to hear. I am actually thinking of getting a PSP for that. I also heard they are porting it to the PS2.

Wow, huge thumbs up from everyone! This is a title that has gotten me looking at buying a PSP as well. That, and seeing strange things like PaTaPon.

I got this and I am having a blast with it, now can anyone tell me where this falls into the story of the series. I ask because I have played and beat the first but didn't play the second yet, so I was curious where this one falls in the time line and does it tie into the first or second at all?

I'll also throw my hat in and praise it's awesomeness (played the demo like 20 times, and I really enjoyed Read At Dawn Studio's "DAXTER" ... so I knew great things were in store for God of War Chains of Olympus.)

But to answer your question, this game is a prequel to God of War 1 the story falls in sometime before the events of the 1st game, possibly leading right up to them (though I haven't finished it, so I can't confirm that).

Is that true? Any info on the PS2 release? As I am also a big fan of the series and it would be awesome to get a prequel on the PS2...

There will be a PS2 port. Guaranteed. It's funny that the developer actually thinks they have some say in the decision. Sony will decree it and it will happen. Simple as that. There's too much money to be made with a PS2 port.

True enough.

Though, I'd estimate a good year and-a-half (maybe slightly less, or maybe slightly longer) based on the standard set by all the other ports (with the exception of Silent Hill Origins).

Guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens.

It's a prequel to the first God of War, dealing with the time frame in which Kratos was in servitude to the Gods. I think it's suppose to take you nearly right up to the moment where the original game began.

Edited to add:

Oops--Frankie already answered you. Sorry for the redundancy.

Ready At Dawn's engine doesn't port so well to the PS2. If the agreement wasn't already made, then sony may not be able to get the rights to port the engine over, which would mean a complete rewrite of the code.

The PS2 doesn't have enough life in it to completely rebuild an AAA title.

Besides, why would sony undercut it's best shot at selling PSPs?

No PS2 port for now, and expect denials until they squeeze every bit of life out of this version at retail. By the time that happens PS2 may be irrelevant.

I picked it up this weekend based on the strong impression the demo and the first GOW made on me. It's the first new game that's held my attention for more than 20 minutes, that and Rock Band.

I would wager that there's a NDA that keeps Ready at Dawn from talking about a PS2 port now. They've gotta sell PSP copies while the fire is hot, then when demand cools off I think they're going to announce a port.

I'd argue that Sony's best shot at 'selling PSP's' is actually that Final Fantasy VII game coming out at the end of the month, God help us all.

I disagree with your assessment of the PS2; It hasn't even hit the magical $99 price point yet. There are nearly 150 million of them in the hands of end users right now. Why wouldn't Sony take advantage of that?

Sony has sold a pretty substantial number of PSP's: Nearly fifteen million world wide, while sales have actually increased month to month over the last year, and no end in sight. Sony doesn't really need to move PSP's themselves. The software, on the other hand doesn't move at all. Has a PSP game that wasn't a GTA ever even cracked the top twenty on NPD's? Ever?

If I had to guess, I'd say that by the first quarter of 2009, GoW PSP will hit PS2. By then anyone who would actually buy the game for the PSP will have already picked it up and they can start milking the PS2 install base. They can probably even get most of the PSP owners to buy it again by adding a few new features and releasing it at a thirty or forty dollar price point.

Well I stopped into Gamespot tonight and was talking to the manager about it, his opinion is that they will def. port it out to the PS2 within this year. He also said that they weren't even told about Silent Hill Origins being ported to the PS2 until a month before it arrived...

So, fingers crossed.

Not yet... you must be thinking of that special promotion a while back. Best Buy, Circuit City, and TRU are still selling the base PS2 for $130 as of March 13th.

Ok let me be honest here. YES, this game is great for the PSP sales. (Well with Homebrew in the mix maybe not the full potential of sales) YES, this is God of War, a brand name in the Playstation market like Halo in the XBOX world.

But lets be real folks. This game is the SAME as all the others. Same weapons, same movements, same style puzzles, same enemies, and so forth. I mean really how many times do we have to fight the freaking cyclops? And how many times do we have to revisit a giant enemy at the beginning of the game pillaging through a town. Same chests, same way to open doors, same combo sequences, same everything! I mean yeah it is fun to play cause it is such a fast paced game, but for Christs sake change something other then the story. I guess this game puts meaning to the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I felt the same way with Devil May Cry 4, but they went above and beyond for the Next-Gen so I was impressed.

I am just not feeling this game. I am even playing it on the Slim via Component to my LCD and it looks great!

I just wish something was..different.

Someone traded it in today I scooped it up for 34.99 I was also going to get Patapon but they had a missed marked pursuit force extreme force for 19.99. It was traded in under the first one. so they sold me that one at that price. Cant wait to play,

Hmm...my local Target is $99. And a local Shoprite marked them down to $99 for a "sale" a few weeks ago, and since then left them at that price. They must have about 50 units :)

As for GOW, I picked this up today and have been playing it all day. What an awesome game. The controls are just perfect, and this is by far the nicest looking title on the PSP to date. This may quite possibly sell some PSP's. And if not, the June release of the GOW red slim bundle will :)

Actually I was very impressed that they didn't try to alter any of the storyline with the Second GOW, When you stop and think about it they could make tons of God of War titles and never run out of Greek Mythology to base the game on...

That's what makes it great IMHO.

Just finished the game ... and while I thought the overall expereince was fantastic, right up there with GOW 1 and 2 on PS2, I've got to say that I find the narrative a bit strange ... spoiler alert time, the following text is in black, hilight it to see:

... Okay ... in the beginning of the game, the naration and narrative has Kratos going after Morpheus for plunging the earth into darkness...

He gets side-tracked after finding the soul of his daughter Caliope ... and instead of traveling to Hades, or wherever Morpheus was hiding ... he winds up fighting Persephone and Atlas as the final bosses, and they're introduced in like the last 20 minutes of the game.

I was totally prepared to move-right-along on my way to find and destroy Morpheus after the boss battle with Persephone, only to find that I had FINISHED the game! ...

Now, don't get me wrong ... I'm not dis-satisfied with the experience, I just felt that the story-telling was a bit strange, it side-tracked and diverted from the original narrative towards the end worse than an episode of Family Guy!

Yeah, I agree.

I'm also sort of disappointed with the implications of the final boss battle. It detracts from the scale of the very first PS2 God of War story.

I loved this game as well - I really think it's the best single game on the PSP to date, and I feel it's a substantial cut above Crisis Core (playing that right now)... If GoW can't move software for the PSP, the system's in worse shape than I thought... I can't understand for the life of me why it isn't selling games anyway; I mean, you'd think selling 250,000 copies of something to a user base of 15 million + would be pretty easy...

anyway, Frankie:
{spoiler alert - response to Frankie_Says_Relax's comments above - highlight text to read it}

... I thought the narrative was that the Gods thought Morpheus was to blame, but it turned out he was bound, and Persephone was the real villain (in concert with the Titans) all along ...
