Metal Gear on NES..I just..cant..do..it. I even tried the MSX version. Im sure it was groundbreaking in the late 80's, but theres something im missing? I die, a lot. I hide and punch. And die again.

Star Ocean-SNES-Im not a fan of the drab dialogue. Too plain to me, it has to have some charisma to the characters, but i mean if someone else likes it, good. I just cant get into it, i tried for 2 hours. I'd like to give it a shot again.

Final Fantasy 3/6-Theres already a topic on this, but i agree. Again, the text is kinda dull. But if i play it longer, maybe i can care about the story.

Street Fighter 2(+sequels)-Im sorry, i just dont get the games. They all feel the same to me, except for the big characters and the special moves. I could never get into the games. Ive played them all and own SF3 japanese version with the Double Impact game with it, but i still have a tough time trying to get into it. SSF2 turbo has the specials, but theyre fuckin hard to pull off.
Although i did like the PS2 polygonal one, though..odd.

Theres a few more but i'll piss off more fans late-i mean give my opinion again later.

Metal Gear Solid. i tried several times with the ps1 game and the gamecube remake and never was able to get into it more than 5 minutes before i thought it sucked.

i normally like stealth games (splinter cell)

-Guitar Hero. I like what it has to offer, but I've never been able to get into any version of it. No matter what, after one song I'm ready to hand the guitar to someone else.

-Any Splinter Cell game. I've tried a couple demos but got bored quickly. Stealth isn't really my thing.

-Any Metal Gear/MGS game

-DDR

-Any MMORPG, mostly because I'm not a PC gamer.

90% of the games past 1990. There are a few, like Rez, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, the Rush series, Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy, and a few others that I dig, but most games past 1990 are just dreck to me. But then, I'm old.

Killer Instinct. Sure it had flashy graphics, but the gameplay was mediocre at best. Same goes for Primal Rage, which didn't deserve a fraction of the popularity it enjoyed. While I'm at it, Battle Arena Toshinden sucked too.

I also don't see what's so special about Halo... at all. I see nothing interesting about that game.

-Just about any popular shooting thing from the last ten years.
-Just about any popular rhythm game from the last 100 years.

Zelda is the big one for me. The games look pretty but I can't play any of them for more than 20 minutes without getting totally bored.

And 99.5% of all RPGs. I like games in just about every other genre though.

I've never been able to get into Metroid or Zelda for some reason. I know there great games, I like watching others play them, but I can't last for more then an hour playing them myself. Especially the Metroid lines (I'm talking from Nes to now).

God of War: The battle system is WAY too shallow. That and I don't really like Greek that much. Well, somewhat, but I'm much more of a Norse fan.

Kingdom Hearts: Horrible camera, and just an overall poor battle system. That and I hate Haley Joel Osment with an absolute undying passion

Guitar Hero: It's just a fad, and I don't get it. Granted, I did play a lot of DDR for a couple years from 2004 - 2006, but that was it. I have a very specific "No Guitar Hero" rule in my house.

World of Warcraft: Not a PC gamer, and I really only want to play an MMORPG if I'm familiar with the source material. Other than Warcraft II, I don't know much about the lore. I want a Resident Evil, Phantasy Star, and/or Dragon Quest MMO. I'd play FFXI if it weren't so party-based (I prefer soloing, and will only team up for a "raid" if I absolutely have to).

I'm not too big on:

Halo (I enjoyed playing some of the multiplayer on Halo 2 but have never been able to get into the single player mode)

Final Fantasy VII & Beyond (I really like the early FFs but never could get interested in VII. Interestingly, I really like FF: Tactics Advance for the GBA and Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube)

Metroid Primes (the 2D Metroid's were great but I just don't think the series translates well to 3D)

MMORPGs (I have a bunch of friends that play or have played WOW and FF: Online but I never saw the point. Although, I did play Kings of Chaos for about a year at one point a few years back)

Modern PC games (after the days of Quake III Arena and Counterstrike I've not been able to really get into any PC games. Maybe Diablo II but that's from around the same time)

I could never get into Halo. Multiplayer was great, but the 1st level in single player didn't really pull me in.

Almost any turnbased RPG - For whatever reason, I could never get into turnbased RPGs. I just did not like how I had to leave everything to luck. I was, however, able to play the Mario RPGs and enjoyed what I played of Mother.

Rhythm games: Even though I played an instrument for years, I could never really play rhythm games. Well, at least the ones that required an extra peripherals...

Metal Gear - This is mainly due to a lack of interest on my part. I just never tried out the series, but I doubt I could do stealth games.

