Considering that the actual hardware of the N64 was built around Super Mario 64, I think that Nintnento was really exploring 3D at the time. Its wierd to think that there was a time in video games in which 2D was not popular in the mindset of major developers(mid 90s). Also, there is the issue of development costs and time spent on a game. Even in the mid 90s, games were taking some serious cash and years to develop. Once the N64 started to fade, I think that Nintendo was eyeing on a replacement in the fewest steps possible. I consider Super Paper Mario the closest thing we will see for a 2D mario on a console

...and by the way...SMB DS friggin rocks, and to date is my favorite mario to play only second to galaxy

Because at the time 2d games were not popular?

Simply because 2D games had been done well for the last 10+ years by Nintendo's previous systems. With new systems like the PlayStation touting these new fangled '3D' grapics it was the only direction anyone was going to go.

If you want 2D Mario on the 64 go play Paper Mario.

Because Nintendo was very anti-2D very quickly, much moreso than Sony or even Bernie Stolar. Notice they only made one 2D game for N64, and it was sucky. Treasure made two more 2D games for the system, and Nintendo kept one of them in Japan.

Somewhere I remember reading a quote from from someone at Nintendo that stated they wanted to take and keep Mario in 3d. With Yoshi's games (Yoshi's Story) remaining in 2d, but we all know how that turned out.

The weird thing about it was I really loved Yoshi's Story myself. Yet it seems to be one of the most hated games in the Nintendo catalog.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Paper Mario, and Yoshi's Story feature 2D gameplay.

It received a 6.6 overall. Not too bad. On the other hand, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast received a 4.4 overall. Ouch!

You're not talking about Paper Mario now, are you? Because it's brilliant!

Paper Mario and Yoshi's Story are the 2D games I own for the N64, and both are wonderful titles. Sure, Yoshi's Story is kiddish but the colors are brilliant and contains great gameplay. A little on the short side if you breeze right through, but go back and start playing it as a "collecting" game and it'll give you some extra play time. Not much to say about Paper Mario other than it's a must play, whether you like it or not. It's certainly a game you need to sample on the system.

As I've stated so many times before, we need more 2D in this day and age. So many advancements in processing speed, color depth, storage space, and a larger internet demographic there's so much potential. The quick push for 3D didn't give the full chance for 2D to develope over the last decade except on handheld devices. Of course most argue current systems are built off 3D technologies so creating a 2D base wouldn't be nearly as powerful, but think about adding a co-processor dedicated to handling special 2D options. It's possible, just a matter of are they willing to develope that extra bit (or even R&D from another hardware company) at an increase of some $25 to a consoles cost.

When you say 2D, do you mean 2D gameplay (Kirby 64, Viewtiful Joe, New Super Mario Bros., etc.) or do you mean actual sprite-based games (Metal Slug, Alien Hominid, Yoshi's story, etc.)?

Either way, I agree. That's one reason why the Game Boy Advance was so great: lots of good new 2D games! :)

Truthfully, a good mixture. It appears that so many companies are still leaning into 3D polygons with textures and the processor is revolving around how many polygons per second vs sprites on screen. I like 2 dimensional playing fields with a 3D environment and objects floating around, like your Sports games today. Silpheed or StarFox is a good example of this. Fully sprite based games with parallax backgrounds can be amazing, utilized just right on modern hardware would be wicked. So many 3D games today flunk review scores and yet their predecessors built on 2D were just rocking the gaming universe.

I'm slowly working on some feasibility studies and will take a good while longer to complete it. A few friends of mine and I have been researching this idea off and on for a few years. If all goes well I'll make an announcement at that time when development begins but until then there are many other things occupying my time.

No, I loved Paper Mario. Wonderful game. I don't really consider it 2d, though. I was talking about Yoshi's Story, which I loathed. I forgot about Kirby 64, but I didn't like that game at all, and I'm a big Kirby fan otherwise.

Can you imagine how amazing Odin Sphere would've been without the slowdown? It's too bad the hardware it was on wasn't designed to handle massive amounts of sprites instead of massive amounts of polygons.
