I introduced a buddy of mine to MAME like two months ago. He liked it so much he bought the XArcade and built a cabinet - check it out:

Damn, that looks good. Mine looks like crap, but that's because I'm using a beat up old Dragon's Lair cabinet that was turned into Ninja Gaiden sometime ago. I just put mine together and have only wired one joystick and 3 buttons...I tested it last night with Burgertime and it worked great...
Anyway, if anyone is tempted to put together a cabinet, I strongly recommend it and this is the best thing that you can buy if you want to use original joystick controls... http://www.ultimarc.com/ I'm an idiot and I was able to figure it out while drinking. Now, that's impressive.

Check out the arcade alt. groups and post to see if anyone in your area has one. I picked up my cabinet for $20 and it came with:
-marquee
-front glass (which is really scratched up)
-control panel
-assorted joysticks and buttons and switches (most were broken)
-coin box
-back door
-a few other pieces
If you get an incomplete cabinet, it might be difficult to find the pieces that will fit and shipping could be expensive for some of the parts.

I have been contemplating this idea for a few years. When I do get the cash to do it, I guarantee it will be one awesome thing. I have planned how the coinbox will work in conjunction with the emulator, and how I can make the entire unit run without the use of a keyboard. WIth a specialized front end, the games will be selectable with the joystick and buttons. I really can't wait to get this accomplished. And it's going right in the living room, no matter what the girlfriend tells me!

I picked up my cabinet for $20Yeah, they're pretty cheap these days. Some people even give them away just to get rid of 'em.
I have an arcade cabinet as well, but I only use it for pcb's.

I have an Operation Thunderbolt cab in MD that someone can have if they are interested. I don't know if it will make the best Mame cab, but who knows?