GTA - Ok, this one is just hard to explain. I tried playing Vice City, but it wasn't my game. I did enjoy the hacked version of GTA 3 that I had, but other than that I could never enjoy the game. Well, I guess I did enjoy playing San Andreas with my cousin, but by myself I've been bored with GTA.

I also can't get into Resident Evil 2 on the N64. I die every 5 minutes and have to repeat the same cutscenes over and over again, which I can't skip thanks to the incredibly stupid ink system. I loved the remake of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4, but I can't stand Resident Evil 2.

Before I even opened the thread I thought of Metal Gear and all of its sequels. Also, I had previously made several attempts to play Final Fantasy and just not been able to get into it, then I got it for PSP and i played it for a good while. I never beat it though because i dont have that kind of time on my hands. I can't play fighting games at all either, not once have i ever successfully pulled off a combo on purpose in any fighting game, no matter how hard i try.

Halo- It ok, and fun to play at a LAN, but not that great.
GTA any- Fun for about 20 minutes, then boring
Any Zelda in 3D- After A Link to the Past, it wasnt Zelda anymore.
Mortal Kombat- Loved Street Fighter, MK just sucked
Battlefield series on PC- Call of Duty kills Batlefied. BF is just horrible, even on my rig of awesomeness

I've tried a few times to get into Harvest Moon-MM, but it just isn't working. I really like Animal Crossing, especially WW, but Harvest Moon is probably the gamecube game I've spent the most time playing to least time enjoying. I even printed out a whole faq in a teeny tiny font. Maybe someday.

It's a secret to everyone, but Contra's always been too hard for me. I've enjoyed every main line Mario game I've every played, but I can't quite seem to get into SMW2-Yoshi's Island for some reason. I've probably played through SM Land 2 at least fifty times, but I've never finished Yoshi's Island. Heck, I've even finished Yoshi's Safari!

I like Columns alright, as far as Genesis puzzle games go, but I never sat and played it until the unused portion of my body was asleep like Tetris. I can't even really play Dr. Mario anymore. But I never got into Puyo Puyo/Dr Robotnik's Mean Fat Reducing Bean Machine. It was one of the first games I bought after getting my Nomad too. People like this, right? To me it seems less rewarding that Pac-Attack.

Ecco The mother fuckin' Dolphin.

The original Gran Turismo is the least controllable racer I've ever played. Not like overly touchy, I can get this, but just slow to react and seemingly unpredictable. Maybe I should try it again, but I still enjoy Ridge Racer more, and that was a launch title with 3 tracks and no endorsements.

And speaking of the Playstation, what kind of payola shenanigans were going on in the gaming press of the time when Battle Arena Toshinden came out? Wasn't this the best reviewed fighter prior to Soul Calibur? I seem to recall that EGM even gave it a perfect score. Graphics aside, the fighting engine isn't even fun. When it came out I bought Tekken instead based on the fact that you could fight as a bear. I was thirteen and that was still cool enough to warrant a fifty dollar purchase. It turned out to be really fun, and I always wondered if BAT was even better. Much later I bought Toshinden for $5 and almost returned it. Jesus.

Halo=overrated.
GTA was always repetitive to me, after 10 minutes of playing it gets old.
Kingdom Hearts is so kiddish it's cheesy.

I've enjoyed every main line Mario game I've every played, but I can't quite seem to get into SMW2-Yoshi's Island for some reason.

Ecco The mother fuckin' Dolphin.

I'm completely the same with SMW2, I've played all Mario games until my eyes bled but I cannot get into SMW2 for some reason.
And yes that Dolphin is one motherfucker;)

Generally speaking, I tend to not usually like any of the big, popular games. There are exceptions--I like almost all of the Mario platformers, and I like Guitar Hero a lot (although I bought the first one the day it came out, so I was ahead of the curve on it)--but Zelda, Metroid, GTA, Metal Gear, WoW, Smash Brothers, God of War, Halo, almost any sports, whatever... don't really like any of that.

