Should change the title of the post to the CE and it's contents, you could have preordered Fallout 3 for months at Gamestop now ;)
That CE is amazing, and THAT is how you do a Collector's Edition... this makes the MGS 4 one look horrible, imo, because everything in it will be ripped to the net in no time.
You can't rip a Vault Boy bobblehead.

That's a sweet CE. A metal lunch box? Hell yeah.
I can't wait for this game. It's really the only game I'm looking forward to right now. The only thing that has me a little worried is that I read it will be about a 20 hour game. That definitely doesn't sound like the post-apocolyptic Oblivion I was hoping for.

Well fuck I had never bought a SE/CE before until I pre-ordered the GTA IV SE a week ago now it looks like I'm getting two this year seeing as how Fallout 2 is my favorite game of all time and I can't wait for this game.

Well I know it's your opinion but I can't even say how wrong you are about the MGS 4 Collectors Edition which looks amazing but I really am excited for Fallout 3 and I will be buying this collectors edition.
It's definitely unique for the Lunch Box, October can't come soon enough.

Can anyone tell me how this game will play? I've watched lots of videos but they don't answer my questions.
1. Do you have a mission list like in Oblivion where you can have lots of missions going at once and you can choose which you want to do first?
2. Are there towns with people, things to buy, new missions to get, etc.
3. Will you get lots of different weapons as you go through the game? (like keep getting better versions of the shotgun you already have).
4. Will the map be large?
5. Can you fast travel around the map to different towns?
I thought this would be Oblivion with guns and set in a city wasteland and that's why I was so excited about it. What I'm not wanting from Fallout 3 is for it to be linear with nothing to buy and very few new weapons or weapon upgrades. Yeah, sure you can get a rifle, shotgun, fatman, and more but I want them to be very upgradeable or to get new versions.

1. Don't know, but I would count on it. You'll definitely have multiple quests at once and I can't think of a better way to keep track of them.
2. Yessir.
3. Yes ma'am (covering all bases here)
4. Uh, yeah
5. Good question. At first I hated the idea for Oblivion but it turned out to be really useful. I only used it maybe 2% of the time I needed to go somewhere, but it was nice having the option.
Don't count on this being Oblivion with guns though (you're in the minority there). They are (reportedly) going to great lengths to make this a Fallout game. You might be able to play through it Oblivion-style, but I think you'd be missing a lot of the point of the game, and thus, not enjoying it.

Thanks for replying. Everything sounds great but what did you mean by the part I bolded? I've never played a Fallout game (maybe I'm an idiot?) so could you explain that in more detail?

Actually braved the local GameStop to pre-order this ex-swag-aganza a few months back, then made a quick escape before my wallet started bleeding.

I think he means you could keep everything real time (like Oblivion), or could use the hmm was it RTS, the combat system where you pause it to select where you want to target an opponent.
From there it gives % of chance to hit various body parts. I always liked to aim for the eyes or the groin :)

It will have both real time combat and VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) "pause and aim" options on the fly.

Ah, I knew about VATS but I thought he was talking about the way you do the missions or......I don't know.

Yeah that's kind of what I meant. Basically Fallout is much more tactical than the Elder Scrolls games. It seems that you can kind of run and gun your way through this one, but you won't really be getting a Fallout experience. Fallout 2 (the only one I've played) also made items fairly hard to come by (it was more realistic in that regard), so if you went into every fight with your guns blazing I think you'd run dry pretty quick.
You should try to play one of the older games before 3 comes out. I think there is a "battle chest" of sorts that has 1 and 2 and Tactics for like $20. I've heard Tactics is so-so, 1 is great, but 2 is pure gold. For me it's very difficult gold (I've never finished), but still gold nonetheless.

I'll think about it but I doubt I will buy it. I have a hard time getting into playing games using a mouse and keyboard.
I do plan on using VATS since I don't like FPS that much.....and because I love Vagrant Story's battle system.

Yep VATS is what I meant. Yeah I'm really excited about this game. I've always been into RPG's but its the post nuclear stuff that really gets me going.
The only thing that scares me about this game, I've been reading bits and pieces of reviews first looks etc. I remember one of them talking about how they really had to wander around for a few minutes before they even had an encounter.
Dunno just worried it's going to be too sparse.
I never did beat Fallout, 2 or Tactics although I did make it the farthest in Tactics. From what I remember that was an awesome game, so for it not being the "best" of the series it's still definetly worth checking out.
I need to go back and play Wasteland and Fountain of Dreams again :)

When I first started playing Oblivion I walked for probably four minutes before finding an enemy. Once I started leveling up though the encounters became much more frequent. I wouldn't be surprised if Bethesda used a similar mechanic here. Also, with the amount of travel you're doing I would think frequent encounters would get quite old and also seem unrealistic. I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah I'm sure it will be amazing regardless, an apocolyptic Washington DC = yummy. Even without encounters!
I preordered two myself, one 360 one PC. Sad not a lot of loving for my PS3.

Out of curiosity, why would anyone need more than one copy? I'll admit to buying multiple copies of some of my favorite games (Morrowind, Diablo 2), but not when they're new. What's the draw?

i got 2 copies at gamestop (One for pc one for xbox) cause i wanted the extra bobble heads (one for work one for home). also i intend on playing hte pc version.
then when the super special edition came out on amazon, i got that one. ill most likely get rid of 1 or 2 of these and just save the one pc copy i intend to play. personally i just want the bonuses =P

Yep Gamestop one and a super Amazon one. I'll play the 360 one at home and get achievments etc. The PC one I'll be able to play at work on my laptop.
Normally I don't buy multiple copies of a game. Lately I haven't even been buying new games (get em used). This is a title I definetly have to support.

There are 4 new gameplay videos (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/901/901269/vids_1.html) on IGN.
These really helped my decision, I'm getting it! It's nice to hear some of the Oblivion voice actors return in this game.
It's also good to see that they have a lot of beards to choose from, that's something I really wanted in Oblivion, all I could do was give the character a little bit of dark blue fuzz.

Actually, there are five. I'm not sure why the other isn't showing up there. And I agree, these videos really sold me as well (as if I wasn't already).

I've never played any of the Fallout games, it seems interesting though. What type of gameplay is it and how does it go about it? (yes, serious questions) I'm curious about it due to the hype I see, and from the awesomeness of the Collectors edition.

First of all prior Fallout experience is not required for Fallout 3. This game has a totally different design purpose and play style than previous Fallouts. The story and setting are both well after Fallout 2 and take place in a whole new part of America.
From what I've seen Fallout 3 is basically a hybrid first person shooter/RPG. If you've played Deus Ex (shame on you if you haven't) then you'll have a decent idea of what to expect. Combine that with a Morrowind/Oblivion style open world where you can go where ever you want, when you want and you'll have Fallout 3.
Of course according to Bethesda if you're at a lower level some areas will just end up with you being obliterated (like Morrowind) so you'll have to be picky about where you wander early on.

After looking at those I'm impressed with what they're doing. I won't have the time to play this game around launch so I'll have to hold out until sometime next spring. I'm currently balancing time playing Painkiller Overdose, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Battlefield 2, Prey, and Unreal III. It's a slow process and with classes + work it's even more rough finding time now.

I hear ya...thats the reason I didn't finish the game. I spendt 40 hours on side quests before starting the main game, so the enemies in the main game portion were freakin impossible!

Oblivion has a difficulty slider. It can be applied for any enemy at any time.
