What is a Sega CDX, and what is its value? Was it just a combo system or was it its own entity?

It's a combo system combing the Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and 32X into one tiny little power package. It's great! It's also pretty hard to find one, so I'd place it's value close to $100 brand new. It's definitely worth it.

I picked one up for 10 dollars brand new at a pawn sho years ago. One of my greatest finds.

The CDX does not have 32X hardware built in.

Only Genesis 2 and Sega CD hardware.

Though (despite what Sega says in it's instructions) it will accept the 32X hardware just fine.

It's a desirable Sega unit in terms of size and functionality. I'm not too sure on value, but I'd expect to spend about $200 for one.

It has a proprietary AC adapter that is VERY hard to find and fairly delicate. Be sure it has it in working condition if you buy one!!

200 would have been pretty high when I was looking at them a few months ago. More in the 100 range or even a little less.

If you are in the market, you might consider the JVC X'eye, as functionally I believe it is the same (or very close), but if it fails, you have a prayer of fixing it or getting it fixed. The CDX from what I understand is nearly impossible to work on. Still, I find undeniable appeal in the very small form factor of the CDX. Looks like the X'eye might be a little cheaper, and the CDX has gone up a bit (just looked quickly on ebay).

Someone got a deal here (http://cgi.ebay.com/jvc-x-eye-video-game-system_W0QQitemZ270227282138QQihZ017QQcategoryZ620 54QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) if it works.

So does the CDX have its own AC adaptor, or will a Genesis adaptor work fine?

A Genesis 2 adapter will fit but it will not provide proper power. (search the boards, there are many topics about this) It requires 9.5V at 1.5A, positive tip. Same power supply rating that the JVC X'Eye uses, which is a better choice in my opinion since it's far easier to service. I've written a repair tutorial for the most common JVC X'Eye problem (faulty CD door pinswitch) and it's an easy to replace part, as well as a tutorial for USA/JPN cartridge region modification. It has an import friendly cartridge slot (wide enough to fit JPN Mega Drive cartridges without modification) but for region locked games you need to install a switch. The CD drive is also faster than the standard Sega CD drives.

The JVC X'Eye also accepts the 32X far smoother than the CDX as it rests on the system more solidly. And of course the Power Base Converter works as well, but you have to cut down the PCB case so it will fit.

I'd say so, the original power adapter is pictured there with the system, along with the JVC branded control pad.

Yeah, sorry about that, you're right. I don't know why I thought it was a built in 32X also... must be the "X" in the name. LOL.

I do remember having to plug in my 32X in order to get it to play.

Man this pisses me off. The CDX was posted on Craigslist, with original AC adaptor to boot. After making sure it was all there, I offered $45 shipped (they were asking $50). I then get an email telling me it has been sold. That really makes me mad, as I was the first person to respond, so I should have had first dibs on it, and if they didn't like my offer ask if I would raise it. The nerve of some people...

Most people post stuff on craigslist because they can get the cash in hand, in person, instantly and have the items out of their way. When I sell things on craigslist it's because I want them gone ASAP without much work on my part. Granted, it's usually large, heavy things when I do that.

That's pretty typical on CL. I've had 'done deals' with pickup times scheduled that they've sold to someone else because they offered an extra 10 or 20 bucks (on ~100 item). No chance to counter, even. Some people's integrity is pretty cheap.

Honestly in your case, though, packing and shipping something is a pretty big deterrent for people that don't do that sort of thing often. Can't say I blame them too much, though would have been better if they let you make a (nice) counter offer.

I have a chance to buy one at my office for $50 with some games. I am kind of hesitant since I never used the boxed one that I sold off back around Christmas. Besides, I just found an AC adapter to use with my X'Eye.
