Though not as critically acclaimed or financially successful as other games of its ilk (http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=gta&x=0&y=0), The Getaway series has found a cult following in the "Get Carter" crowd -- the aficionados of British crime cinema. This niche group of gangster-loving film buffs will probably be pleased to learn that not only is a Getaway release still on its way to the PS3 (http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/03/07/you-wont-get-away-that-easily-getaway-3-still-in-production/), but a film adaptation of the game is also possibly in the cards.

These hints were dropped by The Getaway 3's writer, Katie Ellwood, who mentioned that SCEA was in talks with various production houses to try and hand off the rights to bring the series to theatres. It's certainly a better body of work to base a movie off of than other (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nlrccN9jr0) game-adapted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8xm_WmRuoc) films (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAxG4u_rqug) we can (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UkLiZt38Kg&feature=related) think of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaNoQCokHo8) -- a sentiment we wouldn't suggest disagreeing with, unless you wish to be fed to half-starved pigs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HAQ3pNHwj4) (link NSFW, and completely awesome).

If the plot & character's of the original game are anything to go by then the movie could end up being another hackneyed imitation of a trite genre, that is the British Gangster movie. I didn't mind the formula transposed into a game because it had some neat touches but reversed into a movie it could fail. I did enjoy The Getaway, for it could be really amusing at times with all the 'you mappet' & Routemaster jacking shenanigans! I would be interested in playing a PS3 sequel but I honestly doubt the film would hold much interest for me.

Yeah, I really like the Getaway games, but their whole multiple characters/plotlines gimmick has been gone in a ton of movies. If they actually get a quality writer and director, it could be interesting though.