Final Fantasy VII - I like it, really. But just, gah. It's boring and tedious at times. I spent so long hunting for it at a reasonable price that I made myself play it the whole way through.
Halo (all 3) - Once again, these aren't bad games. Just nowhere near what they're made out to be.
Most fighters - Minus MKII and the Street Fighter series, fighters bore me to tears.
Radiant Silvergun - After FINALLY getting this game working on MAME, I was underwhelmed. I greatly prefer Ikaruga and/or Mars Matrix
DDR - I feel stupid playing it.
Super Mario 64 - Came nowhere near close to the greatness of Super Mario World. Or any of the 2D Marios.
Super Mario Sunshine - Read above. Although, I love Luigi's Mansion.
Grand Theft Auto - I don't know, the gameplay has just always felt really shallow.
Most any FPS - I know I mentioned Halo already, but I think I should mention the category on a whole. I love certain FPS (such as DooM, Nexuiz, Quake, and Cube 2: Sauerbraten, Half-Life, etc.), but most just leave me wondering why I'm playing.
Pretty much every strategy game minus Battle for Wesnoth - I love the idea of RTS, but it's a little too frenetic for me. StarCraft almost gives me a seizure from trying to do everything at once. And most non real time strategy games are boring.
Battle Arena Toshinden - It was crap. Enough said.

On a side note, I really do love Guitar Hero. I rock (no pun intended) at the games, and it's a blast at parties. It's probably my most socially acceptable gaming addiction. Much better than saying Battle for Wesnoth (current "OMG THIS IS GREAT" game) when asked what I like playing. LOL

splinter cell - love mgs, but just couldn't get into splinter cell

metroid - sorry metroid fans, but backtracking is not fun. see: halo.

halo - this a series i tried to love, but just couldn't. despite boredom i finished the first game, never managed to finish the 2nd, and got about 2/3rds through the third one. it's great on multiplayer, but the singleplayer gets repetitive and/or frustrating too easily.

3d zeldas - everyone goes on about how godlike the 3d zeldas are, especially OoT. imagine my disappointment when i get the game home and can't play it for more than 20 minutes before getting bored out of my skull. btw i loved the original 2d zelda.

mario64 - i liked this game, but i don't consider it to be the golden standard of 3d platformers like a lot of people. it was fun, but camera issues and too much repetition made it a pain in the later stages.

fatal frame - everyone told me how frightening this game was. so much for that. 20 minutes of walking around, then 1 minute of running and taking pictures while your character gets caught on the scenery. sounds silly, but 'the suffering' gave me more of a fright.

gran turismo 3 - after playing forza, i decided i'd give this one a try. what a letdown. license tests, poor controls, and my favorite: grinding. all the work of an rpg without all the phat l00t.

prince of persia (3d) - let's just say i got tired of falling 5 feet and hearing the prince go "wait, that's not how it went."

jet grind/set radio - would have been an awesome freeroaming game (a la gta), but as is, the cops and timers make it way too frustrating.

infinity engine rpgs (baldur's gate, etc) - i made the mistake of playing diablo before trying these games. after diablo's smooth, fast-paced combat, going back to the stilted, clunky, ad&d-based combat was a pain even the party customization options couldn't sooth.

I could never get into: RPGs of any kind, stealth games, Super Mario 64, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros., GTA III and up (include almost all sandbox games here), realistic racing games, I enjoy FPS games to an extent but am no good at them at all.

probably a lot of other stuff too.

THe Grand Theft Auto series. I played III around when it first came out and didin't really know what the fuss was about and I skipped the next two after that. I recently rented IV and played that for about 2 hours and stil couldn't find myself wanting to play it.

Seems every post has Halo. I agree, thats the winner (or loser) for most "why the fuk is this popular?" category.I cant get into them either, ive had some amount of fun with rocket launchers and 00 gravity, but i tried 2 player coop for 3 hours. I had no desire to replay it.

Sports games..simulations like Madden, anyway. ugh. Give me Blitz or NBA Jam anyday. And yeah GTA games 3 and up are only fun when im messing around. I think Battle Arena Toshinden was too hyped, too. GamePlayers is to thank for that. Every issue mentioned it many times before and after it came out for a while.

I never got to really enjoy any Resident Evil or Tomb Raider games. In fact, to this day I tend to get lost in 3D games, though I really like some of them, like the GTA Series and Bully. I just can't figure out the maps properly.

I could never get into Final Fantasy 7. I even tried, I didn't get past disk one. Funny story, I got a Greatest Hits version at Target at the end of the PSOne era, when they were clearance-ing all the PS1 games. got it for like 15 bucks. I saw on the Digital Press forums that the game was selling quite well on eBay. So I tried my hand, got over 80.00 BUCKS FOR IT! I guess my not getting into the game preserved it quite well as it was in pretty much mint condition when I sold. Rock on!

Resident Evil -- Bought a PSX just for this game. But the controls are horrendous, and I couldn't aim and shoot at anything much less moving dogs. I ended up trading in the game and returning the PSX.

