View Full Version : Gamestop is THROWING AWAY ALL SEGA AND N64!

I hate caps... but the title needed it.
Gamestop is literally throwing all Sega and N64 in the TRASH! My friend grabbed 224 Sega games today. They are trashing any and all cartridge games (except Game Boy)!!!
GO! GO NOW!! Check the dumpsters!!

There are over a dozen Game Stop locations in the area and many employees know of classic and retro game stores around here. I'm sure they're already digging around and plan on selling to them and online so I'd doubt it's worth my time. On top of that, most older titles GS *had* were sports and worthless, horrible reject games not even kids could talk relatives into buying. I still have around 300 loose sports cartridges in the garage that came from a pawn shop, all worthless individually and shipping costs more than they're worth. Truthfully, they are best used as target practice and help raise the rarity.

Same here. All the stuff my local GS had is LONG gone.... Lame ass Gamestop. They could at least donate the fucking games instead of trashing them. I'm sure some charity could put them to good use.

If you dug all those carts out of the GameStop trash, how come they were put in GameStop branded plastic bags? Did you ask the guy behind the counter, "Excuse me, we're going to go diving in your dumpster out back, mind if we use a couple of your bags, please?"

I feel like this is one of those times where the saying "too good to be true" really hits hard. Other than the fact that virtually no Gamestop (at least in my area) will have any games to throw out, whatever they do throw out will be the stuff that nobody wanted for the years they sat in the bargain bins and none of the employees ever wanted to take themselves. Every now and then you hear about someone who strikes gold during these escapades but something tells me this isn't one of those times. I don't think anyone will be finding a Gamestop about to throw out Gunstar Heroes.

Why is that Gamestop location suddenly cleaning Genesis games out of their backroom now? Do they need space for all the Dreamcast, PS1 and Xbox disc only sports games that are headed out there to take their place?

The Gamestops in my area actually still sell Genesis/N64 stuff, so I will break the dumpster-diving gloves out of retirement (after I make sure the store isn't still selling them first) and have a look.

I think I'm going to pass just because of the fact that the gamestops I've had around me have been cleaned out of genesis since before ps2 came out if i remember correctly. I really see there being no chance of there being any games worthwhile.

Like I said before, our GameStops haven't had cartridge games for a LONG time... these must have been in the back room.
Reason they are in bags is because I got there and they were going to toss them. That's how I found out about it. These didn't make it to the dumpster!
I guess last week they got a notice from corporate to trash all cartridge games.

I haven't seen Genny carts at local Gamestops in years. There are a handful of N64 carts which are usually relegated to being in the case with the GBA/DS carts or they're behind the cashwrap with the consoles. The carts are either sports crap or high-end games...no middle ground. So if somebody happens to finds a Paper Mario or maybe Battletanx drop me a PM and I will give you teh monies.

I been to a lot of GS in New Jersey and I haven't seen any that sell or still have Genesis N64 or even PS1 DC games? Am I wrong? Hell the only way I found out about the DP store was because a guy at the Clifton GS told me thats only place you can get PS1 games or DC games.

One, the more populated areas sell out of much of the old stuff. Out in the middle of nowhere, might be a different story. Second, remember many of the GS stores might be new, meaning they haven't been around that long. Third, I know of and have read of many a story about people working at GS or EB, finding really old stuff piled up in the stock room. Fourth, no chance I am dumpster diving for any Genesis games.
Aaron7, thanks for the post though, was interesting anyhow.

My local Gamestop's haven't had N64 or Genesis games for years. Plus, if they had some in the back, I'm sure the employees would have gotten first dibs. Plus, if the majority of them are only sports games--they have a street value of like 5 cents each...and thats being generous.

If you can find a larger one that's out of the way they're more likely to have old games, and more DVDs and accessories, too. The narrow little ones in the prime spots just don't have room for it.

So, Aaron, have you sorted through all the junk...er, games?
Can we have a blow-by-blow list of exactly how many Genesis EA Sports titles you have now aquired?
I think you should glue them all together and make some type of modern art sculpture out of them.

My first thought when reading the topic title was "What, again?"
Didn't they do this, like, two years ago and it was advertised?
Even GameCrazy trashed retro a while ago :D
I don't know, the GameCrazy here in Stockton, Ca. still has Genesis and SNES games for sale.
Now that I think about it, all the SNES games are in a glass case while all the Genesis games are in a box right by the door.....

