Right off of RT 40 in Essex/Golden Ring area of Baltimore County. They have games for sale from the Atari 2600 and up to all the current systems. They are always buying game, dvds and cds. Alot of my penny strategy guides went to them. It's also the place I found the Brady Games Final Fantasy 7 strategy guide for $11:)

I cruise that part of the beltway on my way to work. Can I have more detailed directions, or would you prefer to keep it as your private hunting grounds?

Can't say I've ever had any luck dumpster diving, unless you want to count bad luck.

Twice, I've been in the middle of hunting in rental store dumpsters only to have an employee or two from that particular business show up with a bag or two of trash, one of those times it was a store manager with a big ego (and matching gut) who started explaining how much money their location loses each year because of dumpster pickers. WTF?!

Another time (more recently), I am out back of some Burger King, following a tip that they'd thrown away a bunch of those BK Xbox games because that promotion had ended and all of the signs had come down. The plan? Secure handfuls for future auctions or tradebait.

This ill-fated mission concludes when I bump into some late teens, zit covered goof ball who is in nothing but his underwear and busy changing into his BK uniform next to the dumpster. The first words out of his mouth were "Holy shit" and he blasts into some explanation about how their changing room was occupied but he had to get into uniform before being late because he had already been late twice that week. As for the games, they never made it to the dumpster. Between customers and employees, those were picked clean.

I don't see any dumpster diving in my future.

You just have to be in the right place at the right time. Once I caught a highschool trashing their old computers for new ones (this makes sense right?) and I easily picked up 20 computers and monitors.

Its amazing what people are stupid enough to throw away.

Back on topic though, I think this was probably fake. ^^;

Out of curiosity then, has anybody else here then had any luck finding anything in a video game stores dumpster? I'm thinking I just might try it, but at hours in which they are not open of course!

For those interested and without the dumpster diving, just ask at the counter. Both stores here...sadly weren't chucking anything. But both places mentioned if they were they're just hand it over.

They also mentioned this is primarily happening with more midwestern stores, though Rome, NY may be an exception in terms of this state :P

Question. If your caught dumpster diving, can you be arrested?

Question. If your caught dumpster diving, can you be arrested?

I would assume that you can if they wish to pursue it since it is trespassing and possibly theft if you actually take anything. In the office building where I work, my office is located beside the loading dock where they haul out the trash. Therefore, I have the opportunity to pick up tons of boxes and packing materials. I have also picked up a variety of stuff over the years. One guy I worked with pick up one of those high-tec dry erase boards that hook up to your computer and print out whatever you draw. He did have to buy the cable and software, but that only set him back a little over $100 for a board that retails for over $1000.

Can't get you for theft. Trash is pubic domain.

Well, I guess sometimes you never know what you'll find in the dumpster... :puke:

I seriously doubt anyone would be arrested over it. It certainly isn't stealing but they could get you for tresspassing. I'm pretty sure that most states have laws against it but I think that's more for insurance reasons. And so you can't sue the company because a cat scratched out your eyes while you were in their dumpster the night before.

I've gotten TV's (1 a large screen projection) and stereo equipment from dumpsters before. Sadly no gamming stuff though

I know that on CSI they always talk about how they can go through trash that has been put out for collection, but I didn't think that would apply to trash in a Dumpster that is property of the hauling company that is not set out at the street for collection. (How is that for a run-on sentence?)

Oh yeah, search the forums long enough and you'll find some stories.

Haven't done much myself, and therefore, I haven't found much. Best thing I got out of it was a box for GBA Namco Museum, in excellent shape with the manual, other documents, and even the little plastic baggie for the cart. Turned my cart only copy into a complete one.

The only way you can get in trouble is if the dumpster is enclosed. Like the ones that are inclosed with three walls and a gate. Basically if you have to open a gate or a fence to get into the Dumpster.

I used to hit Blockbuster fairly often. I got tons of replacement cases, some artwork/manuals, but never really any games. I got quite a few DVDs though (best find was the first season of the Sopranos, CIB).

So.... what exactly was the point of this thread?

Shucks, I was hoping for the western side of the beltway. Haven't been over that way in years. For some reason when you said Essex, I was thinking Arbutus and confusing Westview with Golden Ring.

Wait a minute, what's so exciting about dumpster diving a bunch of Genesis sports games again? To each his own, I guess, but my dignity is worth a little more than that.

Neil Koch
03-27-2008, 04:20 PM
Yeah, I used to have to go into dumpsters/compactors as part of my job when I worked warehousing. There's no way I'd do that for "fun" now.

As for the legality, like it was posted before, it's legal as long as you're not going onto private property. When I did security at Target, we'd chase off the dumpster divers, not so much to prevent them from "stealing", but if they got hurt there could be potential lawsuits.

My friend works at gamestop. When a game they don't accept is given to them, they either give it to the employees or chucks 'em. He got a lot of Genesis games that way. Not many stores still have them.
