I started http://www.chasethechuckwagon.com as I was fed up with ebay's escalating fees, new fomats being shoved down my throat every other month, etc. and created this new Video/Arcade game auction site. I have been getting very favorable reviews on KLOV and RetrogamingRadio forums and was hoping I could post this here for you all to see.

Please check it out and feel free to register if want. Its in its early stages as it launched only a couple days ago, but to compete with eBay I need all the users I can get :)

Let me know what you all think.

Just as a quick FYI, you're also competing with http://www.gamegavel.com, started by another forum member here.

Editorial note: I understand that you are just starting out, but I have been looking at your site for a few minutes and see nothing about your security and privacy policies. Quite frankly, the absence of those as well as finding no knowledge of who verifies your certificate scares me. Caveat emptor should not cover the protection of users' information. If you do all those things already, that's great, but the users need to know about them. I say these things not because I am trying to dump on you and your site, in fact I hope you do well as competition is a good thing, but I am concerned for your safety as well as those who would be using the site.

** We have recently securred our site using GoDaddy's SSL Certificate service. **

I appreciate your concerns. As much as I hate doing this right now, all seller fees are paid via Paypal so it is as safe as they come. Once the site grows a bit, I will secure a proper merchant account. But for now, seller fees are invoiced monthly and then you are directed to paypal to pay for your fees. The registration process doesn't even require giving any credit card or banking info whatsoever, infact. The home page has been updated with this information. Thank you for bringing to my attention.

As far as GameGavel.com is concerned, nice site and great name :) Hopefully there will be room for a couple eBay alternatives in the dedicated video/arcade game auction space. Ebay has anywhere from 250,000-300,000 video game auctions going at any one time, so I think we could both get a piece of it if we can press through the start up period. I am banking on my radio show to help populate it as well - chasingthechuckwagon.com on Retrogaming Radio.

Will give it a look for buying stuff but I have a hard time listing stuff on new sites as the lower traffic on a new site when compared to ebay may not bring in the bids I would be looking for on any item I would be selling.

I , along with all the other Sellers shares this same concern. The one thing ebay does have going for it is bazillions of users :)

But many of the items listed are getting some bids, and all are getting lots of viewss, at least the items I am selling as I can see how many people are viewing each of my auctions. And I will be driving traffic to the site monthly via my radio program which has a pretty large international "classic" gaming audience. So that will add to the views over time. All I can ask is for you to register and list a few things and see what happens. The upside is that you will start off with a $15 seller credit which at the prices I am charging will get you a few free auctions to try the system out.

Other than that, feel free to bid on items as I, at least, will have some great deals on there. The only way to grow this, and to keep this thing moving it to have people that use it. You can still use eBay -- all I would ask is to list a couple things a month.

Hope to see you on the Chuckwagon :)

Mike

I don't have PayPal, so I guess I am SOL.

Sellers are billed monthly for their fees and directed to paypal to make a payment. I don't believe you actually have to be a member of paypal to "make" a payment. But if you want to join, and not use paypal I am sure we could work something out. You could always just mail me a check I suppose :) And if you want to join just so you can bid on things, that would work as well.

Thanks for the kind words. Should help me out over here as for some reason I have not been contributing to these forums, as great as they are. So far we have about 50 registered users in 2 days. Not to bad as far as I can figure. I can't wait for my March episode where I can plug it on the show. That should bring in hopefully lots of new members each month.

If everyone is truly fed up with eBay than they really need to get on here and use the site. They can still use eBay for the majority of there stuff, but just keep throwing a few items on teh Chuckwagon as well. That is all I ask. Sooner or later the snowball effect will take over and it should be off to the races.

Mike :)

Well, looks like me and the gamegavel staff will have to really up the anti with the new competition.

PS - Thanks for borrowing my ideas :)

Like I said before, I think there is plenty to go around. Your site is real nice, as for me borrowing your ideas, not sure which ones they are? I have been in development for over three months and, at most, share the same ideas as you guys. Incentives to bring people in like the credits we are offering are nothing new. I do like your swap function, however, and would like to add that in the future.

We have got our jobs cut out for us going up against you know who. There are lots of gamers out there who are looking for other avenues to buy and sell. They just need to consider our sites, pick one and start using it as much as they would use eBay.

Good luck to you all :)

Good luck with your new site. What other forms of advertising are you running, out of curiousity?

The easy answer on this now, is that in addition to the newsgroups where it is being met with tremendous enthusiasm I will be plugging it monthly to a pretty large international audience of classic gamers via my radio show chasingthechuckwagon.com which airs on Retrogaming Radio. I will also be adding a section to my chasingthechuckwagon.com site that gets a couple hundred hits daily an area where I will plug big ticket or rare items that are on the auction site. This will be an mp3 updated weekly which will assureadly bring lots of attention to "Auctions" of note. Both sites will feed off each other and that is a big part of this.

