View Full Version : Genesis games to play with the wife

I'm getting back into the Sega Genesis again but now that I'm married I was wanting to find some games that me and my wife can play together...or some single player ones that she might enjoy. Most of my games are either one player or just not her cup of tea. She likes most puzzle type games(we played Colums last night but I think it might have been too fast for her to really enjoy) She also likes cutesy not incredibly difficult games as well. I was thinking of Ecco the Dolphin. Any other sugestions?

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck. It's a simple platformer overall but it's tons of fun, has a license and theme everyone is familiar with and with two players you have to do team moves and work together to clear some of the areas. Working together is a great facet for couples.
And I would second Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

I don't think it bothers her that I'm better at video games than she is. She beats me at almost every board game we play so she has that. Games where we can work together will probally be good though.
She does love Klax. We played the arcade game a few times.
Thanks for the suggestions...were probally going to the game store tomorrow night.

I hate Klax. One of my least favorite puzzlers.
Staying in the Mickey Mouse theme, Castle of Illusion and Mickey Mania are pretty good too.

I used to know a girl who loved Zoom. It's been a while since I've played that and I don't have it in the collection, so I can't remember if it has multiplayer or not.
How about either of the Toe Jam & Earl games, Gauntlet IV, or The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey & Minnie (which has co-op play)?

My wife hates all of my systems and game collection in general, but as soon as I pop up the Genesis game "Flicky" ,the monster unleashes!....She takes over!

You really have to have to have to get Toejam & Earl. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and definitely my favorite multiplayer game of all time. Also, some unlikely people in my life love it, like my mom, for example, who generally doesn't like/sucks at video games.

Maybe Gemfire - although a strategy game, the mechanics of it are really easy to pick up and the battles are pretty simple since you only have five units.

Beat me to it. My roommate in college was racking his brain for a genesis game his fiance would play, and asked me. This was the only thing I could think of, and I was a hero for that day.

Looks a bit like Mappy. Is the gameplay similar?
How are the Tiny Toons games on the Genesis? I remember her saying before that she liked the NES one as a kid.

Konami developed the two Tiny Toons NES games and also developed the ones on the SNES and Genesis. Buster's Hidden Treasure is a platformer that's pretty similar to the NES games. Take note that it's only a one-player game though. And then there's the arcade style sports game Acme All-Stars, which I haven't played, but does offer multiplayer.

In my opinion, its a bit better. being 16-bit, fun graphics, fast gameplay and plenty of levels for its genere...It gets quite adictive after passing the third level..+ you are most likely to find it at a very low price.

Ms. Pac-Man on Genesis has a neat 2 player mode with both players in the maze simultaneously.
Lots of fun.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone. We'll be going to the local game store tonight so hopefully we'll find something. They have a pretty good selection of Genesis games and if I remember right most are under $5.00
I recall my wife having fun w/ Clue, quite decent vers. of the board game. It helps if you use the papers that come w/ the board game itself. She said "dont ever get rid of this one!" Course she hasnt played it since...
She also liked Ms Pac-Man, in co-op you can be Pac-Man & work together just like a married couple. ;) & she found the joypad finicky so you can plug in a normal Atari (DB9) joystick for her.
AFA Gauntlet 4, it's my life dream to have my wife play ANY Gauntlet game w/ me. Just make sure you play the warrior & protect her.

HOLY MUTUAL EXCLUSIVITY, BATMAN!!! Ecco is anything but cutesy and easy.
Perhaps playing through Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles in co-op would be good. One of you Sonic, one of you Tails. The games have versus modes, too. IIRC, Sonic and Knuckles was single player only, but if you used lock-on with Sonic 3, you could access all of the content of both games in co-op.
She might like the art style of Gunstar Heroes, and if you turn the difficulty down, it's not too hard.

I didn't know Acme All-Stars came out on the Genesis, but I did enjoy the SNES version. It's an NBA Jam clone, but it's fun.
Play with the wife and make your own Genesis, much more fun ;-)
Yeah, I found Ecco the Dolphin to be rather difficult & too involving. I got so frustrated I eventually used a level cheat just to see the rest of the game. I'd pass on that one. The Golden Axe games are fun co-op side-scrolling fighters, & there's always Jeopardy & Wheel of Fortune, though Jeopardy's plyr interface is a bit confusing/cumbersome.
Let us know what you picked up & the results! (The lack of response so far tells me maybe someone got lucky...;))

We got some games and played them for an hour or so last night. I let her know the suggestions but pretty much just let her get whatever she wanted. She ended up choosing World of Illusion, Ecco the Dolphin(she LOVES dolphins), The Lion King, and Zoop. I already had Sonic 2 (and Sonic and Knuckles), so we do have a few more 2 player games we can play together. She actually told me that she liked playing games together :)
Thanks again for all the suggestions.

