is it just me or does terrible hit detection make this game essentially unplayable? i just got it off ebay. I remember seeing this game in the magazines right when it came out and being intrigued. Well, I finally put it in this afternoon. The storyline blows and the dialogue is awful. Well, I can handle that. It's an early SNES game and that sort of thing is to be expected.

Then I started into the game. OK, you have to do a lot of repetitive monster slaying to build levels. OK, I can handle that...it's an old RPG, that's what they were often based upon.

What I did not expect was total ass hit detection. I have tried to beat the 2nd boss (blue dragon thing) like 20 times and cannot get more than half it's power off. The reason why is that the main character is completely sporadic. If you jump and attack, one of 3 things will happen:

1) The attack will actually work (rarely)
2) He will hit his head on some sort of imaginary field and not jump high/far enough to hit the blue dragon thing
3) He will jump high enough and swing his sword, but for some reason the attack does nothing.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I crazy? Or does this game just blow goats?

I found the game to be extremely easy, all except for the last boss that is, which is the case for almost all Ys games. I just remember getting to a high enough level where nothing would faze me, then I'd just go in and clobber every boss.

i just beat the boss...it takes a VERY precise jumping angle...otherwise your attack is completely useless. i will try to soldier on with this one...

Ys III is the black sheep of the Ys series. The PC Engine version is far superior to the SNES version, the music alone makes it worth it. And that's good, because I still find the character control to be pretty difficult to get used to. Either Ys III sucks all around, or I just don't know how to play it because I wind up dying in seconds.

I think you should play Ys Book I & II for the Turbo Duo if you haven't already, it's a fantastic game and it'll show you why Ys has such a loyal cult following. Or better yet, Ys I & II eternal for Windows.

YS III was supposed to be better on the SNES, with a better translation and the parallax scrolling removed, but the way that one enemy touches you and almost instantly kills you is a real downer. YS III on Genesis is somewhat playable, but the Turbo CD version is by far the best. The music is incredible, but as with all Turbo CD games, the voice acting is laughable.

The NES version has much better controls than the SNES one, in my opinion.

You should precise the Famicom version, since the game (like Ys 1&2) only came out on Japanese NES, the Famicom. :)

SNES version is by far the worst. It's only worth owning for Ys completists like me and even then I'd still play the Genesis and Turbo CD versions far more. The amount of experience enemies given in the SNES version is a little different too, making you have to grind more than any other version. It's not drastically different but it has more points where you basically hit a wall and HAVE to grind for a while.

It also somehow manages to have the most abrasive and inferior version of one of the best soundtracks in the series.

I have only played the Genesis version and I didn't have much trouble with it, except with the last boss which was a big pain. It felt really good when died.

How's the Sega Master System (or GG) editions?

Master System Ys I runs at a good speed and is just as fun as the others. Though keep in mind that without the awesome Ys II at its side it's a little on the short side. Like Metal Slug 3 the final area is almost as big as the entire game before it! :D

SMS Ys has one of my favorite Master System soundtracks too. I mean it's Ys music so of course it's great, but it's also impressive how much the "feel" of the songs are preserved in the Master System's bleeps and bloops.

I'm not aware of any Game Gear release though.

Go play the PC version with an internal speaker, then get back to me. :P

TG-16 version's got the hot tunes and cinematics for sure. But after years of debate, I admit that the only version that is actually a decent game is the Genesis/Megadrive version. That's the one to play.

I personally, prefer the color in the snes game to the genesis version, but as it was mentioned already, the snes version is the weakest version in every other aspect. I still ike it though :D
