View Full Version : OKC Game Night: April 26th @ Flacks!
Flack
04-12-2008, 09:43 PM
Who: You!
What: Games and trading!
Where: Yukon, OK.
When: April 26, 2008, 6:30pm-Midnight*
Why: Fun, fun, fun!
-----
You wanted it, you got it! Immediately following the Oklahoma Electronic Game Expo (http://www.robohara.com/oege/oege.pdf) (OEGE) on April 26th, several Digital Press regulars will be meeting at Fire Mountain for some good eats and good times. If you've ever wanted to see how your favorite Digital Press regulars eat grub, here's your chance! Following dinner, the group will then migrate to Flack's house for an evening of gaming, game trading, and all-around fun. Flack has 30 arcade games, half of which are working at any given time. Downstairs, the Nintendo Wii will be hooked up for all to enjoy. Upstairs, expect old-school and new-school gaming to collide on multiple television screens. Downstairs we will also have tables for people to set up systems, trade piles, or whatever you want. I have several composite monitors and older televisions for system hookups.
Q: Where does Flack live?
A: PM me or e-mail me for address, instructions, and my phone number.
Q: Where is Fire Mountain?
A: Fire Mountain is located at 6500, SW 3rd OKC, and sits directly across the street from the new Best Buy. SW 3rd is the frontage road that runs east/west just north of I-40, between MacArthur and Council.
Q: What can I bring?
A: Whatever! Games, systems, controllers, trade piles, snacks, drinks ... PM me for more details.
Q: What systems does Flack have hooked up, ready to go?
A: Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, CD32, C64, Amiga 1200, PSX, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii. Have others? Bring 'em! As a general rule I only have 2 controllers per system, so additional controllers for 4 player systems would be welcome!
Q: Why is there an * next to the time frame?
A: The group is planning on meeting at Fire Mountain immediately following the conclusion of OEGE. That will be approximately 5pm. We are giving ourselves an hour to eat, plus driving time, which should put us at my house at approximately 6:30pm. If you are not planning on eating with us, you can either meet us at Fire Mountain in the parking lot (look for the black Chevy Avalanche with the license plate "FLACK") or meet us at my house at 6:30pm -- if we're not there yet, hang out a few minutes -- we're on our way!

Bad idea. I think Moses touched on that in Leviticus.
I could be wrong.

One of these times I'll have to find a way to make it out that way for something like this, I hear about it and it just sounds like a blast... but alas, West Coast livin'. :monkey:

Woo hoo. This sounds quite fun. I don't really know anyone here, but I very rarely get to do any event with any other gamers. Most larger out-of-state cons are quite outside of my budget.
At any rate, I'll toss you a PM Flack.

I'll see you guys at OEGE if you get there in the morning. I'll bring complimentary cans of Full Throttle. We have another event that evening, the Rush concert, so we probably won't be able to stay too far into the afternoon.

Just a heads up -- two members of the Oklahoma Coin-Op Collectors forum stopped by tonight and laid hands on several of my less-than-perfect arcade cabinets. When they were done, almost every cabinet I owned that had issues is now up and running again! I'm not sure if I can remember them all, but I know they fixed my Off-Road, my Mortal Kombat 3, my Roadblasters, my Buster Bros. and my Karate Champ. These guys are awesome, and thanks to them, all of those machines (and more) will be ready for you to play on the 26th!

Was there something wrong with the off road? I hadn't played it in a while, but I thought it was working. My apologies if there was and lmk if there are any parts you needed so I can dig them up for you.

Nothing was really wrong with it. I just needed help reconnecting the steering wheels and pedal bar. The JAMMA connector had also come loose in transit. We fired it up after all that and it works great!! It needs a cap kit (which you told me about) but so do about half of my games at this point. I really need to buckle down and learn that skill.

Wish I could come up this weekend, but it wouldn't be a good time to tear down a monitor anyway. I'll just need to make a trip out that way some weekend and show you. It's cake once you see it done the first time!

The guild is located in Bhat Nightwater.
You will need to speak to 98Pacecar before you begin the quest or you won't have sufficient rank to do so. He will ask you for the Level 1 Cap Kit. Trade it to him and he will grant you the Initiate rank and your first skill. After that, you can take the Novice test whenever you have 11 points under your Arcade Repair skill. To get those points, just go to the auction house and buy a Continuity Meter and like 50 Faulty PCB's. It'll take nearly all of them to find 11 broken traces, which is the only skill you will have as an Initiate. When you have gained 11 skill points, go talk to 98PaceCar again and he'll give you the Novice test. Once you're a Novice, you'll have the Cap Kit skill.

Take care,

OKgamers.com just made my fav list. Thanks!
How was the party, guys? It's 1:30 AM and I just got home from work. Sorry I had to spend the whole time pimping drinks but if I have to work, I'd like to do it at a gaming convention! I didn't get to play a single game though. :(
I can finally add some people to my list of board members who I have met.