Other than than that, I have some big things in the works for national/international exposure, but am keeping this under wraps for now :)

And word of mouth is always the best means in my opinion so if you like what you see, join and spread the good word of the Chuckwagon.

I think I would like to say that my original idea for the Chuckwagon was to offer a site for, first and foremost, collectors. I am not worried about bringing in the nontechies and the kids parents to find and bid on items for their kids. I want this to be centered around creating a good auction value for the people on all the newsgroups and generally the video game collectors around the world.

I am creating a site that I would join if I came across it. Trying to dominate the whole world from the start is a sure road to disaster. I will guarantee to all the sellers, that if you want your items seen by hundreds of collectors, than that is what I will do. And keep this in mind, there is alot more competition for your items on ebay so it goes both ways. If you have a super rare item that only true collectors will appreciate and pay big bucks for you will find those types of buyers on the Chuckwagon, even now. If you put it on eBay it will be on there with zillions of video game related items. Just my two cents :)

As it grows, it would be great to pull in everyone else to buy and sell, but for now, I am concentrating on bringing in the thousands of collectors around the world to buy and sell amongst themselves. I have a full time, well paying job so the best part is I am not looking at making a killing with this website. I am truly doing it for the collectors out there. Although, I am definitely dreaming much bigger :)

Another new feature that should make sellers happy is that I have added a new feature to my sister site - http://www.chasingthechuckwagon.com an area called Auction Talk. This will be updated weekly with a short audio commercial for things recently listed on the site. Especially larger ticket or rare items. Basically its a free commercial and trust me it will be listend to buy a few hundred collectors each week. And, no other auction site is even close to offering such a feature. Just another thing that sets The Chuckwagon apart.

See link:

This will be a weekly audio show tied into my existing listener base plugging "items" of note - rare items, big ticket items, or anything else I feel needs to be plugged to bring it more attention. This is a free audio commercial for the items I select. See first show below:

http://chasingthechuckwagon.com/auctiontalk.html

Thanks again for everyone's enthusiasm.

Hey all, if you haven't yet registered on ChaseTheChuckwagon.com, give it a try this weekend. I will be putting some more good stuff on it, and so will some others who have registered this week. I need to keep the momentum going and so far so good. It launced on the 24th and we are nearing 100 registered users. There is also alot more activity than there appears to be. Most of my items have multiple bids.

I will also be finally airing our next podcast in the next week or so, so that will bring more eyes and traffic to your auctions if you consider puting some up.

Remember, you will get a $15 new seller credit which at the prices I am charging should get your first few auctions run for free to try out the system.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for the site. We have had some folks want me to add some additional categories and I have done so -- check out the category list as it sits today.

So far so good and thanks to all who registered on the Chuckwagon !

The Chuckwagon is IN THE NEWS!!

http://news.google.com/news?tab=wn&ned=us&hl=en&q=arcade+game+auctions

I am doing what I can to bring traffic to the Chuckwagon, but I still need the help of you collectors. Please consider giving it a try as many sellers are having successful auctions.

I know many of you have concerns about your item not getting the "eyes" needed to sell your items for a good price, but let me assure you, that if you have something to sell , other than common items, you will get quality bids. It has happened already. In comparison to eBay, go there and search by "atari" and see how many items are ending without any bids. This shows that even on Ebay you can list something and not get a single bid. The bottom line is that if you have something rare, or harder to find, a real gaming collectible, it doesn't matter if you list it on Ebay or the Chuckwagon - It will get bids. If you are worried, just put a reserve on your items and see what happens. The worst case you can just relist it for no cost as we do not charge insertion fees on the Chuckwagon.

Using Ebay is a state of mind, and nothing more. In order to break Ebay's spell, we need to give other auction sites a chance, mine or any other auction site for that matter. So go ahead and jump on the Chuckwagon Bandwagon.

I have already bought on both gamegavel.com and on chasethechuckwagon.com, and I will also be listing some items for sale on both of them soon. I would like to see both sites do well. Plus, the reality is that there are enough videogame auctions going on on ebay such that both sites can do well if they catch a small share of those going on ebay.

Kaboomer
04-07-2008, 05:37 PM
Thanks for giving both our websites a try. We need more people to do the same. If you look at the Chuckwagon auctions, you will see that good items are getting bids. For example, someone just listed a great Vectrex package and it's getting bids (one of them is mine :) It just goes to show, that if you have something worth selling, you can sell it on another auction site -- not just Ebay.

