Did anyone else pickup the Bonus DVD with the Metal Gear Solid Online Beta code? Ijust got mines today I can not wait to plya MGS Online. I am definitely joining the hype wagon on this one. There is no way Kojima would make an awesome game and a terrible online for MGS4. I got mines in Clifton, NJ Gamestop on Route 3. Just pre-order the Limited Edition $84.99 for $10 down and you get it. I am going to redeem my beta tonight. LONG LIVE MGS!

I'm really torn at the moment on this subject. I do not have a PS3 but am starting to really want one for GTA 4 and especially MGS4. Lucky for me they are offering what appears to be a fantastic bundle with an 80GB ps3 MGS4 and dual shock 3 for 500 bucks. If I'm not mistaken the 80GB PS3 was selling for that without MGS4 and the old six-axis (even if it's discontinued)

Anyway I would have purchased the limited edition if I already had a PS3 but now I'm wondering if I get a PS3 a little early I can get the limited edition, an invite to the beta, and play GTA4 when it comes out instead of a few weeks later. I would be getting a 40GB without any backwards compatibility. The 80GB at least has software emulation and for what it's worth an extra 40GBs of space. It seems silly to get it before hand and sacrifice the rest for basically a beta and a more expensive copy of the same game.

Any thoughts?

what the hell, I preordered mine last week and they didn't give me shit! I'm going in there and causing a scene next time. That would be cool if I can just show them the receipt for it so I won't have to yell at anybody. Actually I wouldn't yell at anybody at all, I'd just go ask them to get me that stuff.

Yeah what sucks is lets say your part of a pre-order of 50 people....the GS could only maybe get 20 copies of the limited edition disc, so automatically 30 people are arsed out of the gift...I mean seriously ONLINE BETA FOR MGS!

Anyway speaking to my GS they said ALL GS should have the bonus DVD with Beta Today and tomorrow.

Also Youtube video of the disc and some content coming up in jiffy

I just got it at the East Brunswick, NJ Gamestop in the Midstate Mall. It was the old Funcoland, not the Gamestop that was there years ago and still has the old Gamestop sign.

I haven't seen the last trailer on the disc yet. I watched up to the part where you get to see Naomi's cleavage. Is this the spoilerrific trailer I've heard so much about? I won't watch it if it is.

Is this beta disc just for pre-ordering the huge mega-special edition of MGS4? Or can you get one for pre-ordering the regular $59.99 edition? Gamestop.com isn't very clear.

I called my gamestop and they told me that they should be calling the people who preordered the game to pick up the bonus stuff because it won't come in till next week sometime. I'll have to check back on that because you never really know if they are gonna follow through on some things or not.

I picked up the bonus DVD/beta access at my local Gamestop today with a $5 pre-order of the regular $59.99 version of MGS4.

Ok, I have preordered online but wanst sure which bonus I get, so I just put down $5 at a GameCrazy here and got the DVD. Funny thing is, the 2 guys working there made me laugh. One is talking to a customer saying how he cant wait for whats after 360 and the PS3 cause their graphics are starting to look dated! He says he can't even LOOK at a PS2 game cause it "looks like something from the early 90's". That was from random idiot employee #1.

Random idiot employee #2 (the one who rang up my dvd) said 2 things that made me sigh: First, he said they cancelled the MGS4 LE bundle. He said there wasn't a big enough demand for it *sigh* I might be wrong, but is the LE a Gamestop exclusive? If it is, I can see how brain washed he is for working there and tried to convince me to not shop anywhere else for the game (he and the other guy even said at one that GC was the ONLY place to buy games since they know EVERYTHING!).

Second thing he said was, and I quote, "This dvd (MGS Saga Vol. 2) is only available at Gamecrazy. The other guy chimes in saying "Thats what makes us the best!" *sigh* As he said these things, I already knew people who got the disc at Gamestop. *sigh* I didnt argue, ridicule him, laugh at him, etc. I just wanted my damn DVD and to never step in there again......

I got the dvd at the gamestop I preordered my LE at, but the guy gave me one that was off of the spindle. I drove to another gamestop and preordered a regular edition to get another disc that was not scratched up (nice big scratch on my first disc).