I've been home for about two hours and I gotta say thanks for the Full Throttle - I'm not sure I would've made it home at all without that! :drinking::o
I'll post a more extensive report tomorrow sometime when I'm capable of making sense. It was a neat little show, but little was the operative word - shame on the sponsors who pulled out or just pulled no-shows. People come to these things ready to buy, and seeing a very thin crowd of vendors turns into a very thin crowd of attendees, rinse and repeat. I hope that doesn't hurt this show's chances in the future; hopefully the fact that it's backed by that college's computer department gives it a little bit of a support structure that most first-time shows lack.
Sorry I couldn't stay longer at Flack's - the arcade is awesome, the upstairs loft with old systems and old Star Wars toys galore is awesome, and the black cat who followed me everywhere after I petted him for something like 10 seconds was also awesome. LOL
There'll be more to tell when I can actually keep clusters of more than two or three brain cells firing simultaneously.
Also thanks to everyone who came to my table to talk games and then had to watch as I whipped out the baby pictures. Hey, I gotta brag about something.

Oh. Those were baby pictures you had in your front pocket. As soon as you said "excuse me as I whip this out", I left. Quickly. :embarrassed:
We had an awesome time at the party, Earl. Not long after you left we had pizza and in the arcade room Flack kicked my ass repeatedly in Karate Champ (I didn't feel too bad: it was the first time I ever played that game). Later, a bunch of us went upstairs and Rob showed us his skateboard skillz (not that great but Rob was fantastic at knocking over his opponents - and pissing them off :devilish:). Later icbrkr tried out the Conan game on the PS3 and proved to us what a sucky game it was.

This is how dimwitted I am, I just realized that you were the one handing out the Full Throttle. I didn't really meet you since I just thought you were another vendor, and I must not have heard anyone mention who you were. I heard Flack say that you were there giving out Digital Press name badges, but that was at a different entrance than the one I came in at. I didn't connect the two. Bummer. I missed the chance to meet another DP member.

Thanks to everyone who made it out. I haven't written up a review of the day yet ... I'll try and do that tonight. It was nice to meet Neist, Namzep and his friend Tim, and see all my old friends again. I think this was everybody who showed up: Crossbow & Vicky, Flack & Jeff, Gapporin, Icbrkr, Josh Krisner (OKC Coin Op Forum), Namzep & Tim, Neist, Phosphor Dot Fossils & Kent, and Ubikuberalles. In addition those people, DeputiyMoniker, Samtron, and SteveW were at OEGE but didn't make it out to the party.

OEGE After Party
It's a vicious trend -- the older I get and the more games I collect, the less time I have to play them -- especially with others. I have piles of new games, old games, and arcade games that collect dust on a day-to-day basis. A couple of times throughout the year, some friends of mine and I organize "game nights" -- a time and place where "big kids" can get together, forget about school/work/kids for a while and spend some time talking about, trading, and most importantly, playing games.
As several of my online friends were coming in from out of town to attend OEGE last weekend, we decided that after the show would be a great time for everyone to get together and have a game night. I volunteered my place (only fifteen minutes away from the OEGE show location).
My house was divided up into three main gaming locations: upstairs, downstairs, and the arcade (my backyard shed, converted into an 80's-style arcade). Upstairs was easy -- it already functions as a fulltime gameroom, with systems from the Atari 2600 and the NES all the way to the Xbox 360 and PS3 hooked up, ready for gaming action. Downstairs the Wii was hooked up to our main television, and tables were set up to accomidate additional gaming systems and/or trade boxes. The arcade didn't need much work at all, other than a bit of vaccuuming and Windexing.
The cool (and sometimes stressful) thing about game nights are 1, you never know who's going to show up, and 2, you never know what people are going to want to do. As anyone who's ever thrown one can tell you, you never know what people are going to want to see or do for sure.
http://www.robohara.com/pix/blog/oege_party_3.jpg
Namzep, Josh, Icbrkr and Crossbow talk about games.
For the next six hours, Icbrkr, Phosphor Dot Fossils and Kent (from Arkansas), Ubikuberalles (from New Mexico), Gapporin (from Missouri), as well as several Okies including Namzep and Tim (from Stillwater), Neist (from Norman, Crossbow, Vicky and Josh Risner (from Tulsa) along with myself and my good buddy spent the evening gaming. (Yes, I'm aware these people all have real names.) Several people brought their "trade boxes" -- bins full of things they don't want and would like to trade for things they do want -- and a lot of time was spend wheeling and dealing in the living room.
http://www.robohara.com/pix/blog/oege_party_2.jpg
OVGE founder Crossbow digs through someone's trade box.
The arcade was a success, warts and all. There are many cooler arcades (http://lunacityarcade.com/) out there and I have no delusions about the state of my own. Sometimes where people see "arcade games" I see chunks of wood with scratches, patched-together controls and tired monitors. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and (thankfully) there were no technical meltdowns during the festivities. Classic arcade machines are cantankerous at best.
http://www.robohara.com/pix/blog/oege_party_1.jpg
Icbrkr kicks off the arcade with a little Mortal Kombat 3 action as Kent looks on.
Attending OEGE along with people's long drives took their toll on the partygoers. By 11pm things were winding down; Icbrkr, Gapporin and Ubikuberalles sauntered off to claim their respective bunks. One by one the faithful gamers admitted defeat and parted ways. It was an honor to to have so many people travel so far to come visit, hang out, and share the love of videogames with me and others, and I can't wait until the next time.
