Hey everyone,
I just bought a NES lot, and the Excite Bike in it felt heavier than normal. I quickly grabbed a screwdriver and cracked it open to find it contained the Famicom Adapter. \\^_^/
Now that I have this, I am wondering if there are any good, cheap Famicom games that I should pick up. Obviously I am looking for stuff you can't already get on the NES, also looking for stuff that doesn't involve knowing a lot of Japanese.
Lastly, will this open the door to playing Doki Doki Panic and the REAL Super Mario Bros. 2 on my NES?
Thanks

Keep an eye out for Contra, I hear it's better than the original.
yhep, slight graphical enhancments in the jp version of contra and some extra scenes like an introduction and map...but then if you don't know japanese its not so much of a big deal anyways.
Hello, although its usually not cheap ( @ 30.00 ) I highly recommend getting the Famicom version of Splatterhouse. The Game ROCKS !!!

I personally recommend Gradius II for some solid shooter action, as well as Galaxian if you're a fan of the arcade game.
I also second Contra, if you're at all a fan, the little extra bits make it all the more awesome.

I would seriously get a multicart, I have a couple gyromites converted to a 84-1 and a 42-1. I have Tetris the tengen version on one, excitike, Ice Climber with the dude clubbing seals instead of a fluffy creature. Splatterhouse is good, a would google for famicom fan sites to get a good list of the minimal japanese or no japanese language games. There's a few sites that have reviews too.

30 british pounds, or maybe euros...it cost me a good deal to get it with all the stickers and such.
Contra on FC is overrated, honestly. The NES version does everything the FC does but without the distractions :P

Recca if you are into shooters. I dunno if they command a high price or not, but, It'll be worth every penny.

WHOOPS, I was unaware that both DokiDoki and SMB2 were only FDS games as ...
... I swear I've seen both of those (I guess dumped and/or pirated) on cartridges.
Even if they weren't official releases, can somebody confirm if Doki Doki and SMB2 JAP were ever on Fami Carts?
The Tengen version of Tetris, which can be a chore to find in the US for a reasonable price is on like, every Famicom Multicart. So if you ever wanted that - now's your chance to play that one if you happen to come across a reasonably priced multicart.
I'd also reccomend picking up GOONIES 1, which was never released in the US (except in Nintendo Vs. Arcade units and Play Choice 10's), that's a personal favorite of mine and a great early Konami/Nintendo platformer.

There's more to using these than simply finding one and plugging cartridges into it. You need to flip the 60 pin Famicom passthrough over so the longer end is facing out. You also will probably need to thin it out for most Famicom games to fit over it. I have an editorial about these cartridges here (http://www.classicplastic.net/dvgi/editorials-davidnesconvert.html). I usually build them into full-fledged standalone converter cartridges, which is a lot of work but yields a 100% authentic Nintendo components converter cartridge.
Also, this probably won't be the key to Doki Doki Panic and SMB2j since those are FDS games.
That's right, one of these won't let you play FDS games, it will however allow you to attach an FDS drive.

There are pirate cart versions of both doki doki panic and mario 2, they are a little buggy, most of the mario2 ones crash when it tries to "save" after you beat 8-4, havn't gotten a hold of the doki doki one yet so no idea how well it was ported.
several fds only games have recnetly been ported to regular cart format (mostly in china) I know the japanese version of 3d world runner was another.

...I knew there was a reason that I saw Super Mario 2 JAP (or the lost levels, whatever you want to call it) on a Famicom Cart ... and had forgotten/ignored any prior knowledge that it was only an official Nintendo release on the FDS
I have (a pirated) one! ROFL (It's amazing what you can FORGET you own.)

I also remember when I was younger, in Junior High I think, I had a friend who had a full Famicom setup (with no FDS) and impressed/confused myself and all of my friends with a working copy (which I guess was also a pirate dump) of Doki Doki Panic (just a few months after Super Mario 2 was released in the US).
So, if you're willing to go the HK pirate cart route, I think you can probably find both.

I first suggest to buy or get a good multicart which typically has many simple, but fun games ranging from Battle City to Sky Destroyer.
Also, from my experiences on more complex Famicom games, I'd suggest
Adventure Island 4, (Good adventure platformer, feels different from previous Adventure Island games)
Kid Dracula, (Feels like a good Megaman and Castlevania mash-up)
Final Fantasy 3
Moon Crystal, (very solid platformer, although nothing special)
Puyo Puyo, (You probably know that game)
Quarth (a good combination of a shooter and puzzle game)

Wow,
Thanks for all the replies guys. It's funny you should mention Contra. I bought the NES lot just so I could get Contra. I've been wanting to play that game for a long time.
Nice read on the adapter InsaneDavid. Your first option of
"Open up each Famicom game, swap the Robot Gyro board with the other game board, reassemble the Gyromite cartridge and do this each time you change games." was what I was intending on doing.
Where can I find one of these multicarts people are suggesting? Also, does anyone have a list of the games on these carts?
Artman40... Wasn't Final Fantasy 3 released on the SNES/Super Famicom?
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I can't even find a copy. Someone I was trading with had one but they wouldn't even give me a price, they just told me to buy a $30 repro cause it would be "much" cheaper.
Absolutely true.
Recca was released as a "Summer Carnival" game by Naxat, same as at least two PC-Engine CD games. Those games tend to be cheaper than their regular versions now (one is missing an intro FMV), but Recca only got released on cartridge as this title.
It's pretty rare. Was it just sold at some convention? I don't know. The other SC '92 release, Alzadick, is missing the FMV, yet is easily bought and was about $30 last I checked, less than the regular release of the game. Perhaps the games were available in a catalog; I've no idea, personally.
I've always been interested in buying a complete copy, but with the manual and box it'll reach into hundreds of dollars (don't have an exact figure, probably more than $200 though).

Game by Kyugo (Ninja Cop Saizou)
Local. by Taito (Wrath of the Black Manta)
If you've ever heard of "Wrath of the Black Manta", you should know that the FC version is vastly different except for the actual gameplay. Odd that the European release was the version of Wrath that even hinted at this (it mentions Kyugo in the opening)
--------
Game by Falcom (Ys, Ys II, Ys III)
Though it may be better picking up the Complete remake... these weren't bad. Just have some translations with you, you should be able to find them virtually everywhere (as in ROMs).
But for Ys III, if you HAVE to play it, get the SNES version. This one was released in America...
