I just had an idea for the DPers out there to help other DPers. Create a map of retro gaming stores for people to look at so if you are traveling/moving you know where to go. I started it here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&om=1&msa=0&msid=117176970323808981783.00044aafb9c7cea768d23&z=9

If you would like to contribute to the cause let me know and I can add you to the list. I just started myself and will cover stores in my neck of the woods, but would love to dot the US with some help.

Outside of the DP store, I only know of one other in my area. It's called Fun N Games in Pompton Lakes, NJ. It's a nice mom & pop operation. Small and very cramped but the family that owns it is friendly.

Fun N Games
239 Wanaque Ave
Pompton Lakes, NJ 07442

On a scale of 1-5 I'd rate it a 4. It has a surprising amount of merchandise for a store with so little floor space and the prices are fair. They deal in a lot of vintage toys and cards but the video games seem to be the primary focus.

That's a great idea! Is it going to include thrift stores/pawn shops, flea markets and other stuff like that? Or are you sticking to gaming stores only? Not saying you should do either, just wondering what you're gonna do.

Why not? I don't know how to do different color pins on this yet but shouldn't be too hard. If you want to submit a place I need an address, a phone number, a URL (if they have it), a mini Description, and a rate. It is open for input so plug away!

Ah, great idea but, there's that small handful DP'ers who would rather die than reveal the location of their "secret goldmine".

I can think of two right off the bat.

You may want to check out www.stopgamestop.com as they have a lot of locations under their "alternatives" tab. For example, I submitted a bunch of Virginia (http://www.stopgamestop.com/alternatives/view.php?state=VA) stores.

I've been to Video Games New York a few times (formerly St. Marks Games). The classic game selection there seems to be pretty good. I traded in several loose N64 games and saw someone trading in a boxed Atari Lynx. Current games are available as well.

For all of those in or near the Delaware area, Play n' Trade store in Middletown. Great place to be, they even allow to playtest all their games (classic and recent). To top it off, when you buy 2 used games, you get the 3rd forFREE! \\^_^/\\^_^/\\^_^/

Video Nutz
2919 Route 206 Ste 311
Columbus, NJ 08022
Phone: (609) 265-2551

It's located at the Columbus Flea Market but is one of the permanent indoor shops at the market. They have a a lot of old mainstream stuff like the NES SNES and Master System but they don't have anything older than the NES really. Maybe the occasional Atari. They also have a bunch of new stuff as well. 3/5

They are open :
Thursday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
Friday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
Saturday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm
Sunday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

Play N Trade (http://www.playntrade.com/) - a recent chain that not only offers selection and prices competitive with GameStop, but carries a decent retro selection as well. Last time I was at my local franchise store, they had a big cardboard box of $5 NES games, cool stuff too. Magic Kingdom Adventures, Hydlide, etc.

The Game Trader (http://thegametrader.webpossystem.com/) - These guys used to have a store in my local mall, but it closed after maybe a year. It was great while it lasted, they're the only true retro game shop I've ever found locally.

There's my contribution to the list. Both sites have a Store Locations page.

I have loads of time but im not sure exactly how to do it..

If you can't get it to work (some people are having this issue if they do not have an account with google) then post it here and I can do it. Otherwise search for the "Retro Game Shops" in google maps, add it to your map section. Then search for an adress, and then click on "Add to My Maps" select the map on the drop down and it will be added, fill in other info before saving it.

Alright, updated with all the sites listed except Play n Trade (I can do that one later once I find an easy to read listing of all the stores). Anyway if someone out there wants to help me out in managing all the addressed and info I could use the help, I have been updating for about 3 hours now and another hand will make things go smoother. Thanks and keep the info coming.

Here are three more:

Fair Game
9121 Kiefer Blvd # A
Sacramento, CA 95826

Fair Game
8214 Fair Oaks Blvd
Carmichael, CA 95608

(These guys carry a lot of stuff NES and newer. Their consoles tend to be overpriced, but you can find some good deals on games, though those are also sometimes overpriced. They generally have a pretty good selection. The second place carries a much better variety, with Sega CD and Saturn games, plus less mainstream stuff and some Atari games. The rarest games I've found there are Action 52 and Chase the Chuck Wagon, though they usually have a very good Saturn selection. Worth checking out.)

4 Jays Video Games
519 W 4th St
Antioch, CA 94509

(I've only been here once, but they had a pretty dang good selection. They have a lot of consoles, as well, but you might have to call them beforehand so that they can pull what you want out of the warehouse. Prices are much more reasonable than I'd expected, and in general better than Fair Game. They had a pretty good selection of CIB games, including several from Mystique, if you're into that sort of thing. If only the store wasn't an hour away from where I live. They do do mail orders, though, and I just discovered they have an eBay store when I was looking for Sega CDXs.)

Ah, what a wonderful resource this will be! Allow me to add my local stores to this fine list.

Gamers Extreme
57 S. Broadview, Ste. 104
Greenbrier, AR 72058
[A new store, less than a week old, so final judgement is withheld for now. Small store, reasonable inventory for its size. Prices are about average on all games, though they are in flux at the moment.]

