Question about a fat PS2

I am buying a non working PS2 today. I'm told that the problem is the laser being "out of place". I am getting the system VERY cheap in the hopes that someone here might be able to walk me through as I attempt to fix the problem. Any takers?

Can't walk you through it, but I hope its less then 5 bucks. I have bought at least 10 all for that price in the last year and sold them for repair on ebay.

Well, it's going to be one of 9 versions. In those 9 versions, there are at least 5 different types of lasers, and 4 different types of laser travel assemblies. Need more info.

We stopped buying broken PS2's more than 2 years ago, and the stack still grows every week.


I hope you paid very little for it, and I hope it's not someone elses failed repair attempt (which is what those junkers usually are unfortunately).

hell if you had put out a request i would have sent you one for the cost of shipping i have literally boxes of broken ps2's with DRE's in my basement lol.

I sold my stack of 5 for $130 then saw another stack of 5 go for $180, which made me made but I only paid $5 for each one.
So to me it is not worth fixing unless you don't have a PS2.

I don't know what the sellers on eBay charge for replacement lasers these days for fatboys, but a few years ago, it was utterly ridiculous. $50-$75 for a laser, while the slimline lasers were only around $20. I just threw mine in the trash and picked up a slimline for $75.

The system started out at $5. They tried to jump it up to $20. I guess I got lucky not to pick it up after all. Ah well. I still want a PS2, I guess I'll save a little "mad money" for a working system.
