View Full Version : Choosing a monitor for my cab

Recently I moved, and I had to toss the busted old 19" CRT that was in my cabinet. I kinda want an LCD at this point, despite the possible lag it may offer. (It might not really show with retro arcade games, anyway, so I'm really not TOO worried about that aspect.) Mostly, it's for the weight of it.
Here is a list on Newegg:

Obviously, we're talking a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, and I'm looking for 19". That's the size of the bezel cut on my cabinet. I can always shrink down the screen if it's a bit too big. I'd rather it fit rather tightly.
Any suggestions? I'm looking to buy strictly from Newegg.
Thanks!

Arcade games should be played on CRTs, LCD just does not look the same in my opinion.

Lag may not show up on older games but every single pixel will. CRT's blur the pixels together making the image look smoother.
Is this for a MAME cab?

Where did you come up with that?

Observation.
Even on computer monitors, games made for CRT's look pixelated. It's even worse on, say, a laptop screen. Not that modern monitors can't fix it some...I'm just agreeing with you. Arcade games should be played on a CRT.

No he has a point, Crt monitors can adjust to lower resolutions then a lcd. When I play games on my Mame cab all of the games look good (it uses a CRT monitor). But when I play games on this computer (lcd monitor) everything looks pixelated, even newer games like Marvel Vs. Capcom, doesn't matter how you set it up you'll still get a "pixelated" look.

Well, assuming that I'm dead set on getting an LCD (I realize that it's not ideal, but I'm probably going to due to the weight of it and the bulkiness), which of those would be ideal? I have played MAME a lot of my LCD monitor while sitting at my computer, and I am used to the look.
Thanks for the replies, so far, too.

Just out of curiosity, what do the weight and bulk of the monitor have to do with anything? If it's in a cabinet, it should already have ample room to house a CRT. And it's not like you're going to move it a lot...

Alright, I'm convinced. So.. any Newegg.com suggestions on a CRT monitor to fit my cab? It's got a 19" bezel, so a 19" monitor is preferred. Also, value is a big issue. I'd like to minimize my cost, for sure.
Thanks for any suggestions! :)

I'd suggest hunting around locally. You'll save a lot of money over shipping alone and what's a $5-20 CRT monitor anyhow when you can just buy another when it craps out. Some pawn shops here are selling 17" CRTs for $1 now to get rid of them. If you must buy online then either ask on forums or hit eBay as even Tiger or NewEgg will cost a lot more unless they have some super sale. 21-23+" is a really good size, 17-19" are smaller but if you have limited space will do okay.
