View Full Version : Has the price of gas slowed down your game hunts?

I used to go to the flea markets almost every weekend a couple of years ago. But now, with the price of gas pushing higher and higher, I find myself rarely going at all. I still enjoy the hunt for looking for games in the wild, but traveling a hundred miles or so gets pricey quick.

I still hit all of the local thrift stores as often as I can, but have only been to the flea markets once this year.

Never really went on hunts and I'm so well located that I can be anywhere within 20 miles tops (90% of places within 5miles) definetly sucks though that gas keeps going up! I only get 16mpg in the city in my awd v6 car :(

No, since I don't have a car. The whole "not having a job" thing has slowed me down, though. :(

I do have a car but no job. Luckly I can pick up the games for a cheap price around here and then sell them for the gas money and extra cash I get for them.

Yes, it has definitely made a difference. I don't really go many places anyways but it still makes things difficult. While putting $5 - $10 into the tank, not too long ago, used to actually do something now it's pretty much useless.
What's the most infuriating is that nobody does anything about it. If people would get organized and set a date to stay home from that point on the greedy oil industry and all of their crooked politician lackeys would be brought to their knees within a weeks time. Perhaps less.
What is it going to take, $10 a gallon? $20?

It's cutting down on how far I go for garage sales a little bit, but I've been shutting the truck off and coasting down a lot of hills lately and it's really helped the mileage. I'll still go to the one flea market because its close, but two others that I didn't really like that much anyway, I've quit going to all together.

It has for me. Where I live, there is NOTHING in the surrounding area. There isn't public transportation, so I have to drive. Ebay and Digitpress are my friends for classic stuff now.

considering how much I drove around today, I guess it hasn't affected me yet

Not really, because my car isn't drivable yet and I don't have a license. I typically ride my bicycle to sales in my area.

Not too badly. I haven't gone game hunting in a while since I've cleaned this area out...but I've been hitting a couple new shops I found as of late. My friend lives around the corner from one, so that's easy to go to when I feel like...and another, though out of the way, has good enough inventory to make it worth it.

On a given week I usually I go out on my lunch hour and hit the game shops one day and the thrift stores the other, but I'm starting to feel a little guilty about that; like maybe the current relative scarcity of the pre-NES items in both places doesn't justify the expenditure of fuel. In other words; between the current price levels of gas and the fact that I strike out more often than I score, perhaps it's not worth the effort and maybe I should cut this back to one day a week or eliminate it altogether until petrol gets back below two or maybe two-fitty per gallon.

Similar here. I take my son to a few thrifts twice a week in the morning, but it is starting to not seem worth it. A combination of gas, and no great finds lately (I think people aren't giving crap to the thrifts and are saving it for their summer garage sales or something) are making it less and less worthwhile. I'm sure I'll be out for the garage sales this summer, though. My son (19 months) and I both like it a lot, and I'll be using the wife's Prius on garage sale days.

The rise in gas prices doesn't effect me much as my record with flea market and thrift stores is nearly zero. Will scavenge more in the summer with garage sales.

Until then...that's why we have craigslist.

Which is why I sold all my old games for gas money.

Definitely.

I used to go out of town to a ton of pawn shops and such hunting for deals, but lately it's not worth it - I'm not coming home empty handed now, I'm coming home minus the $20 or so I spend in gas driving around not finding anything.

There is a few pawns in my city, but only one really good one, the others are overpriced or simply just don't carry games.

I do miss the hunts, but it makes the ones I do go on that much greater when I do actually find something (and I found two very awesome things this week!)

Has the price of gas slowed down your game hunts?

Yeah but not as much as having a baby has. Whenever I have time to hit garage sales I don't really have the gas to waste. I just started a new job so hopefully that'll free up some money for gas. I miss making my rounds. At $50 per tank, the price of gas is dipping into all the things I enjoy. I've been going to school so that hasn't left me with enough time to work full time...so money will probably be short until I finish my degree. So, yeah, gas is a real bank robber these days.

For me, not really. Especially now that one of my usual haunts has upped their selection of retrogames....and it's only a 10 minute drive down the road, less than that with little or no traffic.

Lucky for us who live in Southern California, all you need to do is drive to one Swap Meet (they are huge) and you can literally clean house each weekend. Always, some great classic gaming items there, and all located in one place. Imagine a couple hundred garage sales all in one parking lot and you get my drift. I do have to drive about 15 miles to get there, but that is nothing in Cali.

And, I have a company car and they pay all my personal gas so that helps ALOT :)

Happy Hunting.

I definitely go hunting less often. Maybe once a month or month and a half instead of once a week.

No out-of-the-way trips. The local stores are either near home, work, or on the way between. Gas has pretty much put a nix on everything, it seems. It's outrageous that my little Aveo takes $30-40 to fill, twice weekly.

It has for me. This crap has to stop, or we will all be riding bikes to work like they do in third world countries!

IDEA!

Not to sound like a snot ('cause I do), but gas prices aren't going down any time soon. That American ingenuity should be able to produce a car that runs on something other than, and perhaps even cleaner than oil.

Or maybe a decent public transportation system.

Most of my searches are always unfruitful, so I mostly gave up.

So, basically, no, it hasn't.

ok, all those geniuses who replied "dont have a car/license" etc... THIS QUESTION WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT MEANT FOR YOU. so your opinion doesnt matter and just clutters up the discussion with meaningless drivel.

back on topic.
i live in NYC, so theres pretty much no flea markets to speak of, and nevertheless i can take the subway pretty much anywhere. i still drive, just as much as i did before, i hate public transportation, all the fat and old people on the bus piss me off and the subway is loud/uncomfortable/filthy.

i was pretty pissed that gas rose like 20 cents in my area overnight, and i put off getting gas last night cause i was tired.
