View Full Version : The games time forgot about

Im talking of a few Nintendo games in particular. Tin Star for SNES, that had TinStar on screen shooting enemies while a cursor is guided with the D pad. It was mediocre action and the humor was lame. It hasnt been heard from since its release..I think Nintendo disowned it. That and Uniracers. What the hell? You guide a Unicycle(just a unicycle) on a series of colored loops to race. Generic.
Others that were actually good from Nintendo was Yoshis Safari, which i loved when i was little, still has great music and poor Yoshi getting shot by Mario during the totals screen after each stage. Earthbound is a sad forgotten game in the rpg vein, Nintendo released it with a "this game stinks!" tagline for its US release, and with bad sales Nintendo just plain doesnt want Mother 3 on our shores, ever. It had good humor, you battle cars and street signs, equip baseball bats and some characters..fart. I beat this game once a year, and with games localized from Nintendo like Tales of Phantasia and the endless string of Pokemons, you'd think Nintendo would release Mother 3. Thankfully a fan translation is in the works.
Any games you liked that noone talks about anymore? Underdog games? Dynamite Headdy? Ristar? The games i mentioned?

Vanguard (Atari 2600)
Legendary Wings (NES)
Mischief Makers (N64)

Games I like no one talks about anymore? Well how about just a few:
NHL '94
Rock the Rink
Barker Bill's Trick Shooting
Shark! Shark!
Bomberman '94
Three Stooges
How did I do?

Why have you forgotten about Kid Icarus, Nintendo? Sure, you gave Pit a role in Brawl, but he needs his own damn game again.

yeah, they seem to "forget" about certain franchises. Pit hasnt had a game since..well..his first on NE-FUCKING-S! (and GameBoy.) Mischief Makers was fun, strange, "shake shake!" of a game. hawt. yeah, Uniracers is okay. Just forgotten as all hell. Stunt Race FX, too!

I love uniracers, I always thought it was funny that if you put sega or sonic as your name it would say not cool enough and not let you do it.
Wasn't Uniracers Nintendo's respose to Sega's "Blast Processing" ads? Sega was claiming how much faster things in their games could move. Uniracers showed that the SNES could move things quickly too.

I always like to bump Rock & Roll Racing & Indiana Jones & the Fate of Alantis (Spoken version). Also, I loved the Blade Runner game on the PC too. Possibly less spoken about are Gods, Magic Pockets & one of my all time favorite platformers, Mad Professor Mariarti.

I'm gonna second Air Fortress, Slalom, and Magic of Scheherezade.
Here's some I'll add:
Alpha Mission (NES)
Spelunker (NES)
Truxton (Genesis)
Drakkhen (SNES--this game gets slammed so badly, but I essentially bought a SNES in 91 to play this game. There are so many elements of this little gem that have become fixtures in modern games. The day/night cycling and the ambient noises have been essentially appropriated by the new Zelda games, and I understand the fighting system in Final Fantasy XII is essentially lifted from Drakkhen.)
Equinox (SNES--probably among the best audio the machine was ever capable of putting out. And a damn fine puzzle/adventure game to boot, with tons of atmosphere.)
Golgo 13-Top Secret Episode (NES-was an epic in it's day)
Xenophobe-arcade
Section Z-arcade/NES
sooooo many more. Learning about underappreciated classics is kind of a hobby of mine, so I've got a lot to say on the subject.
Streetball 21

Alpha Mission (NES)
Golgo 13-Top Secret Episode (NES-was an epic in it's day)
I don't think too highly of Alpha Mission, but I used to love Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode. I even beat it sometime around 1990 using the stage select.
I doubt I'll ever play it again though. It was too difficult and confusing. I praise Vic Tokai's ambitious design, though (action levels, sniping levels, helicopter levels, swimming levels, first-person 3D maze levels, etc.).
Blast Corps-N64 (severe underdog)
I agree, Blast Corps was fun. Another one: Goemon's Great Adventure.

how about shinobi 3 on genesis everyone talks about the other shinobis on genesis and master system but they cant hold a candle to shinobi 3.
Revenge of Shinobi (especially the original version with the superhero bosses) is better than part 3 IMO. Anyway, Shinobi 3 has been re-released on the PS2 Genesis Collection and the Wii VC, so I don't think it's been forgotten.

Amazingly i own spelunker..not too bad, reminds of a game ive played before. Goonies 2?
I'll try Drakkhen, looking for another SNES rpg to play anyways. are there any other good rpgs besides the usual(Chrono Trigger, FF3/6, Secret of evermore/mana, Star Ocean?)?

Aaaaaaah, so many games I LOVE that normally get blank, confused stares from people when I mention them.
The first ones that spring to mind:
Atomic Runner (Mega Drive)
The Legend Of Galahad (Mega Drive)
Quackshot (Mega Drive, STILL one of my favourite games EVAR!)
Alisia Dragoon (Mega Drive - SORCERER CHICK WITH PET DRAGONS! HOW CAN IT FAIL?)
Asterix (SMS)
Master Of Darkness (SMS - SEGA's answer to Castlevania on the NES, pretty damn fine!)
Pokemon Snap (N64 - HIGHLY underrated spinoff!)
There's others but I'm waaay too tired.

