Anyone accidentally (or on purpose) punch in combinations on the controller in a game and get a code/password/cheat entered? I think I did with Wario Land..i'll have to think about it.

I figured out some codes to see the ending and get extra powerups in Art of Fighting (SNES) a long time ago.
all the damn time in nfl blitz/2000 on the n64 with those little logo slot things, though back then we just did it and thought it was cool looking and didn't know we were getting handicaps ;p

Back when Sonic 3D Blast came out for the genesis somehow I figured out how to get to the level select screen. After trying to do it again and being frustrated so much that I couldn't do it again, I called the hotline.

I usually was pretty good at nailing out some of Midway's sports game codes (with the three icons) and in WWF Raw for the Super Nintendo I remember flipping out because I figured out 1-2-3 Kid's super move before it was even printed in GamePro.

By mashing buttons, I somehow got 999 medals on Dragon Force. It meant all my generals could have 100 troops but unfortunately the game froze whenever I tried to return to the map. It may have actually been more a glitch than a cheat...!

Found the following NES cheats on accident, without knowing they even existed.
-Second Quest in Legend of Zelda on the 2nd or 3rd day I owned it, named one of the files "Zelda" (after the title) having no idea it would open a second quest. Nor did I know a second quest even existed because at the time I wasn't heavily into gaming magazines. Thought it was funny as hell since my brother and I were both playing at the same time, him using one file and me using the "Zelda" one. For at least a couple of weeks, I was wondering why his game was slightly different than mine since I would watch him play and try to "follow" his footsteps so I'd be keeping up with his progress. That was one rude awakening. Both him and I were awfully confused about why a lot of stuff in my game was in a completely different location than in his. Eventually he got ahold of an issue of Nintendo Power, the very first one I think, and that cleared things up some.
-Sound tests in both Ninja Gaiden 2 and Super C on NES.
-Microwaving the hamster in NES Maniac Mansion, tried it for the hell of it long before I ever heard about it or read about it in a gaming magazine. Also "found" a cheat that lets you bypass the green tentacle on the second floor without giving him any food/drinks. The hamster thing isn't a cheat but a lot of people I know surprisingly never tried it out and had no clue it could be done.

My friend owned Batman Forever on genesis. While fucking around in the options screen, I "accidentally" got the cheat for the 2-player v.s. mode. I remember the two of us being shocked and wanting to write to EGM, but couldn't get the hidden mode again after several attempts to recreate what I put in.

Accidentally stumbled upon a "transform inventory item" glitch in Might & Magic for NES back in the day. Basically, you could get any item in the game without searching for it. Not sure if anyone else ever found it.

I remember playing '3-D Worldrunner' for the NES back in the day. Well, I was pretty far in the game and ended up dying. I knew that there was a cheat to continue in Super Mario Bros (hold the A button and press Start), so on a whim I decided to see if it worked in this game. Sure enough, I was back in the same level that I had previously died on! I wonder just how many NES games actually used that code...
There was some shitty Looney Tunes basketball game on the SNES that had a mode where you could enter random combinations and 'discover' cheats and the like. I spent around an hour or so hitting different buttons and finding quite a few cheats. I was planning on sending it in to one of the game mags, but when their next issue came out, pretty much every code I had discovered and then some had already been found... :(

I found a password in Arnold palmer golf for the genesis that gives you mega clubs. You could get a hole in one on a par 5 hole :) It was a normal password for a save, I made a mistake in entering it to my benefit :)
I also found an expanded sound test in the select BGM option during the game.
I also found a bunch of codes for revenge of the ninja on the sega-cd.
I sent the codes to EGM back in the day but someone must have sent them first I never got credit.
I did get credit on gamefaq for a random never ending watch mode code for the ps3 version of virtua fighter 5. I love this one some times I like to have a game play in the back ground while I do something else.
Beat dungeon explore on sega-cd with a random glitch/code that made my guy invincible. I Never found what triggered it.
Found some random code/glitch in parasol stars on the turbografx
That gave my friend and I unlimited guys.

I did the same thing in Legend of Zelda, naming my character Zelda.
At first I thought "Wow! A Cool new sword!" But after I started, and only got the wood sword, I was dissapointed.

In Super Smash TV for the SNES, I pressed buttons randomly in the menu, and unlocked the secret menu which allows you to face the bosses.
I was little at the time, so my brother and I were so amazed.

I do remember playing the Career mode of 'Sensible World Of Soccer' on the Amiga as a kid and thinking i dont have enough money to buy the players i want...
I went to type Money into the keyboard messing around and upon pressing the letter M, the screen flashed black and i started to rry. I thought i had crashed the game or something. But instead i was given £1,000,000. I then held down the M key for about 30minutes after this!

Hey, somebody was gonna do it, sooner or later. We now resume the helpful, informative part of the thread.

One of the early Joe Montana football games for the Genesis had a pretty flexible password system where you can enter in random phrases and it would accept some of them as legit passwords. My friends and I had a field day with that for a while entering in all the dirty phrases we could think of that would fit in the character limit.

When I was a kid I was playing ZANAC for the NES and I was mashing buttons at the title screen randomly and it unlocked a level select.

I remember just randomly messing around pressing buttons on the team select screen of madden 96 (I believe it was 96) until different historic teams came up.

Found some cheats for Space Harrier (Game Gear) while holding buttons on startup.
Cracked some passwords systems with few options (you know the ones),
found some cheats while digging around in ROMS and ISOS.
Entered 'GOD' in multiple PC game's console and it worked plenty of times..
Oh and I got some sort of different level by entering a Game Gear password
for the Master System version of Prince of Persia.

I found 2 cheats in Contra 4 for cell phones, and still, no cheat site knows about it! It may or may not be an intentional cheat (could be that they forgot to remove certain functions from a beta). The pathetic part: You only need to press one button to activate the cheat (and believe me, it's not just my version; some of my friends, with different platform have the same cheat). One is for activating the Barrier anytime and the other is to cycle through your weapons.
