Anyone else pick this up? (Or going to?) I'm happy to say that, so far, this one seems well worth the $30. Yeah, it's a straight port of HOtD 2 Dreamcast and 3 Xbox, but that's not such a bad thing. The Wiimote as a lightgun works at least as well as the guns for the DC and Xbox.
My one beef, why not have HOtD 1? Hell, I'd have traded 3 for 1. Oh, and I still don't like 3 as well as 2. :)
Anyway, I can be a tough audience for these things, but this collection is recommended. Now Sega, bring on Virtua Cop!

Hell, I preached this when they announced the HOTD 2-pack for the Wii! Why does Sega hate the Virtua Cop series? :(

I've had the game reserved for a while. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Along with Virtua Cop, Namco needs to re-release Point Blank 1, 2 & 3 for the Wii. That game SCREAMS Wii appeal.

Since as you said, HOTD 1 and 2 were ports of existing code from semi-modern systems, if you've ever played HOTD 1 on Saturn, you'll know while pretty arcade accurate in terms of speed, it's super low-res and kind of blocky ... they probably felt a straight port wouldn't be up to the visual standard of the other two.
I really enjoyed part 3 ... so I'm looking forward to getting this one at some point.

Do you think they might be making a remake of the first like Capcom did for Resident Evil 1?

Hmmmmmm... well, perhaps I'll spring for it, as I do like my HotD... and the LCD Topgun I got doesn't work nearly as well for HotD3 as I thought it would. Still, Sega is phailing for A: Not releasing House of the Dead 4, and B: ESPECIALLY not Virtua Cop 3, which I have yet to play but goddammit, I REALLY want to. And no original HotD? We have yet to get an arcade-perfect port of that one; lord knows how choppy the Saturn one was. Unless it's being released as either a Virtual Console title or something related to WiiWare, I see no reason why they should have omitted it. Really, they could have just had an HotD trilogy to promote the possible release of HotD4 with a lot of extra stuff released for it like the console ports of the previous HotD games...
... now that I think about it, this release is not making me happy. They could have done so much more with it. :shameful:
Maybe release a Virtua Cop trilogy with an at-long-last home release of VC3, and we'll call it even. Until then, Limecat is not pleased.

I just got SSBM, so my game budget is a bit tapped right now, but I'll probably eventually pick it up. I loved HOTD2 on the DC, and have HOTD 2/3 on the Xbox, but it isn't the same without a gun.

This is great! Might be time to re-purchase a Wii if they continue to bust out good light gun based games...
I have always been a fan of the light gun based games. It's just too bad the genre isn't as popular as it once was.

If it would have included HOTD 1 as well I may have had to break down and buy a Wii "still don't have one". Yet again something that could have been great, held back....I've been waiting on a HOTD 1 port since the Saturn version "which was lame".
Seems so dumb they don't just release the whole f'in collection, but NOOOO, I just don't get it.

This is very nice, cuz it doesn't require a POS lightgun.. and connecting a system that I have sitting ina box.

I loved Ghost Squad... so I'll be picking this one up. $50 is still too much for RE:UC, when you're cheap like me.

Could have done more? Sure. If Saturn emulation was a hang up, they could have brought over the PC rev of HOtD1. Could have added content, even just an art gallery or something. But, for $30, I'm not complaining. Hopefully the fact that this doesn't require an additional peripheral and it isn't a minigame collection will make it fly off the shelf an encourage Sega to do the Virtua Cop collection.
Really though, if you like these games, snag it.

Why wouldn't they include HotD 1? Idiots. I think the Wii handles these types of games pretty well, so I'm planning on picking it up. I sold my Xbox copy of HotD3 a few weeks ago just for the occasion.

Definitely a game I'm going to pick up here, fairly soon. I've never actually played any of the console ports of the games but have played it quite a bit at the arcade.