Diddy Kong Racing and Pokemon Snap are great games, but are they really forgotten? They each sold over three-and-a-half million copies, Pokemon Snap is available on the Wii Virtual Console, and Diddy Kong Racing spawned a portable sequel...all of which are good things! :)

In an era before fishing controllers, NES Black Bass was an enjoyable diversion for me.
While I don't consider them among my favorites, a lot of earlier NES games like Trojan, Legendary Wings, Rush N' Attack, Xenophobe, Legend of Kage and Karnov rarely get mentioned around here. Not calling them classics but there are a ton of games that came out during the same 2-3 year period on the NES that are now lost in the shuffle unless you are trying to unload them on Buy/Sell.

I think that the Interstate 76' and Vigilante 8 series' respectively (different games, same publisher, same game "universe") are pretty much "forgotten" as we're two console cycles and well over 10 years past their origins with NO signs of them being resurrected or continued in any form.
Which is sad ... considering the game series that Vigilante 8 was emulating / capitalizing on the popularity of - Twisted Metal (1-4) was IMHO vastly inferior both graphically and gameplay-wise in comparison to Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8 2nd Offense.
I'd love to see them return in some form (with online play) even in the series' roots of Interstate 76'.

I got the hook-up!
It was so fun tossing my buddies into an alien egg and hatching that giant mutant ant that feel from space and the freaking out, lol, I loved that game. The interactive environments, awesome power-ups and levels themselves were all stellar! The Dreamcast version is the best to get.
On Topic:
"Blazing Heroes" also known as "Mystaria" on the Sega Saturn was a brilliant rpg with a great story and gameplay. That game is without a doubt a game that time forgot that I think deserves better treatment. I would love to see more in that series.
While i'm on a Sega Saturn kick....Three Dirty Dwarves? How bout some more Radiant Silvergun love...oh man the Sega Saturn is KING of games that time forgot that time needs to hurry up and remember!

Wasn't Uniracers Nintendo's respose to Sega's "Blast Processing" ads? Sega was claiming how much faster things in their games could move. Uniracers showed that the SNES could move things quickly too.
It was an illusion. Uniracers has barely anything on the screen, and uses multiple pixel scrolling to give the appearance of "fast movement". That pokey CPU in the SNES could barely handle the game at full frame rate as it is. Then again, many Genesis games that are fast (such as Sonic, or that downhill run in the second area, first level of Castle Of Illusion) use multiple pixel scrolling to give them more visual speed. As long as you're able to keep the frame rate at 30fps or higher, players won't notice the fact that you're using scroll trickery to give the illusion of higher speed.

Someone already mentioned Rock N Roll Racing.
Bump N Jump on the NES I can play for damn hours, even if I keep dying in the 4th level.
Maniac Mansion needs a non PC sequel.
Personally I always loved Kickmaster.
Spy Vs Spy would make a good Wii Ware Game.

Where have all the puzzle and maze games gone?
Boxxle
Puzznic
Maze Craze
Yoshi's Cookie
Klax
Entombed
Too many Tetris clones and brain quiz games have been flooding this once very diverse genre. Most of these games stayed 2D and their platforms shifted into online java games. Some great classics should be modernized and flow just right.

Pokemon Snap really was an amazing game. Some others:
Crystalis
Earthbound
Comix Zone
Rocket Knight Adventures
Splatterhouse 2
Splaterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti
KISS Psycho Circus (KISS Army member, so I may have a severe case of nostalgia and the game blows.)
Sneak King (Got a lot of laughs out of me.)
Eternal Champions
EDIT: Rereading this topic a little bit reminded me of my love for Mickey Mouse in Magical Quest. Found the import at a Flea Market near me and I love it. Even if Disney sickens me, it's a fun little platformer.

Metal Marines for SNES. The PC desktop game of the same name is similar but not as much fun IMO. Drakkhen also had sequel that was re-named Dragon View (http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/dragonview/Dragon_View.html) due to the poor reception of the first.

I think Interstate 76 deserves a revival for sure. Vigilante 8 was a lame side project in my opinion and didn't capture the same mood or intensity as the game it was purportedly related to. Interstate 76 reminded me of a 3D version of the Car Wars games or Autoduel while Vigilante 8 just seemed like a bad Twisted Metal clone.

I saw a Splatterhouse mention...eh, it's getting a "revamp" into another generic third-person action brawler.
Hmm.
My votes are for the SSI Gold Box engine games (Lady Jaye just posted about Neverwinter Nights, the original) and Shadow Man (N64, but also PSX - bad - and DC / PC - good), which got a sequel but seems to be mostly forgotten now. I started slagging it when I started playing it today, but now I've gotten a good ways in and I like it. It's not amazing, but it's pretty okay!

Puggsy by Psygnosis for the Mega Drive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puggsy
a lot have been forgotten on pc :( and they were so great, but was just reading kotaku and on the project origin video the guy mentioned SHOGO, and wow I haven't heard that name for a damn long time ;p
Shogo was awesome :|
Bojay: was a pretty decent clone though ;p