I gave it a watch and found it extremely informative and entertaining.

While it held my attention because it was MGS related, I didn't think it was informative. I don't think I learned anything new from it, except for the fact there was this mysterious person narrating it. (anyone know or have any ideas who it is?) It was very brief, and while it seemed aimed at those unfamiliar with the series, it glossed over some things so much that it would give a completely bogus impression to those unfamiliar with the game as to how some events happened. I don't want it to seem like I am complaining though, as I don't think anything better could be done with a story as intricate as this series'.

Got mine today.

I don't think it was as good as the Metal Gear Saga Volume 1 DVD that came with the MGS 3 Subsistence pre-order, but it DOES come with the online beta code which is nice.

I tried putting my code in, but it said it wasn't valid.

I guess it's not active until the beginning of the beta download period listed on the paper begins.

I've been thinking about the beta with some amusement, now. I never thought I'd see the day where I could be called a "*!#$*" noob" by a racist 13 year old in idaho while playing a Metal Gear Solid game. That'll be new.

My MG Saga Vol. 2 disc came with a 9-digit Beta Voucher, which comes up as "The code you have entered is not valid..."

I see on the Konami forums, and the Playstation forums that this is happening to a lot of people with a 9 digit code ending with E.

I emailed Konami support, hopefully they can get me a replacement voucher code ... if not looks like I'll have to wait for the commercial release of the game, which would suck because I HATE putting a reservation on a game that I know won't NEED one, but the Beta entry was a nice enticement.

Anybody else have a 9 digit voucher code that's not working??

The 9 digit codes were mistakes, they are supposed to be 12, here's the email Konami was sending out:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for contacting Konami Support. If your code is appearing with only 9 or 11 digits, then this is incorrect.

Please copy your code exactly as it appears on your voucher in your reply to this email. We’re very sorry for this inconvenience and we will do our best to rectify the situation in time for the Beta start.

Thanks for the info. I forwarded the email I had sent to the MGSOBeta support to the email you listed.

Hopefully they deal with this promptly.

Not the biggest deal in the world if they don't ... as I was never very good at the Subsistence online game ... but it's a MAJOR screw-up nonetheless.

I got a 12 digit code. Sweet!

Except for this whole downloading the 1.01 patch thing. It's taking for-freaking-ever! I'll have to leave my PS3 on overnight...

They really should've included the virtual firing range in the beta, or at least a stripped down version of it. It would've been the perfect way to hold us over until Monday, and we would be able to hone our skills over the weekend.

I was downloading at 40kb/sec this morning, but I turned my PS3 off before I went to work because I didn't want it on all day. It was already on all night. I'm trying again, and thankfully it won't delete what you've already downloaded. It's been on for over an hour, though, and it barely creeped from 79% to 81%, and now it's back to 0kb/sec. :(

Frankie_Says_Relax

I have NEVER seen a beta test run so absolutely GOD AWFUL in it's first week.

Okay ... so I got a 9 digit code. Konami sent me a replacement after 4 emails and 48 hours.

Fixed.

The game downloaded much quicker than other people reported it to ... less than an hour for both the main data and the update on my PS3.

HOWEVER, the Konami ID site ... is. completely. broken.

as of 4/19 2:48AM It won't let you register ANY email addresses. It tells you that whatever you put in is "already registered" with Konami, and when you try to "retrieve" a password from the same email address that is allegedly already registered ...

IT TELLS YOU THAT THAT EMAIL ADDRESS IS NOT REGISTERED!

Holy crap this is just one freaking problem after another...

...imagine if they just went to retail on this with no public beta?

Konami didn't just drop the ball on this one ... they tripped on the ball fell down some stairs and broke their neck.

I haven't been able to get the 1.01 patch yet - I have no interest in leaving my machine on for 24hrs to try and get it. When the servers go live (hopefully at midnight), I'm hoping things will work a lot more quickly. I'm going to try again really early tomorrow morning before work to get the patch so I'll be good to go when I get home.

