Unlike the Playstation, nearly all of the Saturn's games have audio and/or speech recorded in Redbook format CD-readable tracks. I've tested my collection, and found that among the U.S. releases I own, only Soviet Strike and Madden 97 didn't have Redbook audio. And I haven't actually played either of 'em, so I can't tell you if we're missing out (I picked them up because the boxes were in good shape). Among the JP releases, the deluxe packs seemed to only put the intro BGM on as a Redbook track, and a couple other shmups also didn't have Redbook.

NOTE FROM DP: Our member "Melf" created a very simple "how to" for burning your game CD's to music CD's. You can get that right here:

Daytona USA is probably your best bet here. I mean, who wouldn't want to listen to a Japanese guy (in all actually, the composer himself) sing in Engrish to a pop-rock tune? I mean, it's a winner on all fronts!

"DAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYEEEEEEETOOOOOOOOONAAAAAAA!"

I know with the ps1 that 2 games worked for sure:

N20 - Crystal Method s/t was pretty decent
Street Sk8er - I owe much of my love of music to this game and soundtrack (Less Than Jake, Pietasters, Plastilina Mosh, etc.)

The original Virtua Fighter is red book too, as is Thunder Force V.

Is "redbook" on ALL Saturn games you can listen to? I think I'm a little lost, I have NO idea as to what "redbook" is.

I know these can be listened to though, whether they are "redbook" or not is beyond me...

Scud: The Disposable Robot Assassin (which is pretty cool... weird 90s hippyhoppy and rock music and a pretty funny Answering Machine message. Loads up in WMP as the album "Anonymous" by Unbelieveable Jolly Machine :/ )

The Lost World: Jurrassic Park also plays as Music. Pretty nice Orchestral music.

IIRC, Fighters Megamix works. I loved the soundtrack for that one.

Dragon Force has a short goofy message as track 2, nothing else.

Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic R do not work I believe.

Whoa!

Let's not forget:

Earthworm Jim 2

God I love the soundtracks on both the saturn version of 2 and sega cd version of 1. Pure brilliance.

"Redbook" is basically standard CD audio.

Hey

I love the music from Astal and NiGHTS Into Dreams.

Track 13 on NiGHTS is super funky.

Off subject:

You can listen to Sega CD games' soundtracks on the PS2.

Try popping in Sewer shark and listening to the Digital pictures' Unused sound:

*Phone ring, or something to that effect - Like "Dingadingalingaling" *

Man:"Good afternoon, digital pictures"

Something: "EEE-YAD-RO-MUN. EE-YAD-RO-MAN. E-YAD-RO-MAN."

:hmm: LOL :eek 2:

Sonic R works. Love that cheese!

Saturn Bomberman works in the audio CD players as well. The track selection is pretty large too. But the crowning score is the western theme music on the very last track.

All the little annoying comments Bug makes in Bug! are Redbook. So there are 50-some tracks of "BUUUG JUICE!" and the like.

Soukyugurentai (original pressing, I don't know if the reissues is different) has about 50 tracks from older Raizing games (Mahou Daisakusen, Battle Garegga) on there. No in-game soundtrack, I believe.

Capcom Generation games take the cheap route out and have all the audio included as Redbook (the original arcade soundtracks plus some remixes).

The full soundtrack to Guardian Heroes is Redbook on the CD. This is a good sountrack (well, imo, anyway) and definitely worth popping into a CD player.

Most Working Designs games are like that. I think that's a warning about the disc's data damaging your speakers.

Hey guys--thanks for posting. But I'm going to hold off on adding your submissions until I can get something more definite than "if I recall correctly".

I hear ya that Astal's music is cool. But can you play it off the game CD in a standard CD player?

Ah, cool stuff, but PlayStation only! You wanted this thread:

Personally, I tend to pop in Grid Runner every once in a while. It is all sort of stereotypical early techno, but track 13 (I think it is 13...the Jungle-ish track) is a good listen. *shrug*

Astal does work, but only for one track and a voice sample. Believe me, I really wanted this game to play in CD players, but that single track is the only that can be read. The gorgeous background music of Astal can only be heard during gameplay (or on the options menu). :(

Body Special 264 is the same way. Only one track will play in CD players.

Speaking of short goofy messages, try listening to track 2 of Skies Of Arcadia, either disc (that is, if you can listen to it in a CD player, I'm not sure with GD-ROMs). Funny stuff.

Didn't see these so here are some more:

ThunderStrike 2 (shows up with 44 tracks, 1 being the data track)
Golden Axe: The Duel (25 tracks, track 1 data)

I'm also listening to the Sega Ralley Champ, and agree with the other people that it sounds good.

Tron 2.0

SamuraiShodown 3&4 Yes!
Kof 95,96,97 Yes!
Fatal Fury Real Bout and Special Yes!
MetalSlug Yes!
SS Rpg No :(
Castlevania Sotn No! Wich is a shame since it has extra remix's on it.

That's all i can think of at the moment.

Incidentally, can the redbook audio be ripped using something like Windows Media Player as you would transfer a normal music CD across? I quite fancy having a copy of the soundtrack from Daytona etc as part of my music library. :)

Melf

It sure can! That's how I make some quick mixed soundtracks. "Saturn's Best" is in my cd player A LOT. :)

You could always just go to SegaXtreme (http://www.segaxtreme.net/) and download the whole thing! :D

Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness is a fun CD to listen to for tracks 42 all the way to the last track.