FF7 -- Bought my second PSX to play this game. Just the most boring game ever! 10 minutes of cut scenes at a time, loading times for each screen, and the same old battle mechanics. And I loved FFIII(IV, whatever). Sooo disappointed, I returned another PSX. Luckily, FF7 was just a rental.

Gran Turismo -- Bought a PSX for a third time for this game and FF Tactics. Tactics I enjoyed but never finished (both Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64 are superior), but I couldn't get into Gran Turismo at all. I never even got licensed -- I dunno, I just don't get the game. GT I got in a bargain bin, FF Tactics likewise, and the PSX was a bonus from work, so I still have it though it's been collecting dust for 12 years.

3D fighting games -- SFII is great, and MK has a certain charm, but the Tekken's VF's and Soul Caliburs of the world are too complicated/difficult for me to enjoy. I can watch people play, but I am so bad I them it's not even funny. I can't even beat anyone at SSB.

Speaking of which:

And speaking of the Playstation, what kind of payola shenanigans were going on in the gaming press of the time when Battle Arena Toshinden came out? Wasn't this the best reviewed fighter prior to Soul Calibur? I seem to recall that EGM even gave it a perfect score.
I remember that BAT was more of a tech demo that was considered so extraordinary at the time that the deficiencies in gameplay were glossed over. Obviously, its popularity evaporated after Tekken was released a couple of months later. But people were importing the JPN PSX before launch just to play BAT, which is hard to believe because it looks so shitty in retrospect.

I play guitar as well and have never really seen the draw to Guitar Hero(I've never actaully played it though so that may be why) I had ideas in my head as to what the game was and when I learned it was even simpler than I was thinking I was even more turned off.

And then you get the people who think they're actually learing to play a real guitar through it...

final fantasy 7 is the first one that comes to mind. the graphics made it nearly unplayable (i stand by my opinion that 32x graphics look better than psx graphics), and while i didnt get out of the city (I KNOW I WASN'T THAT FAR IN! though i was apparently 5 minutes away from getting out according to my friend) the story was completely forgettable, say what you will but if 3-5 hours into a game the story hasnt gone ANYWHERE the game probably sucks, even if there is another 700 hours of great stuff afterwards.

Another one I have to add: The Smash Bros. series. I understand the appeal of a hectic, easy to pick up, non-technical 4-player fighting game (and I love Power Stone 2). I understand the appeal of having a bunch of classic Nintendo characters thrown into the same game and beating each other up (and I love other cross-overs like Marvel vs. Capcom 2). But the actual gameplay of Smash Bros. just isn't very good IMO. I don't get how people can be such fanatics about it.

On a similar note, I really despise most of the Mario Kart series, particularly the one on N64, which is the one most raved about. The A.I. downright cheats. A lot. It's just annoying. Plus the tracks are kind of dull and too similar to each other.

Any 3d Mario game. I'm not a huge fan on the 2d's, but that's because I've yet to play many of them.

Madden games.

Metroid Prime 2 and 3. I love the original, but eh. Rest aren't the greatest games.

Metal Gear. Granted, i've yet to get past the second screen, but all the same, I'm not sure if I'll like it fully. I love the solid's though.

The original Metroid. Gah. That game is so hard, it's rather annoying.

I'm actually surprised no one said Pokemon. Just that great of a game I s'pose.

The one popular game I just can't get into is the Half Life series (1 and 2). I don't know what it is about the game, but I just don't enjoy it. I really don't understand why it won so many Game of the Year awards, when the first one has some horrific sound effects! The game is hard as heck, and there's no sense of where you are supposed to go. I always end up getting turned around. Not to mention there's hardly any ammo in the levels, and it makes for a very frustrating and almost impossible experience. The enemies are also cheap, and only a few hits will kill you, and there's not that many med pack stations, either. I have tried several times to enjoy it, but I just can't. I'm conteplating selling my copies of Half-Life for the PS2 and Half-Life 2 for the Xbox, as I don't play them since there's an odd thing about the game that makes me not enjoy it.

Another popular game I could never get into (literally, lol) is Dance Dance Revolution. I tried it one time, and I totally sucked. I'm not in the best shape, and my legs are also not so coordinated, so it ended up being hard and frustrating, lol.

Another one is the Elder Scrolls III Morrowind. Although Oblivion is a bit better, Morrowind is just a borefest for me. Unlikeable characters, a desolate world, not so great graphics, and confusing menus, makes this game a chore to play. The open end-ness of the game just didn't click with me, even though I love games like Grand Theft Auto III. I do enjoy Oblivion to a good extent, but I don't play it enough due to it being too big for my liking. Sometimes games don't need to be 100+ hours long to be fun. I don't care if the game takes you 5 minutes to complete, as long as it's fun and it makes those 5 minutes worthwhile, I'll enjoy it. If I play 100+ hours of the same game (with half of it traveling all over the place) I get bored easily. Once again, I don't understand why the game got so many awards, and I don't enjoy it hardly at all.