After about three hours, the 750 MB Beta downloaded. I tried getting the patch through peer-to-peer, that was a mistake. Now I'm downloading the 1.01 patch by HTTP. In the past 5 minutes it has gone to 3% - not too bad. I have a feeling by the time it goes live or shortly thereafter, there will be 1.02 ready.

EDIT - it has failed twice now (though it saved what has already been downloaded. I'm not sure if it it my network, or Sony/Konami. I guess I'll try later.

On the eve of its debut, the Metal Gear Online (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-online) US public beta has gone AWOL. More accurately, Konami has announced that the beta has been delayed due to "extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe" causing service problems.

Konami did not give a new starting date for the beta, only to say that more information will be coming tomorrow, April 22. The end date, however, has been pushed back from May 5 to May 11. (Update: fixed date.) For those who need a fix desperately can peep the online manual (http://www.konami.jp/mgo/us/manual/manual.php) for the game, including a listing of the 16 skills (http://www.konami.jp/mgo/us/manual/manual.php?env_sessionID=8&sid=&keystr=&host=) you can choose from to enhance your stealth killer.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

My impression after a few matches are that it's following in form with the MGS3 Subsistence online game, as well as the PSP MGS Portable Ops online games.

Very polished, very tight, very "advanced" online combat strategy games ... and, for what it is I do think it's very cool ... but I have the same criticism of this version that I do of all the others - they're just too damned "stiff".

I'll take Warhawk over this any day of the week for it's wonderfully balanced running/jumping/climbing/shooting mechanics vs. the MGS Online family of games "plays with controls just like Metal Gear Solid ... but online with a bunch of other people" mechanic.

I'm often killed just switching weapons or performing some other control option in the MGS Online games rather than by any tactical error I make or lack of skill I have.

It's pretty fun - but I'm not adept enough at it (or these types of games in general for that matter) to feel like I'm actually accomplishing more than just running around blasting off bullets. I've been smoked by knife wielders at least 3 times trying to fight CQB style - there must be a way to quick-transition between a firearm and the knife that I haven't figured out yet.

The graphics look great, and I haven't noticed ANY lagging or bugs whatsoever. It's really slick.

Don't feel bad ... I played MGS3 Subsistence online for the better part of a year and I NEVER felt "adept" at it ... and I consider myself to be an expert Metal Gear player.

I really think that it's a GREAT idea to take the MGS universe online in a multiplayer game, but the play control will never lend itself to being "smooth" in that environment.

It's a control scheme that wasn't made for fast paced "deathmatches" ... it was made for slow-paced "stealth" and made to be used against computer AI.

Still, I do find myself enjoying this iteration of the series ... even if I have fundamental issues with the game itself.

Frankie_Says_Relax
04-26-2008, 01:22 AM
Also ... I find it HYSTERICAL that you not only need to make a Konami ID, and a Konami Game ID ...

... but once you make it into the ACTUAL MGS Online Beta that you have to make YET ANOTHER "Player ID"!

That's a total of THREE registered "screen names" for one title.

jjreason
04-26-2008, 08:49 AM
Yeah, a little time consuming to be sure. I enjoyed making my character though (my son sat with me and both "freaked" when we saw your "dude" could have a "ninja mask" LOL).

I found the auto-login feature didn't work. I had to enter my first ID the second time I logged in as well. I purposefully used the save ID/password option because I was so worried about getting all 3 of the damned things confused. :beaten:

Anyhow, if it hasn't saved my stuff next time I'll include that in my report to them as a possible needed fix.

It's a control scheme that wasn't made for fast paced "deathmatches" ... it was made for slow-paced "stealth" and made to be used against computer AI.

...that pretty much nails it. MGS is not well suited for online deathmatch-style gameplay. Obviously, a lot of work went into making MGO. It looks like a very polished game so far. Unfortunately, the end result is boring, stiff, and just plain not fun.

If people like the idea of a multiplayer stealth game, great. I'm sure they'll love MGO. For people (like me) who are used to things a little more action oriented (i.e. FPS's), you will come away a bit disappointed. Multiplayer has evolved since the days of MGS3. I don't think the Japanese have noticed yet.