I agree. May as well put it in a big box and sell them for 50 cents each. Hell, since most of the cartridges are plastic and metal they'd probably be better served in a recycling bin than a dumpster.

Actually that is exactly why they are thrown out. I've never understood why we do it at best buy, but we sure do. It's mostly junk like video game guides. Once they're pennied out, instead of selling them for one cent, they are carted up, have the covers ripped off and are thrown out. Lots of other stuff is thrown out as well, mostly promos, freebies, and/or demo discs.

Best Buy, Toys R Us and Gamestop use to sell the pennied out strategy guides for an actual penny. And Circuit City use to do the same thing fo their preorder promo demos. Once the official game came out, they would sell those $5 promo demos for a penny. That was one of my great ebay hustles selling those penny demos and strategy guides for $10-25 each:king:. I wonder why they all stopped selling these items.

I've been into those penny guides for awhile. That's how I got most of my guides. Most of them aren't worth much, but I've tried to focus on the best games and RPGs. I like having the guide to go with my RPGs.
I was really never able to get any penny guides from CC. Toys r Us I did once, but they are a real pain about them. I got several from GS/EB/Babbages. When we had a Babbages, I got several from there. I only ever got a few from EB and I didn't get to many from GS. I did get a bunch from diving at a GS though. They threw out some interesting stuff every once in a while. Best Buy was the best place for me, but I think mine is starting to crack down. Oh well, I'm kind of glad since I've run out of room and don't have any places to put any more guides.

Well then why don't you call up GS headquarters and offer to buy every piece of merchandise that they would normally throw out, and you can sell it yourself to that one person out there who wants it?
Yes, there is somebody out there to buy it, but GS stores have limited space, it costs money to ship stuff around to where there might be a demand for it, and it would likely cost GS more to find that rare buyer than they could possibly make back from the sale.
Seriously, though, if you think it's that easy, start a company that buys up unwanted merchandise for pennies and try to resell it for a couple more pennies.
I'd wager the cost in manpower and transportation would even cost more than GS would be able to save in taxes by deducting the value as a donation to goodwill.

Circuit City here had various $1.00 strategy guide sales. And Toys R US put a 1 cent price tag on every strategy guide they had at one time just to get rid of them. I got like 50 so they definitely go rid of them.
But besides the sales I made, I was able to get alot of guides for my own collection. This is nice because theres no way I would pay $12-20 for a strategy guide when I could get the same info online for free. Don't get me wrong, I love having the actual guide in my hand/collection, but the money it cost could go toward more games.

Because they don't do business like that?
That's actually a good idea. Fill a box full of all the crap they can't sell, slap a $5 price tag on it and ship it off to some dude who might get some use out of it.
Yes, there is somebody out there to buy it, but GS stores have limited space, it costs money to ship stuff around to where there might be a demand for it, and it would likely cost GS more to find that rare buyer than they could possibly make back from the sale.
It doesn't take much floor space to put all that stuff in a box and place it in an easily visible place. Hell, they do it all the time, just walk into an GameStop and you might notice they bargain bin sitting in the middle of the store.
Seriously, though, if you think it's that easy, start a company that buys up unwanted merchandise for pennies and try to resell it for a couple more pennies.
Been there, done that, made a decent living. My cousin has two stories that operate like that. It's not an entirely unheard of thing.
You don't even need a store to do something like this, as there is this wonderful new invention called 'the intrawebs', on which one might be able to connect to 'the eBay' and perform 'intraweb auctions'. Crazy, yeah?

I really haven't sold that many guides. I would usually get one extra besides the one that went into my collection and trade the extra for other guides. CAG is a pretty good place for guide trading.
I can understand about not wanting to pay $12 or more on guides. My usual limit is $10. I got a lot of my Doublejump guides from GS for that price. The SMT: Nocturn guide will be definitely worth that $10 once I get around to playing it. I will pay more than $20 for a guide, but it has to be a hard to find one. Finding either of the ps1 Lunar guides for under $20 would require some real luck.
I do wish that they would mark down guides more instead marking them as a penny and destroying them. Most of the places in my area are strict on these and I hate seeing get thrown into the dumpster. I'd buy more guides if they were marked down a little more.