Game Point
2625 S Donaghey Suite 102
Conway, AR 72032
www.gamepointgames.com
[Another small store, but with lots of inventory for its size. Prices vary, depending on inventory/rarity. Friendly atmosphere.]

Game Xchange
2125 Harkrider Suite 12
Conway, AR 72032
[Review to be added later]

Game Xchange
3954 Central Ave. Ste F
Hot Springs, AR 71901
[Review to be added later]

Game Biz
2032 Central Ave
Hot Springs, AR 71901
[Small store, medium inventory for its size. Good prices, particularly on older games.]

The Game Room
3812 Central Ave
Hot Springs, AR 71913
[Medium-sized store, LOTS of inventory, covers almost every domestically-released system. Reasonable prices.]

I tried to add the ones I knew around Western NY:

Game Craze
Review
This chain of stores is fairly prominent in the Rochester area, and are great locations to pick up retro and current gen games. The stores generally have tons of Genesis, NES, and SNES games, and they have been known to carry less common items (some 3DO, Virtual Boy, Game.com, and MVS carts, for example). The prices are generally fair, but there are definitely some outliers (some bargains, some overpriced head scratchers). Don't expect much in the way of customer service, and you won't be disappointed.

Locations
1521 Mount Hope Ave
Rochester, NY 14620
(585) 271-5540

1751 East Ave
Rochester, NY 14610

597 Stone Rd
Rochester, NY 14616
(585) 663-4310

1850 Ridge Rd E
Rochester, NY 14622
(585) 266-4610‎

Video Game Monster
This store is fairly new (about a year old) and I have found it to be a great place to visit. The retro game selection is not particularly strong, but they have plenty from PS1 and up; the prices are excellent. The friendly customer service and atmosphere have made me choose to shop here on more than one occasion. Highly recommended.

http://www.videogamemonster.com/
Address:
7374 Pittsford-Palmyra Rd.
Fairport, NY 14450
(585) 223-7550

Game Players Unlimited
This is a smaller store out in Brockport. It has an excellent selection of well kept retro games. The prices are usually dead on, and you will generally be pleased with their selection.

45 N Main St
Brockport, NY 14420
(585) 637-8370

Phoenix Arena
This store is located in McKinley Mall. It is fairly large, and it has an impressive collection of retro games and VHS tapes. They sell for a wide variety of systems, and even have some loose boxes and manuals for sale. Strongly recommended.

I'm going to add a shitload of Japanese stores soon (not ones that are well known, either). I'll be sure to add the various Super Potatoes.

Really, only the two main stores (Den Den and Akihabara) are real retro stores; the others are ordinary game stores.

I just finished adding EVERY Game Xchange there is (according to the corp site). Wow...MO, OK, and AR has a ton of these places in them. Play n Trade is next on the "corporate stores that have some retro" list but there is no master store list of easy reading...crud.

My concern is that some internet dick will add bullshit stores, edit reviews, delete stores, etc...

I mean it's a great resource and it'd be smart to keep it that way.

The only way to allow non-DPers to add stores would really be have them e-mail stores to someone and have that person add a store.

edit:

AHHA!!! The name of the map was changed to Vintage Stock. Someone named Amber just added a store called Vintage Stock. This was either an error on Amber's part or is an intentional way of advertising this store. Either way I'm not impressed.

I agree with you, however I do not have the time at the moment to create it private, then create another website with submission page to have it emailed to me, and then add all the ideas. To be honest I would LOVE IT if I got some DPers to help me with this site idea. It doesn't have to be much, just the map, explaining map rules, maybe some tips of retro, and contact info. Now if anyone in here is good at this web junk and want to help, let me know.

Around the Dallas area, there's:

Console Game Exchange - 13331 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX
Console Game Exchange - 811 N Central Expy, Plano, TX
Console Game Exchange - 2601 Preston Rd, Frisco, TX
Play N Trade - 1201 E Spring Creek Pkwy # 140, Plano, TX

There's also several locations of Movie Trading Company stores across the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, but I don't know whether to list them because they really don't specialize in classic games. They're about movies and they've added classic retro games in small sections in their stores, but some stores don't have too much in comparison to other locations.

Here's another one that's a bit odd... it's CROPS Collectibles, in booth 2033 at Trader's Village (weekends only flea market) in Grand Prairie, TX. He's got far more than any of the other stores around the metroplex, but he's only a part of a larger flea market that's not open weekdays. I thought you might add it anyway, with the mention of it's circumstances.

I'd be glad to help. I'd suggest just setting up a blog that people can post to (or at least post comments). The posts/comments could be the names, addresses and reviews of stores.

edit: whoops - more vandalism - something stuck a store in the Baffin Sea called place mark 167. More likely stupidity than vandalism though.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! I created a full time job, now if only I can pay myself...

However it is at the point that there needs to be a site about the map. However due to my schedule I can not get it rolling on my own (senior project from hell). So...this is a call out for help AND a checklist for me for future reference

I would definitely be interested in helping out with this project! Unfortunately I'd only really be able to help with adding legitimate stores to the map. My HTML skills are lacking and wouldn't trust myself creating reliable web pages for this.

