Great ad for a great car. I love Spy Hunter. And now for my car guy rant.

For those that might not know, the G8 is essentially a re badged Holden Commodore, a RWD Aussie muscle car. The current gen Commodore has a very high quality rating, and G8 impressions have been favorable so far. Comparisons have been made to the BMW 5 series in terms of the cars suspension and driving dynamics. This isn't another dud like the Grand Prix we've been fed by GM for the last 25 years.

That's awesome! Hands down my favorite arcade game of all time, and now a contender for most excellent commercial of all time!

Great ad, although sadly I wonder how many non-gamers these days will understand the reference?

Do you frequent any car related forums 'cause it sounds like you do. I'd recommend you check out the Holden Coupe 60 concept if you haven't already. That car is amazing. Anyway I'm waiting for a G8 GT to hit the local dealership to see it in person. The car is amazing even though it is essentially a rebadged commodore, as you stated. I'm glad they chose to give it a different name instead of making this the next Grand Prix or Bonneville. Can't wait to see the GXP.

That was the best commercial I've seen all year.

That commercial contains 97% win and 3% post-consumer recycled fiber! (And this is coming from someone who's worked in TV commercial production and generally skips all the ads.)

Way better than the few (http://www.thelogbook.com/work/1999/08/the-windows-campaign/) times (http://www.thelogbook.com/work/1996/01/the-huddle-launch-campaign/) that I tried to sneak retrogaming references onto everyne's teevee.

Very good commercial, wish it was longer. Second best Pontiac commercial of my lifetime, after the one where the Trans Am ingests the Lamborghini and craps it out of the exhaust.

well surely you guys both know that prior to this, the Holden Commodore was being sold as the GTO here in the US... so why did they decide to stop selling it here, then start selling it here again, and call it the G8 instead of the GTO? is it because of all the fuss about it not living up to the GTO name, or what?

Well, they're from 10+ years ago, and they're no-budget local spots as opposed to national spots with a big budget. I thought it was an amusing contrast though. :p

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when we jump out of the game footage, does the music suddenly switch to the Art Of Noise/Duane Eddy version of "Peter Gunn"? If so, that spot is a total '80s-gasm.

So if you drive the G8 into a river, does it turn into a boat? :D

I see the Spy Hunter movie has been pushed back to 2009 now.

Actually, the *cough* GTO *cough* was based on the Holden Monaro, but it was still built on the same RWD platform as the previous Commodore. The big differences being that it was a two door coupe with different sheet metal, and (I think) a different wheelbase.

That car was a disaster from the start for two reasons. One, it was priced much higher than GM initially intended it to be. It was supposed to be a high, twenty grand priced muscle car, to compete against the Mustang GT, seeing as the Camaro/Trans Am F-body cars had been discontinued in 2002. Instead, due to importing costs, its MSRP got knocked up a few grand. And second, they named it as the GTO. Now, the Monaro we got is a nice car. The problem though, is that GM associated it with an iconic muscle car from the 60's. The 2004-2006 GTO had no nostalgic resemblence to the GTO's of days gone by. Muscle car enthusiasts didn't take to it because it wasn't really a GTO. These two factors resulted in poor sales, which is why the car was discontinued after only three years.

The G8 is a clean slate. It's not clinging onto a classic 60's nameplate, and due to the numerous 4-door based Zeta cars GM releases all over the world (the Holden Commodore is also sold in Europe as a Vauxhaull, and in Asia as both a Chevy and a Buick, and the Chineese LOVE Buicks), manufacturing costs and importing costs wont be so high, thus it will have a more modest MSRP than the GTO.

I feel like I might have derailed this videogame related thread now, sorry :D
