I was in a store and Evil Dead Regeneration caught my eye. I am a huge fan of the movies and Bruce Campbell and with a $8 price tag I couldn't deny myself the pleasure. I bought it, played it, and beat it in two days. The game was laugh out loud funny, the game play was a little repetative, the puzzles were great and it had Sam the half deadite sidekick who was voiced by Ted Raimi, The director's brother, who was the best comic relief in the game. So the real reason I started this thread was "Are the other Evil dead games good enough to play as this game was?"

P.S. I realized this is the classic gaming forum, but the first evil dead game was for PSone and I got Regeneration for xbox.

I'll throw my hat toward Fistful of Bookstick. Twas fun and funny and keeping in the spirit. As much as I wanted to like Hail to The King for PS1/DC, it was just difficult to the point of unplayability. Random Deadite encounters occur ALL THE TIME and you will die unless you're constantly moving - making exploration impossible unless you already know where to look as you run through a room. Wanted to like it - hated it.

And there was an Evil Dead game for the C64 that I used to play the hell out of.

I agree with Sniderman. I TRIED with THe PS1 game but fun was not to be had. Honestly I wonder if the thing was even QAed it was so unplayable. I love survival horror and Evil Dead but this game can be missed.

I played a good mod of Doom II that changed everything into Evil Dead stuff. It'd probably look and play janky now, but for the time, hearing stuff like "this is my BOOMSTICK!" when you picked up a shotgun was pretty cool.

DC version is a bit better than the PS1 version, but yeah it's a hard (especially to control) game. I however found it worth playing through completely once, and halfway the first time, since it was a ps1 rental and the store only gave me the first disc! Beat it on DC however, and it's certainly a rough game but I found it ultimately worth it. Plus it has one of the best puzzle joke scenes...

Boomstick is a quality game as well, but be careful not to save without some ammo and health pickups around as you can save yourself into a corner if you are too low. Did that one a couple times...great ending in that game too. Regeneration is pretty good, kind of a lame title though. Glad to see they got Ted involved.

Or you could just play Duke3D.

Regeneration is the best one I've played so far...but that ain't sayin' much (forgot that I had this one until you brought it up.) Still, it's worth a few bucks if you're a fan of the movies.

There was a FPS a few years back called Blood, the game had all kinds of hints of Evil Dead. Wasn't sure if maybe this was what you were talking abount since the character would always say "This is my Boomstick" whenever he got the shotgun.

Agreeing with everyone about Hail to the King. It's a shame too because it actually seemed to have an alright story from what I read. Fistful of Boomstick...ended up frustrating me to the point of just say the heck with it. The C64 game...wasn't that bad really for what it was at the time.

Regeneration is pretty much the best of the games if you want something recent, just shame it has little replay value in terms of extras.

I played Hail to the King and I was disapointed at the gameplay itself but I was impressed by the story and how much it seemed to have stuck to the movie series. You probably wouldn't appreciate hail to the king unless you were a big fan of the movies. I never played regeneration but I played Fistful of Boomstick and I thought they could have stuck a little closer to the movies but the gameplay was a bit better this time around.

No, it wasn't Blood, it was a fan-made TC mod for Doom II.

I enjoyed Regeneration a lot...it's the only one where Bruce/Ash is well rendered as a videogame character, and the graphics, play control, and story were above-average for a budget title.

It has my vote as the best of the Evil Dead games ... and, as a fan of Bruce Campbell and Evil Dead, I'm not going to say anything at all about the first two games ... since I have nothing nice to say about them.

(I do the same thing when people ask me what I thought about "The Man With The Screaming Brain".)

I was most amused by Cmosfm's description of the bugginess of Regeneration in this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72452).

Are you kidding? he worked since the 80s to get screaming brain made. I'm glad it finally did. And Ted was awesome in it. Bruce is always good at hurting himself acting, too.

I know the legacy of the film ... and I'm really not sure WHAT I was expecting.

Was it a Bruce and Ted tour-de-force of goofball, screwball, physical gags and Stooges-meets-B-horror ... stuff?

Yes. Yes it was.

Did I love it?

Sadly, no.

It is what it is, and I do own it, but I just didn't get in to it as much as I would have liked to.

Though, It's much better than Mindwarp or Moontrap.

One of the best B-horror films I've seen Bruce in recently was "The Woods", it's currently on Comcast on demand, I believe on Showtime's lineup if you have that.

Hail to the King is terrible!!

It's the only horror game I've never gotten into [as in made a save in] in my entire collection.

Heck, I've even played crappy [maybe crappier] titles like Chaos Break. But Hail to the King is just unplayable to me.

This reminds me of the video on "Regeneration" where Bruce tells the story of how Matthew Perry checked into rehab/whatever he did some years ago because Bruce told him he sucked at "Hail to the King". :)

Thanks for reminding me ... that's DEFINITELY a reason to pick up Regeneration - the exclusive Bruce interview videos are freaking hilarious.

Don't forget the "Interview" of Bruce on Fistfull of Boomstick also has some true satire...