But if you need help adding legitimate stores to the map I'm all for it. I basically do nothing outside of school and am on Digital Press when I'm in school anyway.

Ok...an update:

First took care of your entries Steve W.

Second on my checklist I am at 1.5. http://giantretromap.wordpress.com/
So, now the signing up part:

If you want to ONLY help with inputing and verifiing map points, PM me your GMAIL account.

If you want to ONLY help with the blog and webby stuff, PM me your WORDPRESS ID

If you want to do both, then send both in a PM

Once I get enough volenteers and the site in a somewhat decent working order, then I will shift it over to this site.

How about adding some locations for really good arcades?

I got your email about adding sites to the map - thanks. Why are some sites red, some blue and some green? Is this based on Blue = North America, Green = Asia and Red = Europe?

And light blue is Canada, helps with the people finding one spot over another without zoom REALLY close.

I thought I'd mention, just to make things a bit more hectic for you (sorry), that according to one of the guys in the Console Game Exchange I went into yesterday, they are about to open a new location in Irving Mall in Irving, TX. I haven't gone in to see it yet, so I don't know any more details. Any store that sells classic games (the Valley View location has Neo-Geo games!) is fine in my book, especially when they're so close. It's just a shame that they don't have a whole lot of pre-NES stuff. They sure do have a ton of NES games, though. And all of three SMS games.

2 answers:

1) Add store either prematurly and update later or add store when opens

2) Show them the website and tell them to add their store once it opens

Problem solved!

Also as for "What makes a store retro?" I have a simple meathod: if you sell games for systems 2 generations ago, it is retro (ie Dreamcast, Playstation, N64 and before) exception: Game stops are not retro even though they sell game boy games....however I am hearing that is going to change soon.

I actually talked to someone at Gamestop just yesterday about this. They aren't going to stop selling Gameboy games as long as they still support the Gameboy advance because the Gameboy Advance plays Gameboy games. Once they stop carrying the Advance (like they recently did with the Gameboy/Color) then they will liquidate Gameboy Games. Completely unrelated but just a heads up.

You should ask that person why they stopped selling PS1 games :)

That is a good point. Probably because corporate is stupid.

Yay, I'm useful!

Book & Music Exchange:

628 E Diamond Ave
Evansville, IN 47711

Owensboro, KY 42303

Book Broker (or Sailorneorune's little slice of heaven :) )

2717 Covert Ave
Evansville, IN 47714

The more, the merrier, but there aren't that many retro game fans in my area.

I read some of the reviews on Book Broker -- a couple of which came off to me as a little snobbish. I don't really care if it's cluttered; it's easy enough to find someone to ask about anything they have, as the prices and people are equally nice.

This is an awesome idea, and I'm surprised no one's suggested it before. I wholly support this! I'm not sure if I managed to get these in before the lock, but I tried uploading them myself. I made kmz files for three stores in michigan that I've been too. Here are descriptions and so on, but I'll link to the kmz files themselves if you want to save the trouble...

Toybox and Treasure
315 N Telegraph Rd, Waterford, MI 48328

(248)706-1255

Located inside the nearly vacant Summit Place Mall, Toybox has a pretty large collection of classic games ranging from 2600, nes, snes, gb, genesis, sms, game gear, dc, ps1 on up to today. They also have a pretty nice selection of old accessories. Unfortunately, prices are pretty steep. Still one of the best classic games selections I've seen in Michigan. 3/5

Get Your Game On
709 Packard Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48104
734.786.3746
http://www.getyourgameonline.com/

This unfortunately named game store seems to cater more towards current generation games, but still has some retro stock. A decent selection of pencil and paper RPG stuff too. 2/5 Hours: M-Th 11-9 PM F-Sa 11-10 PM Su 12-6 PM

Flipside Records
41 E 14 Mile Rd Clawson, MI
(248) 585-4090

Although they are mostly a music store, Flipside sells a smallish selection of classic games ranging from ps1/2, n64, nes, snes, gbx, genesis, saturn, dc, game gear, xbox and even 2600. Prices are pretty reasonable, although stock doesn't seem to rotate enough. They've had a Jaguar cd toilet for about eight years I think... 3/5

Hours:
Mon-Fri 11:00am- 9:00pm
Sat 11:00am- 8:00pm
Sun 12:00pm- 5:00pm

^ Updated with store info, yea I am noticing people are chaging the map title and description. I fixed it and the few stores that were changed. However I do have a beta for how the map is going to work in the future, check it out here.

Hey, I used to live in the Salt Lake City area and was adding all the retro game stores I knew there last night. I didn't get a chance to finish and now it seems I can no longer edit the map. What's the best way to get the rest of my entries onto it?

I see someone's listed the Rochester Game Craze's on the map. I ought to list the two around the Syracuse area (I noticed there's a sever lack of good retro stores in this state) once I get their addresses. Unfortunately they're not the greatest places to browse for vintage gamers as their stock hardly ever rotates.
