Word from the Battlefield: Bad Company beta test is that several weapons in the game's arsenal are locked, with "Available for purchase on Xbox Live Marketplace" notations next to them. In total 10 weapons are listed as for sale, with five of them also available in the Gold Edition of the game. What this basically means is that people willing to drop a little extra cash, be it in the store or on Xbox Live, will have more weapons to choose from than someone who scrapes together just enough to pick up the game itself. This is not the way microtransactions should be used. Cosmetic additions and extra maps are all well and good, but allowing players to pay in order to get a leg up on the competition is just slimy. Multiplayer games suffer from enough balance issues without this sort of thing going on. Where will this lead? Perhaps eventually they'll allow you to purchase a much better surrogate player to represent you in matches, taking the term "professional gaming" to an all new level. Maybe we can pay for ammo next! "Everybody down! He bought extra clips!" *sigh*

If this is true I refuse to buy this game.

This is like Gran Turismo HD scheme - Pay for tracks and cars. I'm pretty sure in the future video game industry will start charging gamers for special weapons, armors, accessories, vehicle, & magic. Is it worth it? I doubt it.

I'm pretty sure this is using the Godfather/Tiger Woods model of you can use real money to unlock weapons you'd otherwise have to play through the game and unlock. It's meant for people who want all the weapons and don't have the time or feel like unlocking them.

If it is the only way to gain access to the weapons then this is low. What's next? Charging Street Fighter players $2.00 so they can use the Shoryuken? So the best players are the ones with extra cash to burn? It is misuse of microtransactions (which in principle I don't have a problem with). The best outcome here would be if the market just doesn't support this nickel and diming for content that's already supposed to be in the game and companies feel the pressure to reserve microtransactions for content not essential to the game's function.

If this is an alternative to unlocking the stuff via normal means...then it's really not so bad. In fact, it's brilliant. Though it would be sucky if classic codes begin to disappear in favor of charging money.

Wait so your saying in the "BETA" we need to pay for weapons!?!?! Hell I am outraged that in the real game you need to buy weapons. Like me saying I need to pay for fresh air...

Yes, in the BETA you have to pay for some extra weapons. I would almost bet 100% that it will be the same in the full release.

The weapons are not going to be "for sale" in the beta version. They're subdued into the background and unable to be selected. The pay-for-weapon slots are just "placeholders" until the final retail version is released.

They did the same thing for blue dragon and lost odessy, some items can only be bought off xbox live (nothing glasses amoung a few others in blue dragon, and the lo ones aren't avialable yet but will be). none of the blue dragon items are available in the normal game (and some of them are very usefull) you can get them in the shuffle dungeon very rarely, but you have to pay for the shuffle dungeon to begin with....

Then I misunderstood. I downloaded it but I didn't try to load it.
