I've mentioned before that I am a sucker for strategy guides, so you can imagine how awesome the idea of penny guides are to me. My question is, does Best Buy/Gamestop/etc still do this? Also, is there any universal time that these stores lower the prices, or is it a store-by-store thing? I just moved and for the first time I have Gamestops and a Best Buy nearby, so I can actively hunt these things now. I've only ever happened upon a penny guide once before, and it was for Final Fantasy III for the PSP (which I don't have).

I hope it's cool that I made this thread. I know there are a couple older threads about penny guides, but they are years old so I figured my chances of getting my questions answered weren't great. Mods, feel free to lock if this was a bad idea.

Best Buy usually drops guides on Mondays. Most other stores it can be anytime. Some stores still do this, but a lot are cracking down. Best Buy has been the easiest for me.

One of the better source of info on reduced price guides is over at cheapassgamer.com. There is a thread in the deals board on penny and reduced price guides. That is where I got started out on penny guides. Their trading board also a ton of people who trade guides as well. A word of advice: buy only guides for games that you have or are planning on getting. It is amazing how fast a book shelf can get full if you aren't careful. I limit myself to guides for top rated games and RPGs (my favorite genre).

Well, all gamestops / ebs would drop at same time, obviously. There's no set pattern though. All on the whim of the buyers at home office.

Read this thread: http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114556. We covered that topic pretty thorougly in there and it's a recent thread. But you are right, penny guides are cool. However, it's an outdated process now for the most part. Many stores will simply throw there strategy guides out after penning them out. And some even rip the covers off before throwing them in the dumpster.

A few years ago I could get penny guides from Best Buy, Toys R Us, Gamestop/EB and the like. But today it's very rare to find penny guides.
