Ah, Vectorman. They tried to bring you back into the modern era with an "edge". You were the bomberman zero before there was such a thing. You were canceled for "quality reasons". It's not too hard to see why, you looked like ass.

Unless it received a Sonic-style bastardization, it probably would have turned out just fine gameplay wise.

thats hideous. The original games were great though. Cell animation could work out far better and sitll do 3D.

I wonder what DP's own Vectorman thinks about this?

oh yeah, this looks like anus. i could so see this right now for 3.99 in the ps2 bargain bins at gamestop.

i think cell shading would be a terrible idea too. its VECTORman, not CARTOONman or whatever. he shouldve been beautifully rendered with dreamcast/gamecube style spherical polish. the ps2 was 100% the wrong console for this, also, hes not supposed to be a freaking mech with a bazooka.

That was the first thing that came to my mind. Although the visuals really aren't THAT bad for a game that hadn't even been polished for release (at least that's what I suspect), it just doesn't do the series justice.

I remembered when they showed off the pictures of the game over at IGN. EVERYBODY hated it. The biggest complaint was "Where's the balls!!!?? That's not Vectorman!!"

Looking at the character now it just looks like a more robot version of Master Chief. Maybe the game would have been fun. But the screen shots just looked like trash.

I was going to stay out of this one, but since you asked I'll give my thoughts. ;)

It's a good thing this atrocity was canceled so early on. You can't tell what they were trying to do from these screenshots, other than milk a past franchise by tacking its name onto a Halo clone. The only thing it shares with the original Vectorman games is the name, the color, and possibly the setting (in the future). I could go on and on about how bad this is, but there is really no need as everyone else can see for themselves.

When the GBA first came out, I was hoping it would see a true return of Vectorman. Now, I wouldn't mind seeing one on the PSP, though I don't like the feel of that system as much as the GBA. I would want this to stay off of the DS and modern consoles as I don't want the game to be made with 3D gameplay or have tacked on stylus or motion controls.

Y'know, Sega could have just slapped on a totally different name on it and it would have been perfectly fine. Nobody would have said anything. Trying to make a Vectorman game out of it was not a good idea, since it looks to be nothing like the original.

You said Vectorman screenshots, not early Halo alpha screenshots.

We reported on this (http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=76&title=Forgotten%20Franchises:%20VectorMan) about 3 1/2 years ago (check out the game in motion (http://www.sega-16.com/Features/Forgotten%20Franchises/Vectorman/e3-vectorm511_qt.mov)!), and it did indeed look like ass. Another reason why Sega is all but dead to me...

That's a cool read, nice article.

I can answer why the game was canceled though, Sony refused to certify the game. Sega didn't have the clout to fight the decision, so they had no choice but to cancel the game.
