View Full Version : Sega CDX headache, any help?

Hi all,

I recently came across a CDX in a bulk buy. There were several broken systems in the lot, but this one really caught my eye. But, of course, it needs a lot of work.

Both the power button and the cd tray open button are stuck. Also, the CD tray doesn't stay down (it doesn't click shut or anything). And for the cherry on top... When plugged in, the display lights up saying "Game 00" and doesn't do anything else.

Any thoughts on fixing this, or is it a lost cause? Thanks for any help on this forum newbie's problem.

Well should we start with the obvious? Maybe so. Did you clean the lazer lense?

Yeah, but it doesn't even attempt to spin the disk. Oh, I forgot to mention that I don't think it's playing carts either. I honestly think it's just a paperweight at this point. I've already gone through about 3 other broken systems from that lot. Working Virtual Boy in there though, go fig.

I think "Game ??" is when the CDX i supposed to be reading tracks during game play. If it has regular screws, open that bad boy up and clean out the buttons. Since the power button won't move, it may be stuck mid 'on/off'.

Only thing I could think of.

i wouldn't reccomend this unless he is very experienced with electronic stuff, i heard the CDX is a bitch to work on due to cramped insides and 4 layer mainboard

When I opened mine I counted three.

Also, agreed they are close to impossible to get apart. Plus you need several sizes of tiny Phillips screwdrivers to boot.

three? i read it was 4 somewhere, i guess that site was wrong then... either that or it was a different hardware revision (sega changed stuff alot, ive seen so many revisions on the genesis and saturn lol) the PSP was pretty bad too, so many tiny screws, different sizes too >.< it was a nightmare having to remember where they all went and the innards of a PSP are very fragile too

That's why I've never opened mine. I couldn't imagine. I think laptops are difficult enough.

i HATE working inside of laptops. so small, so cramped, so full of expensive proprietary parts that are hard to find >.<
