I just saw a commercial that had music very similar to the fifth level of Rez. I was wondering is anybody else noticed this.

If it's the one I'm thinking of (with the badass strings in the beginning) that would be "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw.

That's definitely the same song. The whole opening riff is ripped straight out of Rez. I normally wouldn't make such accusations, but it is too obvious.

Other way around. That song predates Rez by a few decades. (after some Wiki-fu) Adam Freeland ripped the opening riff from "California Soul" for his track "F.E.A.R." which became stage 5 in Rez.

Everytime I hear that song, I think of the song "Fear" by Eon.

The sample heard throughout both songs is "Fear is the mindkiller". But Eon's version sounds like a sample from an old horror movie..

I noticed that too. Very cool to hear the original song.

Level 5 of Rez is still one of the coolest game experiences going. I'll never forget when I reached that level.

I felt kind of stupid once I discovered the same thing, that the riff is from a pre-existing song. I've never heard it before, but it certainly reminded me of Rez when I heard it. I definitely agree that level 5 was amazing, especially after playing the rest of the game at twice the tempo. It's the only level I tend to go back to.

Sampled also in the early 90's by Pete Rock for ADOR.

Song called "Let It All Hang Out."