Thanks!

http://classicgaming.gamespy.com/

We are starting to get some press. Just wanted you all to see that I am doing what I can to bring attention and more "eyes" to the Chuckwagon. For you registered Sellers, this will help bring continued activity to your auctions.

We will also be starting an intensive "pay-per-click" campaign which will also drive more traffic and new users to the site.

The Chuckwagon is growing fast ! For those of you still using Ebay, why not try coming over for a trial run? It is growing mainly with collectors from this and many other forums. There is a lot less clutter than Ebay as well and you can deal with collectors you can trust.

Thanks again.

We are having lots of activity in only the first couple weeks since launch March 24th 2008.

Stats from the first 2 1/2 Weeks on ChaseTheChuckwagon.com.

Category List Hits: 8,088
Searches: 2,541
Item Views: 7,223
Item Bids: 299
Registered Users: 146

Many users are accumulating Positive Feedback now and there are still lots of good items up for auction. If you are still considering joining, now is the time as we need to all keep the site growing, if it has a chance against Ebay.

Please register and give it a try if you haven't already. I think you will agree, it's a great alternative to Ebay.

Thanks to all who have already registered. I know I sound like a broken record, but in order to keep it growing, we need to all spread the word and also list a few items whenever possible.

I wish you all luck with these business ventures, but if history has told us anything, it's hard as hell to break into eBay's marketshare, price-gouging and all.

In an effort to control shipping charges and methods we have added the following polices and standards:

http://www.chasethechuckwagon.com/html/shipping_policies.html

Also added is an advertising section that also featurs our button artwork, as many of you have asked to have access to our buttons for inclusion into your forum signatures, youtube profiles, and gaming websites.

http://www.chasethechuckwagon.com/html/advertising.html

We are also working slowly on adding a "Favorite Search" capability so you will receive an automated email when an item you are looking is listed. At that time, our Search by Zipcode feature will also be integrated. Should happen by years end, I hope.

Just an update on our current growth. We are now up to 473 members as of today since we launched on March 24th. And we have many of you DP'ers to thank.

Keep in mind that we are still offering an opportunity to buy in to the Chuckwagon's Lifetime Seller Membership. We have sold nearly 20 of these in the past month but have a few left up for sale on our home page.

To reiterate, all Lifetime Seller Members will be able to run completely free auctions for ever on the Chuckwagon. This means after you pay your $50 you will pay no listing, selling or listing enhancment fees ever. Exactly (3) Months To The Day ChaseTheChuckwagon.com Has Just Hit The 500 Member Mark Today June 24th, 2008.

I want to extend a warm thank you to all our inital 500 members for helping us attain this milestone in such short time. My goal is to have 2000 members on the Chuckwagon by March 24th, 2009 and so far we are right on track.

It will be up to us, the initial users to keep this Chuckwagon heading West by continuing to use the site whenever we are able and also promoting the site when and where appropriate to bring in more members. Please tell everyone you know who collects and plays games to Jump on the Chuckwagon Bandwagon.

I will continue to do as much as I can to promote the site in different areas and means to continue feeding it with new eyes and new traffic for our Seller community.

Thanks, again to everyone for making ChaseTheChuckwagon.com the fastest growing auction alternative for Gamers !

So Cal Mike

Just uploaded this weeks Auction Talk episode. Give it a listen to see what's happening on the fastest growing vid game auction site for classic and modern gamers:

http://www.chasingthechuckwagon.com/AuctionTalk.mp3

We have had tons of items get listed this week from all eras. Classic to modern. Should be something for everyone up there now.

Also, we have started a new contest where you could win $150 in Cold Hard CA$H.

You can read about this new contest here:

http://www.chasingthechuckwagon.com/upload/showthread.php?t=208

We are up to 597 members through tonight and so far we have hosted about 4,000 auctions and sold over $15,000 in goods since we launched on March 24th, 2008. This is cool, because this is $$ that would have been sold on Ebay

I hope you will consider selling your old and new items on the Chuckwagon. You have nothing to lose to try and will help continue to grow and make this a great option for gamers everywhere.

Thanks for the heads up! Downloading now.
FYI- no biggy but was just wondering if you knew, after listening to last few episodes at the end the audio file goes on in dead silence for some time then seems to play a little of the theme again before finally stopping. Just an observation, was wondering if this was something intentional or maybe unavoidable?

HA! This episode should fix that. I screwed up the edit in the last show or two.

Great idea, but I don't think the name is very good, it sounds very amateur.
Game Gavel is MUCH better name.

Great idea though, and I hope many people sign up.

The name has significant meaning with collectors in the USA. Thank you for your opinion, however :)

Definitely. Those who know the name, know it screams "COLLECTORS!!!"

And it does have a mom and pop cozy feeling to it!
