I bought a Japanese AES and a US Magician Lord. The system thinks the Magician Lord is the Japanese version and is displaying the language as Japanese, is there any way to change this or do I have to buy a US system?

nope , can't change it unless you get the system modded. All AES games will display in the language that the system region is. JAP system , everything you put in it will be JAP version. US, all games will play as US, including JP carts.

If you don't mind a little tinkering under the hood, the unibios will allow you to play the game in any region. It even lets you play the arcade (MVS) version of your AES games.

That's not a bad price, really, TC. Razoola (the guy who makes the UniBIOS) charges $30 for the chip (though you can download an older version for free and flash it yourself), so it's basically an extra $20 for installation. On the AES, you'll have to solder it in, which can be a royal pain, especially if you've never done anything like that before.

Also, Magician Lord may be an exception, but most Neo Geo games allow the player to choose which language to display in the options/settings.
That being said, the UniBios is totally worth getting anyway. I have one in my big red, 4 slot cabinet and it is VERY cool to be able to switch from AES Bios, to MVS North America, to MVS Europe, to MVS Japan. There are little reasons in different games to make such agility desirable.
Also, the Unibios comes packed with some nice "cheats" for almost every game on the platform. Little things like turning off the timers in the sports games, to invincibility in shooters, etc. TOTALLY worth getting.

Don't forget the jukebox mode, plus the ability to set debug switches :)
