View Full Version : Help me out with Dreamcast VGA
Well, I have being browsing eBay for VGA adapter to play DC games in a PC monitor. I came across these models, the first one seems to be the "standard" one, the second one talks about Hi-Res graphics, which one should I choose?

VGA is VGA... however, these are both 3rd party. Never used either. I go 1st party where I can.

I know, but the official one is very rare and pretty expensive, I just want to play some games on my monitor because I scarcely use the TV and want it out of my room.
so, do you think the second one is better, or they just throw in the "high res" thing for hyping the VGA?

I highly doubt one is better than the other. It's not rocket science, afterall. :)

I've got the first one. Works quite well with my HP LCD and on my TV.

My friend has the first one and it works fine; I have a Naki brand one and it also works fine.
The second model you pictured was the first one I bought- didn't work at all! Stay far away!

the first one looks to be of superior construction just from those pictures, i forget which one i have its translucent orange but it works pretty well.

I have the first one. It does a good job with VGA. My biggest complaint about it is that the S-video jack is recessed into the shell and my good S-video cable wouldn't fit into it.

Best thing to do is take out the screws and open it up. I just got the same adapter and went through the same learning process in the last few days....
Though after I experienced Dreamcast in VGA, I put my DC with my PC and never looked back at s-video... incompatible games be damned (they are few and niche).

I own the first one. Haven't tried it yet since I don't actually have a VGA (or SVID!) cable. I plan to get one though since I own two lcds I could use it on.

The one I have isn't a "box" and doesn't have all those ports on it. It just plugs into the DC at one end and plugs into a VGA port at the other end. Works fine for me. From what I can gather, it doesn't really matter which VGA thingy you use. Except that there's that one that has a passthrough port, but it's pretty rare/expensive.
Thanks, guys! I have one more question: can I use light gun/fishing rod with a PC monitor?

Fishing rod yes, but not the light gun.

How big of a difference will i see if i convert to using VGA?
I'm thinking about hooking it up to my PC monitor because I just learned that I can connect to the net through my PC (though I don't really know how, I just know I can) so it would be convenient to have everything close to each other.

A big difference indeed. Very big jump from S-video. Once you go VGA with your dreamcast, there is no turning back. Incompatible with some games, just a few.

You will see an amazing difference. I got my VGA box a week ago, and it's impressing the hell out of me in 2008! (thanks racketboy) This is still high tech gaming!
Funny you should mention your PC, because what's going through my head, these days, is the notion that the DC + PC are a wonderful combination. The VGA monitor is beautiful for sitting right up close and playing arcade-style games. Dreamcast has perfect ports of Naomi arcade games... and for everything else there's your PC with emulation. Couple it with joysticks that work on both DC and PC (I'd go for PlayStation interface with adapters), and a KVM switch that can toggle between VGA and audio sources, and you have an excellent setup for playing arcade, PC and Dreamcast games... kind of a MAME cabinet without the spectacle and more PC function.
Who says everything has to be put in a home theater? DC belongs in a PC-style setup. I mean... the thing has typing games :D (you can actually get PS/2 > DC keyboard adapters so you only have to keep your PC keyboard around... but I digress)
A picture says 1000 words (ironically my PC is dead right now... :( I need to fix it soon.)

Here's another Dreamcast VGA setup I found while googling. Whoever this is has the right idea ;)

I've read about the Performance VGA, which can switch between PC Monitos/DC mode without unplugging anything, does anyone know where can I get one of those?