The official PC release? :p
(Considering Sega used PC releases for Sonic R and Sonic CD, they could probably easily do the same with PC HotD.)
Yeah, it's a straight port of HOtD 2 Dreamcast and 3 Xbox, but that's not such a bad thing.
Don't forget HotD 3 XBox also included HotD 2. (Or was that only PC HotD 3 again?)
Whatever. I just want my Typing of the Dead!

I also think that this is great news for house of the dead fans. I'd like to see Sega also make a return of the virtua cop series as well. You know though, we all wish for these kinds of games, and then other people will be like "oh well they are just pushing more ports with wii controls attached". I personally am for ports of games but I know a lot of things on the internet give crap to companies for re-releasing games. I say as long as they do a good job with it, bring it on.

typing of the dead is great. Love it on my dc but I don't think it could really see release on a newer system. Maybe a reprint on pc? Or does xbox have a keyboard now?
They should have included HOTD 1 the saturn version is tricky to find and not very good compared to the arcade. Played HOTD3 on xbox but no gun so it kinda sucked.
What I really want is HOTD4 my god that game is fun at the arcade with the motion sensing guns you shake and everything (and one that blows air at you) release that on 360 and or ps3 (hell maybe wii) or all of em even and that'd be sweet!
more virtua cop makes sense to. And maybe confidential mission from the DC? Not likely though it didnt do well on dc. Deserves a second chance though. Also point blank makes great sense the DS version was great.

Yeah, 360 has USB keyboard support. Typing of the Dead would make a killer XBLA release. I'd drop 800 points on that one in a second.

The Wii has USB keyboard support also. It would have been a nice unlockable to have Typing of the Dead.

Some sort of Sega light gun collection would be great. Or maybe they could put them out on Wiiware.

I will probably pick up HOTD for Wii, because I just picked up the Nyko Perfect Shot and want to use it. I think it would be pretty cool if they re-released Killer 7 for the Wii, considering it is an on-rails shooter I would like to use a light gun to play.

There is a mystery unlockable somewhere. I haven't bothered to find out what it is yet because I kinda like surprises. (Please let it be Typing of the Dead. LOL)
And, yeah, IIRC HOtD 3 had 2 as an unlockable.

Didn't the japanese release of 2 on the DC have 1 as an unlockable? I heard that somewhere, but it wasn't in the US one so I never new if it was true or rumor.

House of the Dead one was pretty much Saturn only. I'm heart borken they couldn't find a way to get it on the compilation. I can't recall if I ever beat it on the Saturn. One of the great "last games" for a system's demise.
I do recall an article saying Sega lost the original files for Panzer Dragoon Saga, so maybe that was the case with HoTD. :/
That said, I think my GF and I have played through HotD2 more times in 2 days than I did the DC original in my entire lifespan of owning it. It's amazing what a small cursor can do for you. :D

I finally got to play Virtua Cop Elite Edition (Rebirth in Japan) and , although not a super, brand new version of both Virtua Cop 1 & 2, I think its a damn good combo and its even more annoying that it was never released in America. If youre gonna release HotD 2&3, release the Virtua Cop collection also on the Wii so Americans can finally enjoy it! It would be the same as how they had to just quickly port HotD 2&3....Forget about asking now for HotD4, Virtua Cop 3 or even a remake of HotD1 as that would actually involve Sega doing more work than just porting 2 games....

I'm sort of disapointed by this game -- not because it doesn't have the original HotD on it, but rather that it's not all that fun. Or, at least, it's not nearly as fun as Ghost Squad. I am hoping to get my backordered Perfect Shots by the end of the month, and betweeb GS, HotD and RE:UC, I will defintely be getting GS.
Hopefully, there will be a couple of more light gun style games soon, and I hope that one of them will be a killer app.

I picked up this game today with some gift cards I got from Gamestop, after getting some attitude from the clerk there for asking for a shrink wrapped copy. I almost walked out of there empty handed, but remembered this game had came out. I have yet to try it out, but will probably try it later tonight.

HOTD 2 & 3 pack is coming in 2 days, I can't wait. I'm under the impression that Sega will have HOTD 1 ad a hidden bonus. It just seems a bit silly to release 2 and 3 but not 1 as well.
The japanese version comes with the option of a gun pack. I can't wait for this too arrive !!

