now that gamecrazy has stopped carrying NES games (losers), and all of the music recycleries seem to have gone under, i know of only 3 places in chicago that sell used NES games...

there are two pawnshops (same owners) called Cash Converters out in the suburbs. one is in Des Plaines off of Golf and Milwaukee, one is in Hoffman Estates at Golf and Roselle Road. there is usually nothing special there, but sometimes you can find good stuff. worth checking out if you're in the area.

there's also a place called Video Games Etc (i think that's the name) just north of Harlem/Irving Plaza on the NW side of the city. they have a pretty good selection, but some of their prices are (i think) a little on the high side. definitely the marquee place in the area to go to though...at least that i know of.

does anyone else know of places in or around chicago where NES and other classic games are sold? you don't have to worry about me coming in and stealing your spots, I don't have that much cash right now and will be moving to Central IL within the next month and a half. I'm just hoping to make a couple stops and check some places out before I leave.

I know of a place called the DISC RECYCLERY. There are actually two of them. Maybe more. The one I go to is in Niles. On Touhy and Carpenter Rd. (Also known as Niles Center Road). They're in a shopping complex next to the Best Buy. They deal in used CDs, DVD, Video Games etc. The last time I went there they only had a couple of NES titles and I didn't need any of them. They also carry Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Dreamcast, TG-16 (although that was on a rare occassion), and all modern consoles.

I'm mistaken. The name of the store is DISC RELAY notDisc Recyclery. Sorry.

Music Recyclery in Gurnee Mills used to have pretty decent classic games; trouble was it was really expensive. I've been out of Chicago for about 8 months now, but the last time I went their stock was dwindling. Don't know if they're still at it anymore.

Out near me when I was in the western suburbs all I had was GameStops/EB's/BB/CC and Target/Meijers/Walmart (I had one Music Recyclery that was next door to an EB, it sucked). Mind you I could hit up something like 8 GS/EB's in a 10 miles radius of my location in Schaumburg, not counting the other big boxes. Hell Dangerboy and I made it a day going up and down Golf Rd. one day hitting up stores.

For marquee stores Sean Kelly's store Video Games Ect. is THE store for the area. I know of no other indy shops.

Another vote for Sean Kelley's store which is right across from Harlem Irving Plaza on Harlem Road in Norridge. I don't have the exact address.

In the Schaumburg area there is an awesome Disc Replay that has lots of classics, also a Cash Converters where I've found some good deals. Disc Replay is especially good for stocking up on last gen games, I've picked up a lot of great games for 3.99 or less!

Video Games Etc.
4357 Harlem Ave.
Norridge, IL 60706

You can hit up People's Choice Video on Grand Ave in Waukegan for a limited stock of Video Game classics, they don't get it in too much now though.

Trader Jon's in Round Lake Beach is also a fair place to find games but expensive though.

The Music Recyclery is no more.

I know somewhere there is an old thread with locations but there are a ton of new thrifts around.

of course Seans store.

there are thrifts that have regular odd video game surges, west dundee scored me a vectrex, thrifts in mchenry, and gurnee have stuff on rotation, salvation army in mchenry and vernon hills has stuff. i passed another store on broadway in chicago that has a neon atari logo in it, USED GAMES sign but didnt stop in, i was somewhere around addison ave.

If you never have been there, in VOLO one guy has a ton of stuff and claims more at home, no clue who he is, but i have gotten a TON of stuff from here including excite bike rally and a few unopened snes games. and random other stuff still sealed. he seems to have found internet prices but i have evidence that he have not found a current price for everything, you just need to go and do some research, bound to be more finds there.

i was just there taking some pictures to check out later.

'nother plug for Sean's store. I've personally grabbed quite a bit there, both as a collector and as an aspiring store owner :)

People Play Games is another one. The address is 3268 North Clark Street. I bought a few games from them a couple months back. The prices aren't the greatest and they didn't have a couple of the NES games that I was looking for but they're another place to try.

It seems that all the stores that carry the old games always price them too high. Back in college in the mid 90s, I picked up 75 Atari/Coleco games for $25 at a flea market. The best way to go I think is Ebay these days.

I live in the Chicagoland area and People Play Games and Video Games Etc are a good 20 miles from me. Gas for driving to both places, somewhat high prices, combined with Cook County sales taxes has sadly driven me to do a majority of my purchashing on ebay.

If I'm in the area of either of those shops I will stop in though.