The Streets of Rage games (1,2 & 3) are fun multi-player games. If she likes those, Golden Axe is fun also.
Hah! Just as I logged off I thought of Zoop but I didnt want to bother signing back on. Solid choices I guess, hope she likes Ecco though. I suppose her dolphin love will carry her through.

We never got around to playing Ecco...we'd though of getting Ecco Jr figuring it'd be easier but it cost a lot more. We'd only spent about $2.50 on everything(had some old store credit we needed to use) so it's not like we were wasting a lot of money on something we wouldn't play. World of Illusion was pretty fun as a 2 player game though...I liked the way you had to actually help each other out.
And...uh...it was my birthday;)

Ecco the dolphin? uggh.
Horrible horrible choice unless your absolutely head over heels in love with dolphins. And even then, you'll need some alcohol.
Otherwise good choices :)
Whoever recommended TMNT above, good idea.

You know...I've never really played it much beyond the first level. I always assumed it to be an easier kids game. Guess I was wrong.
I do have a game genie though and found a code to reduce damage from jellyfish and other enemies. Maybe this will be the way to go?

Mega Bomberman can be pretty sweat. Everybody loves Frogger. Monopoly, Syd of Valis, Bonanza Bros., maybe Chiki Chiki Boys? My fiancée likes to play TMNT-Hyperstone Heist and SOR the most. It's hard to get her to play though. :/

Shoot...I didn't think of Bomberman. She likes that game as well. I was looking for Hyperstone Heist but they only had Tournament Fighters. Maybe next time. She's not really much of a gamer but every now and then I get her interested. A few years ago we played the Arcade TMNT to completion. That was lots of fun.

Hyperstone Heist is slightly hard to find in the wild and you might end up paying a good $20 or so for it. If you can get it, though, it is a very good two-player action title with simple controls. It's a lot fun, but just be aware of its potential price.
I'm glad you like World of Illusion. It was always one of my favorite two-player games on the Genesis as it was always fun working together. A good bonus for the game is if you ever get to play it in one-player, depending on who you choose, there are branching paths and extra levels that result from a specific character not being able to clear an area by themselves.
On simple puzzle games, Tetris Attack was never on Genesis but I have to bring up Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. It's a reskinned version of Puyo Puyo like Kirby's Avalanche on the SNES. You don't even have to compete in two-player mode so you can just play side by side and work for your best score, but if you wish, the two-player mode has some classic heated multiplayer.

Well, if you happen to have a MegaDrive then Worms would be a good choice. You probably would have mentioned having a MD though.

06-10-2008, 05:34 AM
generally I think the genesis and mega drive are cross compatible, I haven't come across a genesis game that wouldn't work on my MD yet. although there must be some that don't work because converters exist.
anyway games I recommend: General Chaos, Road Rash, Skitchin'
hehe just kidding, although not all women dislike voilent games. if you want a cutesy and easy one I suggest Quackshot (Donald Duck game), its single player but it's quite fun and very easy to complete. another suggestion is Aquatic Games, very cutesy but not easy (SNES version is much easier but inferior).

Seconded... thirded? Whatever...
I'd like to throw in here that for the few that hope to get their s/o's into RPG gaming that the Genny may not be the best system to start with. I love genny RPGs but:
Shining Force 1 & 2 : Very difficult, some people find the turn-based setup too slow in this game.
Phantasy Star II: doesn't require knowing the plot of the first game, good. Being insanely hard even for RPG stalwarts? Bad.
Phantasy Star III: Just no.
Phantasy Star IV: Would be the perfect "rpg starter" game if the major plot point about ten hours in has nearly -no emotional pull- if you don't know the previous plots. *sigh*
Shining in the Darkness: Actually - probably a good choice. Especially if your s/o likes to play "Navigator" on car trips. Map-makers heaven, this one.
Landstalker - Zelda-ish action RPG with a great plot and gender-friendly trappings. If the person in question can deal with the Solstice-type view, also a great choice.
Sadly, the best 'starter' classic rpg is FF:Mystic Quest, but at the same time could kill any wanting to play rpgs... heh.
This is all my opinion tho, o' course.

Back when we were first dating, my ex-wife used to love the Streets of Rage series, Columns, Flicky and Ms. Pac-Man, but I couldn't ever get her interested in much beyond that on the Genesis. Although when I fired up the SMS and SNES, she got hooked on R-Type and UN Squadron, respectively.

My wife is basically not interested in games; however, she just loves Kid Chameleon. Go figure. Almost every month we spend a whole Sunday afternoon trying to beat it again. Not a game I'd recommend in this case, though.
However, the 2 player vs. mode in Sonic 2 is an excellent choice (though it may turn into a fight if you start winning too much :))!