Definitely Metal Gear Anything, though I kinda liked VR Missions cuz it omitted all of that corny melodrama. Any fighting game, as well. Endless lists of button combo memorization feels too much like homework to me.

The Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid series. They just don't do it for me.

Metal Gear Solid and pretty much every other game ever where you have to sneak. I hate sneaking!

Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The controls are so unforgivably bad in those games that I always ended up quitting in a fury three missions in because I got screwed by the shitty driving/shooting/brawling mechanics for the one hundredth time and just drove around shooting pedestrians until I got bored and took the game out of the console forever.

Also, I never understood the affection people have for Sonic the Hedgehog. I enjoyed the first two Genesis entries, but nothing else I've tried since then has been even remotely good.

I could've sworn I read the thread title as "Bipolar games you're into."

that's the reason i never finished san andreas. i got vice city for the pc where you're not hindered by the controls and loved it. a couple of years later i tried sa on the ps2. big mistake. that's why i'm hesitant to get gta4 for the 360. unless they've sorted out the controls, i'll just wait for the pc port.

Halo - Played each of the series with friends, cannot for the life of me do solo. Don't follow the popularity

GTA Series: Watching a kid play the game for 7 straight hours will probably kill it for anyone I assume....

Final Fantasy VII - Tried three times to beat the game just because people implore me to....Still haven't....

Street Fighter - good story, but I'm not a fan of fighters that are not Mortal Kombat(yeah yeah it plays terribly compared to the SF series....)

Devil May Cry - Bought the 3 pack deal when it came out....Beat the first boss on 1 and haven't touched them since....Just seemed like a game that the only appeal is that the guy has white hair and has guns and a sword....

Madden - Not a fan of football and since you NEED to follow football in order to be good at anything more than season mode it never appealed to me...NCAA Football though...I can't get enough of it just because you just need to know how the game works...Not which player is better

Gran Turismo - Meh, not a fan of racing games in general

Call of Duty - Most FPSs bore me even with multi-player. Only FPSs that don't bore me are Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.

American RPGs -

At least Morrowind and Oblivion, they're just boring as all hell to me. Everyone goes on about how spectacular they are but it was just a snorefest for me. I may go back and play some more Oblivion, I don't want to just give it up.

Serious Racing Games -

Ridge Racer, Burnout - Yes. Gran Turismo - No.

FPS games that aren't mostly action -

For some reason, when I play an FPS I just want lots of action, that's it. Doom 3 was ok but Half Life just isn't cutting it for me.

Sports -

Goes without saying. Some extreme sports are fun however.

Too much strategy - strategy games -

Shining Force and Disgaea are fun, but something like ROTK or something where you have to control every last detail is just too much for me.

Final Fantasy 7. After 15 minutes of play time I turned it off and never returned to it again.

God of War: Killed the first boss, got a bit through the next level and never played it again. Its Meh.

Guitar Hero: I have no desire to even try it.

Guitar hero sucks if you really play the guitar. To me, it's nothing more than simon says touch the certain color on the really small guitar neck.

Wow, a great post/question. I'm pretty sweet on racing games and FPS, and some platformers and shooters.

1. I do not own any RPG games (does Zelda count?), so I haven't gotten into any of those. I cannot get into any RPG's, at all, ever.
2. I've also skipped every sports (Madden, Blitz, NBA, NHL, MLB, whatever) or extreme sports franchise since the PS1 (really like the first ESPN Extreme games on PS1, novelty wore off afterwards).
3. Donkey Kong Country games
4. Metal Gear series past the original on NES. Tom Clancy series as well as almost every other modern War Sim (after Nam)
5. Guitar Hero and Rock Band....pointless games IMO. If they actually played the notes you hit on the guitar, that would be more worthwhile. Great comparison by whoever said it was like playing SIMON (which I kicked ass at)!!!!
6. Street Fighter (more of a MK fan) and later Capcom fighting games.
7. Grand Theft Auto (maybe the most boring and pointless concept ever IMO).
8. Pokemon (it was big)
9. Starcraft and later incarnations and frankly all over Strategy games like Age of Empires, Civilization, etc.
10. Simcity series and likewise games...boring!
11. Tomb Raider (not one of them ever was even 25% as good as one of the LucasArts Indiana Jones games.)