Picked this up used for $17 and played around with it and got bored. I think these games are just not fun without another person to play with. I'm going out to Southern CA next week to see my bro and we'll blow through both these games. I have the original for Saturn but I had these cheap ass 3rd party guns that would always stop working after like the 3rd level so I never beat it.
Also, I'm horrible at the training missions. I cannot get past the barrel shooting which is like the 3rd mission. Anybody else suck as bad as me?
Captain Wrong
03-18-2008, 11:41 AM
Yeah, the barrels have me stuck too. I used to be decent at this game. LOL
OK another thing: I got this in a bundle at Fry's with a generic Wii gun. We also bought the official Wii Zapper. Much to my suprise, the third party gun is easily better. The Zapper is too big and the trigger is way too light. The third party one feels just right all around. Anyone else notice this?

Sorry if this was asked/answered before in this thread or elsewhere ...
Can you:
A.) Calibrate the wiimote/shot accuracy on this game like in Ghost Squad?
B.) Turn the cross-hairs completely OFF?
UniHamachi
03-18-2008, 04:39 PM
a) Yes, you can calibrate. I haven't really noticed, but according to IGN the calibration gives you the best accuracy on the Wii.
b) You can turn the cursor off.

Picked this up yesterday ... officially exhausting the stock of Best Buy gift cards that I had been slowly using since the holidays.
My impressions after an evening of playing (both HOTD 2 and 3) with my girlfriend are as follows (in no particular order) :
People who have complained/insisted/explained in great technical detail that the Wiimote is not and can not be used like a light-gun peripheral in any way/shape/form ... are simply put, wrong.
The action/accuracy of the gameplay in HOTD 2&3 Return proves to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that - with the combination of the calibration mode (which allows users to correct the 1/2 inch up/down inconsistency that Wiimote gun shells like the Wii Zapper and the Nyko Perfect Shot create on target shooting games with no calibration option like Wii Play) and the ability to remove the target reticule completely (which some people INSISTED could simply never be done) that the Wii is now a perfect home for any/all rail-shooters/target shooting games of the past few decades. (Time Crisis, Virtua Cop, Point Blank, and so on and so forth)
As stated, both games are pretty straightforward ports of their Dreamcast/XBOX counterparts, but both look great on the Wii and most importantly notable, neither by virtue of the Wiimote/LED bar hardware require ANY "flashing" screen action to capture the draw position of the pistol's target.
The only downsides I can find in this package are the obvious lack of HOTD 1 ... it's sad that Sega didn't/couldn't include that one to round out the complete set of home console ports (yeah, I forgot there was a HOTD 4 in arcades) ... and this is also the first game for the Wii that does something that I had predicted would be an intrinsic problem with the hardware prior to it's release ... causes arm fatigue. I credit Nintendo and other developers for having done a great job to date with not creating game control schemes that require arms being held in the extended and prone positions. Sadly, by nature of this being a "light gun" game ... this one causes the lactic acid to build in your arm muscles pretty quickly.
Overall, this is an awesome set, even if it doesn't include the 1st game in the series, and HOPEFULLY this will make believers out of those who have insisted to date that the Wiimote absolutely in no way can be effectively be implemented as a light-gun peripheral...because it can. Just play this one to see.

to get around the arm fatigue issue i place a pillow on my lap and rest my arm/wiimote on it, that way i can just pivot the wiimote and flick to reload.

I just bought this game yesterday and it's pretty much exactly what I expected. I actually like the reticule. People hat on the Wii Zpper because none of the current ligt gun games were actually designed to use it and all of the games prior to the release of the Zpper/ Link's Cross bow training are pretty much unplayable with the Zapper. This was taylored for the Zapper and I have no problems playing with it at all. They do a few things to add replay value but it's a game with the depth of an arcade game and to think otherswise would be setting yourself up for dissapointment. $30 for two great games that are worthy of being brought back sounds like a deal to me.
