View Full Version : Rumor: GameStop to dump all GB/GBC/GBA games in April.

I picked this rumor up at GameFAQs and ran it by my local GameStop.

Apparently, Gameboy and Gameboy Color games will be put on sale, 75% off is what I was quoted, starting in April. Some stores might also be dumping their stock of GBA games too.

All I know is I have three GameStops all within walking distance of each other, so I might make out like a bandit.

any word as to whether this applies to EBGames stores as well?

Here in Canada we don't have Gamestops, only EBGames.

I think they had better start dumping GameStops. I can think of six within a five mile area here.

But anyway... went dumpster diving at the older GameStops after hearing about them dumping older carts, but found nothing substantial. Justa few crappy sports games. I gave those to the local Goodwill.

But... that's fucking stupid. GBA games STILL SELL WELL.

Augh.

Not surprised to hear about the GB and GBC games, since I had a feeling that this would be the year that GameStop would stop carrying them. I'm wondering what's up with the GBA games, though.

Thanks for the heads up, I might make my best GB/GBC hauls since GameCrazy's classic plastic sales.

This is happening at an uncertain day in April, or like April 1st or something like that?

Is it just me or does the market seem to get more against collectors the more mainstream video games become?

Yet, the thought in the back of my mind is I can catch up on some of the portable gaming I missed out on.

Oh man, fuck that. It's not like they don't have room for them or anything. What's next? Only loose copies of the latest Madden and Call of Duty will be carried?

I heard something like this from one of the gamestops I frequent. He was telling me that they were going to get rid of them because of space limitations.

"Collectors" were never on the top of the list...ever...in any industry. They are few and far between and therefore don't provide enough profit. Even things like baseball cards, where collecting has more presence, aren't marketed to collectors. They're marketed to kids who want to pay $5 for a gamble that they'll get their favorite players.

That being said, the GB, GBC, and GBA games must really not be moving at these stores. It makes sense why Gamestops don't carry PS1 or Dreamcast. That takes up shelf space. But you can stock 100 handheld games in a shoebox. So this isn't a matter of "the extra space can be used for something more profitable." This must be a case of "Regardless of how little space is taken up, we're not making a dime."

Yes, but around where I live it's gotten to the point where employees tell me regularly I'm a moron for owning and liking classic games... To give you a feel I don't go into Gamestop/EBgames nor in Gamecrazy much anymore.

Then again it could be the Aurora, Illinois slum mentality... I can't tell anymore.

That's just a problem with those individuals then. Hell, I don't understand how people can prefer the sound of 8-track tapes but people do. I don't understand it but I won't belittle them for it. But even if I did understand it, even if I were one of them, there's no way in hell I'd run a business marketing directly to them.

i dont care why theyre doing this, but personnaly i cant wait. their prices for some of hte good gb/gbc games are ridiculous, and im pretty sure i already bought out all the normally priced ones. i know of around 10 gamestops i can easily visit that sell gb/gbc, the minute this sale hits, im skipping work and making my rounds. i already have around 100+ gb/gbc games, lets hope i double that >=]

Here's what I got :

April 7th, Gamestop will not trade-in GB and GBC games anymore. They will be holding the games and won't be throwing them out. (at least in my area.)
As for the sale, nothing is set in stone. I've heard talks of it, but will know more tomorrow.

SO I go further into debt...thanks Gamestop...I'm off early tomorrow so I'll check it out. Then I'll have to hit every Gamestop in town...

Any quick and easy game checklists anyone can point me too?

TX for the heads up.

Same here, there's one within this outside center, and two within one mall.

I'll have to stop by at one point, the one in the outside center has a ton of GB/C/A games. Hope there's still a discount sale.

Yup, Bubble bobble 2 is still 14.99. One gamestop has all the Mega man Game boy games, for like 19.99 a piece.

This is correct. GBA games wont be affected at all, just no more trades on GB and GBC. No word on a sale yet, will probably happen eventually though.

Yeah, there is one in each mall here (both malls being right next to each other) and one across the street from them in a different shopping center.

Hell, if I get a good haul, I might make the trip the huge GameStop in Modesto.

Maybe I'd be interested in this if GameStop actually kept their boxes and manuals. When it comes down to having just the cart, I might as well just throw the game on a flashcart and play it for free.

