I bought this game the other day for $6, with the intent on reselling it. But for some reason it intrigues me. So here is the situation. I hate 90% of all standard turn based RPGs(I liked Final Fantasy 8 and 9 back in the day and Shining Force and such are RPGs that I like).
Will I be lost by not playing the oh-so-expensive first one? And if i am not going to be lost, will I enjoy this game?

You may, considering DDS 2 is a direct sequal from the frist, so you may be lost. I haven't played the second in a long time, so I don't remember if it tells you what happened in the first.

Digital Devil Saga is essentially one game that was split in two (each game takes about 30 hours to complete). Story-wise, you will be completely confused if you don't play the first one first. There is no recap or in depth discussion of the first game's plot. I'd encourage you (or anyone else for that matter) to pick up both games and play them in their proper order. The combat system is superior to just about any JRPG on the PS2 and the story is engaging throughout. DDS is easily the 2nd or 3rd best RPG of the PS2 generation.

What he said. I've just finished DDS 1 and have moved on to 2. Good luck without playing the first one.
That said, they're great games. You could check out GameFAQs for a story guide (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/920605/44693) and just wing it: I think it's worth a bit of head-scratching.

Yeah, the second continues where the first left off and assumes you've played the first so it explains nothing. Get the first one and play it fust
