this has probably been discussed before, but i was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with finding a copy of this game that actually works... i've been through half a dozen copies, and have yet to come across one that will actually play in my dreamcast. what's the deal with this? some kind of manufacturing defect?
thanks
mike

I never had a problem with my original copy of SA until it got scratched beyond repair by my (then) 2-yr old.
I bought a new copy , which looks fine (no scratches) -- this is the Greatest Hits version. I noticed right away that Sega had added a water effect to the "Sonic Adventure" title screen. Anyway, the game locks up all the time!
So, you can't get any copy to boot at all? I had that problem with Phantasy Star Online -- my original DC would NOT boot the game, and I tried several copies.

I have a not-for-resale international version that came with the Sonic DC pack. Never had any problems with it. It too has the water ripple effect for the menu/title screen.

it loads the dreamcast screen (which is run from the hardware if i'm not mistaken... right?) but then hangs on that screen, and refuses to do anything else... maybe it's the version dreamcast i have (are there different verions)?

It's a problem with your DC, no your copy of the game. Some DCs, for whatever reason, just don't seem to want to play Sonic Adv. My DC plays my copy of sonic adventure perfectly, but my best friend has tried three copies (including mine) and none of them work in his DC.

This may not make sense to you, but have you tried boiling the disk for about 5-10 seconds?
I do not know what that does (clears out gunk from the disc tracks?) but it has 'fixed' many non-booting discs for me on Dreamcast. I repeat, I have taken several Dreamcast games, both used and new, also the ODCM demo discs, which didn't boot -- and I've boiled them and gotten them to work. Proof is in the pudding, and it doesn't hurt to try it.
If its a problem with your DC not reading Sonic Adv, it won't help of course -- and as I said above, my DC wouldn't boot any of 3 different PSO's I tried. They were all brand new too.

I think it's the game, and it won't work on any DC. It was a huge problem at launch, a bunch of games (they were all pressed at the same plant or something) wouldn't work at all. Some games like MK Gold were repressed with a seal on the cover saying that they were new.
I bought a DC and Sonic Adventure on launch day. The game wouldn't load, so I took it back to E.B. My friend who worked there said they'd been inundated by the same complaint all day. He started opening up Sonics and testing them on the store's DC. He went through half a dozen before he found one that worked, and exchanged it for mine.

I had the same experience as you 123forever and Perkar. Never ot one that worked until I got a Limited Edition version.

Just this week,I found a strange looking sonic adventure case that had one side with sonic adventure 1 picture and the other side with a sonic adventure 2 picture.Immedittly,I knew it was a fake.Didn't buy it though because I already owned the game when it first came out in the first place.

so it's a bad pressing? this may explain it... will the 'sega all-stars' version of the game be (more or less) gauraunteed to work?

Whether this works or not I thought just asking if he'd tried it was funny as hell. LOL
Gee, no I didn't try boiling my games. What was I thinking?

Actually, I've also seen this boiling thing work. Wasn't my disc, but a buddy of mine got his "dead" Soul Calibur running smoothly with a little love in the kitchen. He wasn't happy when I added some seasonings to the boiling pot, but perhaps that actually helped.
I've been told that the disc boiling method also works for copy protection on DVDs or something related to that. I won't try to pass off something I heard second hand as fact, so take it for what you will. Discs like a sprinkling of basil, though. That much I know.

==> Evidently you have never heard of it either then, but it was a much-publicized technique to get DC games & demos working over the past 3 years. I was skeptical at first (thinking "eh? How could boiling do anything?"), but seeing was believing.

Reminds me... Does anyone have a COMPLETE Limited Edition available?
Boiling huh... Doesn't take the ink off I assume?

If Cafeman says it, then it's so. He really knows his stuff.
*listens as various cauldrons begin to boil with DC games. And basil ;) *

Erm, just to clarify -- boil it for about 5-10 seconds, label UP. That worked for me.
For example , I bought Bomberman Generations new -- didn't boot. Boiled it 5 seconds or so -- works fine. Why? Dunno!
If the boiling fails to get the game to work, return the GDROM to the pot and THEN add the basil. :D

so a little follow up here...
i haven't tried boiling the game yet, but it may get to that point yet.
my friend actually just bought a dreamcast, so naturally, i take over my sonic adventure to see if it works... it does. so it mustbe something with my console having problems with the disk. doesn't make me too happy... but oh well. maybe i'll try getting an 'all-stars' version.