Just for the record, at my store we recieved a notice and a sign to put up saying that we will no longer accept original GB or GB Color games for trade-ins staring April 7th, but will still accept GBA. As far as I know, GBA isn't going anywhere for now, and I couldn't imagine it being eliminated until after the end of the DS' lifespan, what with backwards compatibility and all.

Haven't heard anything about a sale yet, but hopefully I can get some info on that soon.

From my friend, an employee at gamestop: GBA still accepted, officially, as of the last time he worked, GB and GBC are no longer accepted. As for a sale, he's heard nothing but will notify me asap, since we are both collectors, and some of them can have good stuff (One had the original Gameboy color Legend of Zelda :o for $2 :o I was broke DX)

i really dont mind no boxes/manuals. the gb/gbc is the *only* exception to my complete-only rule. that said, i have over 100 of them, i cant even imagine how much room id need if i had the boxes and stuff. i have about 70 complete gba games and storing them nicely is a real pain.

I don't recall seeing a GB or GBC game in the local EBGames for quite some time anyway. Even the selection of GBA games, while fairly extensive, tends to be decidedly lacking in A-list titles.

The one on Pelendale is alright but is of standard size for a standalone location. The one at Vintage Faire tends to have a better mix of inventory however. Neither are all that impressive - the biggest allocation of GB / GBC games I've seen at a GameStop in awhile is at the one in Oakridge Mall in San Jose. You can also visit that tiny horribly understocked indie store there as well - it's good for a laugh. I need to go in there sometime with about $1,000 and buy the store clean out. LOL

We have no good GameBoy games in Modesto, really. A lot of them, though. They just seem that they are over-priced. Just don't go to the one in the mall. It has literally no GameBoy games.

Are you sure? Cause the official final day is April 7th. :hmm:

As for the clearance, there is word there may be one within a few weeks of the final official day and will know for certain in a week or so. I'm really hope for 75% clearance sale with the additional 10% from my card, I'm going to going clean house! :D :D :D

Heck, even 50% is a great bargain pertaining Gamestop doesn't impose limitations like they did with their last sale. (25% off 3 used games at a time.)

Here in Canada we don't have Gamestops, only EBGames.

Here in Ottawa, we got a Gamestop in Place d'Orleans just four weeks ago... Thing is, there's already an EBGames shop on the other side of the (admittedly rather large) mall... I don't know what the corporation's thinking - the EBGames never seemed that busy to me...

Anyway, I went into the Gamestop last week and all the price tags on the used stock they were unboxing are Electronics Boutique tags?!? They must be getting this stuff from stores all over the region, but mostly all I've seen there so far is pretty common junk...

At any rate, it would appear that Gamestop has decided to follow their acquisition into Canada - I wonder what that means for the EBGames stores here now (if anything)...

Gameboy Color: Was the game that you bought discounted or did you buy it full price?

The GS in Clinton, NJ said that they have no plans of liquidating their current supply of Gameboy or Gameboy Color games. I haven't asked any of the other GS' around me but I assume the answer will be the same.

There are 2 gamestops in this mall down the street from me. One has ZERO GB/GBC games, but the other had about 50 random ones in the case. They were all in the back of the display thing, buried behind GBA and DS games by the plastic-wrapped bundle. Ridiculous. There were a couple I wanted, but I'm still under my self-imposed restriction on buying anything for myself, so I didn't grab them.

i get about the same thing at all game stops i go to, actually a few months back I stopped at one out out of town and I ask if they had any cart games. The answer I got was game boy stuff only and further in the conversation I found out the guy had never heard of a virtual boy and in his option a nes was a antique. Before I left he also asked me if I had a wii.

I just figured out why they are doing this. Apparently, Gamestop isn't selling GBA systems new anymore so I guess it doesn't make sense to sell GB and GBC games much longer. The Game Boy Player is also nearly useless (as far as Gamestop is concerned) since they don't sell new GameCube games.

Anyway, I've discovered a lot of games I've never known much about before due to this sale. For instance, I played the copy of Balloon Fight for GB I bought for $1.49 and it isn't anything like the NES version. Instead, it's like a platformer with same premise.

I'm going to keep hunting for good deals until this is over...

Amen to that brother, I've got a modest collection of Transformers and the prices blow me away sometimes. For instance (http://www.tfsource.com/Reissues/Encore-Skylynx/encore-skylynx.html), I can't understand paying almost $90 for a reissued $40 toy. This is your future, people. Some complain about Nintendo selling the same games over and over, but at least they're not totally ripping us off yet.
