I just picked one up today for $10. I was thinking one of two things:

Set it up as a makeshift arcade machine hooked up to a modded Xbox

Set it up on it's own TV stand and use it to play all my old game systems on

I love those monitors. They're great for NES.

If it's a 1084, you should box it up and send to me :)

I've considered making a mini-cab with my 1902. The nice thing about those old monitors is that the old chroma/luma inputs accept s-video signals.

Is there an adapter that will allow you to do that?

Yup. I would love to make mine a mini cab

Sort of. I have an adapter cable that was made for some type of audio receiver that has a male DIN connector on one end, and two female RCA jacks on the other. The color code doesn't match what's on the monitor, but it does the trick. Ideally, I'd want one that has male RCA jacks and a female DIN connector, but I'd have to make that myself.

What makes them better than a regular television?

What makes them better than a regular television?

I can't speak technically but in my simple terms......

Very vibrant, bright and detailed, very sharp display. No comparison
to a Television, even though I had a new 21' RCA TV I would use my
little 14' Commodore monitor to view games and movies, it was just
that good, for example if you were to display 2 shades of red that
were only slightly different you could not tell the difference on the TV
but it was obvious on the monitor, I could just notice detail I could not on
a TV, I guess it's like comparing standard def to high def today............

The 1702 is a good one because it has all the great picture quality of a 1084 but also has stereo sound. I have one, but one of the speakers is buzzy and needs to be fixed :(.

Mine just fried. I mean there was smoke coming out of the back. It was really depressing.

I'm going to have to check that out. Judging by some of the comments in this thread, the 1702 and 1084 have the best picture?

So to does the 1084S!

No... Are you sure it's a 1702? 1084S is stereo, all the 1702's I've had were mono. And 1701's.

The 1702 is a nice monitor. It's made by JVC and was used as a professional video display (for video editing).

Second place is the original 1902/1080. Those do composite, Y/C, digital and analog RGB so they are very flexible and have almost as good a picture as the 1702. These can be spotted by the flat convex bezel that follows the curve of the tube in the front. Some of the early 1080's have "AMIGA" in the original rainbow color logo in the lower left.

The rest of the CBM monitors were a crap shoot. Made by different manufacturers at different times, most are junk Magnavox or Phillips designs that were given to the cheapest bidder at the time. You can't tell by the model numbers.

For ever since I've visited a certain local thrift store they've had a 1084 monitor sitting on a top shelf in the electronics section. It has a feed shown from some cameras in the store and has a sign "NOT FOR SALE" on it.

But anyhow, +1 to be used as a classic gaming tube.

You know, I just don't understand why so many Phillips products are absolute garbage. For a company who makes moderately expensive medical equipment, they sure have a lot invested in the total shit market.

Here's an idea......why not hook a Commodore 64 up to it?

You're right. It's a 1084S. My mistake. :embarrassed:

(sigh) Back in the late 90's at the Goodwill I used to haunt they called me "The Commodore Kid", but you'd never believe that now.

This is probably the last thing I would do with an old Commodore monitor. Not that the quality wouldn't be good, but it's too small for a full-size MAME cabinet. Use a 19/25" TV for that, and give that monitor the true Commodore lovin' it deserves!

Those Midway cabinets had monitors about the same size.
