View Full Version : Sega 32X Cable
I've recently acquired a 32X and want to connect it to my Model 2 but I don't have the proper cable. Will any Mini din 9 pin Male to Male cable work, or do I have to use a special "sega issued" cable?
Thanks.

The "Mayor" problem that I see using any other regular 9 mini pin cable, is that the original 32X cable adapter only uses 8 mini pins instead the actual 9,minus the +5v signal coming out from the Sega connector port....Whatever you do,Do not feed that extra +5V into the 32X!!....

The SEGA issued cable connects all pins. The only ones not used are:
Possibly 5v
Composite Video
The 32X forwards all audio channels (L, R, and mono). It does not mix audio, that's done in the Genesis.
The 32X also takes the R, G, B, and Composite SYNC lines for the video mixing. The 32X from there will encode it's own NTSC/PAL Composite Video signal.

[QUOTE=evildragon;1357351]The SEGA issued cable connects all pins.
This is not correct,The Original Sega 32X cable converter does not connect +5V signal at all,the pin is not even there.

He doesn't need a converter, he needs a patch cable.
And the pin for 5v is there. Perhaps your cable is different. Mine has it though.
PS: If you read what I said, I said "Possibly 5v" that it wasn't there. I know there was some revisions of the 32X so the cables are possibly different too.

The actual name given by Sega on the 32X system manual for that cable is the "CONNECTOR CABLE" and the one that connects to the Genesis Model 1 is the "CONVERSION CABLE" not a patch cable either!...
I have different revisions of the 32X system,
I strongly doubt that any Original 32X connector cable has the 5V pin...Do you have a picture to prove this?....

I stand corrected, mine doesn't have the 5v line. But like I said, POSSIBLY.
But still, in the real world, he needs a PATCH cable (the cable for his MD2 to 32X), and that is the name he'll find it under on eBay and places.
Please don't complicate things.

Jesus Christ dude, for once don't try to pick an argument of assumption...

InsaneDavid: Thank you.
I'm not going to pretend that I fully understand everything being said, but could I use a standard cable and cut off the 5v pin? Before answering, please keep in mind that I may have no idea what I am talking about.

I've read on here before that a few people used the cable with the 5v pin and were able to use the 32x without having to plug it into a power outlet. I've never actually tried this and I imagine its probably not the greatest idea in the world, but I would do it just to save the hassle of another power supply. So if you leave the 5v pin intact, don't plug the 32x into the wall. If you do cut it off, it would be just like the official cable and you would use everything normally.

If it can do this, it'll overload the Genesis PSU. While I have been able to run the 32X on 5v power, it's load isn't small either. The MD1 load is about the max of the PSU that comes with it. I tested this with an ammeter.
Symptoms will be a very hot Genesis PSU.

I agree with evildragon on this one!....Genesis will be running so hot and eventually start to develop glitches at some point during game play....+ you'll will have to directly unplug the Power supply in order to power the whole thing off.....Also,The On/Off button feature won't be longer available either.

Actually the power switch will function. The switch can control the 5v line as it is at the regulator stage of the Genesis.
I can check weather the power switch is the IN or the OUT of the regulators.
Because of this either way, the power switch will shut of the 32X completely (not even sleep).
(Proof of this, use a voltmeter)

Yes indeed, you are right!....my bad.....But is you happen to plug both Power Supplies for the Genesis and 32X at the same time with the 5v signal connected to the 32X.....It will go to a Power Stand By mode...Then,the On/Off button won't longer funtion properly.

Yes, if both are attached.
Actually, if JUST the 32X adapter is plugged in, the same thing might happen too.
If two adapters are plugged in with the 5v line attached, it will actually make the 5v between both systems shared, but strong.
See, the 5v lines would be parallel to each other, so it won't add voltage, but current (too much voltage is bad, but a lot more than needed current won't hurt a thing), will be added to the 5v, but then shared between systems.
Hard to understand, I'd need to illustrate it later tonight if needed.

I was hoping not to get so technical on this one, because other people is not(it may sound like we are speaking greek)....I'm sure that any regular 9 mini pin cable will work ok,minus the 5V pin of course...Although,the noise filter that the Original Sega cable connector provides, does helps a lot.....Not so long ago I was reading a thread around here somewhere, and there was a link to a webstore that actually sell 3rd-party Sega/32X cable connectors....Hope this helps!....
Maybe evildragon can get a close up shot of the 32X cable connector pins,so you'll get an idea of which pin(5v) to knock off.

Are you talking about the ferrite bead? It doesn't really help much at all, the cable is so short, it's not really needed.
I guess if your in a very noisy (electrically) environment, you'd need it, but even in my setup with 4 200w speakers blasting (along with vintage tube powered amp), and MANY recording/playing equipment always running near, I never have a problem without the ferrite bead.
I'm not home right now, I'll get a picture later.

If Sega decided to put it there, it was for a good reason..Besides in my case,I have all of my video game systems+tv+receivers+electric guitars+amps....all within a room..

Sega only put it there to pass FCC Regulations.
Just like them metal plates and clips for both CD and 32X. Just for FCC regulations. Everyone knows that.
Oh, and if your referring to the picture quality over the Genesis only, that's because the 32X takes the clean RGB signals and NTSC/PAL encodes it by itself, with a slightly better encoder.
Once again nothing to do with the ferrite bead, but more of the encoding chips involved.

Believe or not,I have done several testings with the so called,as you refer them to "Metal plates",for both the 32X and sega CD.....They are actually, electromagnetic RF shielding plates....And they do help, especially when there are many electronic devices near.....

Stop being so complicated.
We just call them metal plates, because it IS a metal plate.
But it was merely for FCC regulations.
Stop trolling, but since you seem to think they make a difference. Prove it! I dare you.

Oh shit dude, then I guess I should be getting MAD interference when I use my Multi Game Hunter (backup device) with my JVC X'Eye (OH NOES! there's no shielding between the Genesis board and SCD drive / daughterboard in there either!!) since it's basically a powered I/O system and a floppy disk drive sitting atop the JVC X'Eye connected with only an unshielded passthrough cartridge (similar to the smash that sticks out from the bottom of a 32X). Strange, I don't get any interference what so ever. Must be because of that big RF shield around the JVC X'Eye.. oh wait, there isn't one? Nothing at all?? Did you make sure to pad that Neptune "prototype" of yours with plenty of RF shielding?
Honestly I try to stay out of the threads you post in but I end up with a few occasional reads here and there when they get up to the top of the thread list. It makes my skin crawl to think that you're handing out service and usage advice - and always with the anal tinge of argument, for what seems to be only for the sake of being argumentative. There's a reason not many of us reply to threads you turn up in and it's not because you've answered a query so thoroughly it requires no further discussion. No, it's because we don't want to have to listen to the endless badgering about completely unimportant and trivial things it will bring on. So much to the point that after being grilled about every single detail we say "screw it, you win if you want it that bad" and move on, as is apparently what happened above. And who really gets shafted? Why, the person who originally needed some information of course!
The only place there seems to be an excess of shielding is around your skull.

I'm sorry to inform you,but the JVC X'eye does have a thin layer of RF foil shielding.......I'm still proud of my Neptune that succesfully sold at Ebay and the new owner was very pleased(which I never stated that it had shielding nor that it was perfect in any way).....Wow!.....I can't believe that I can cause this much attention!....
