I've got some questions for the 360 users.
How much does the online cost? I'm planning on getting an Elite, but how are the failure rates compared to the other systems?
I know 360 has a market like the Wii does for download content. Whats the conversion rate? Like on the wii, 10 bucks = 1000 wii points, how does it work for 360?

Xbox Live service costs $49.99 for one year if you buy it for that duration (I believe it costs more per month if you buy per 3 months, etc.).
I have no experience with Elites yet, but I'm now on my third Xbox 360 Platinum. Some people never have problems, while others have more problems than I do (sending the machine back nearly 10 times). They constantly change the boards and specs of the new systems they put out so evidentially people are saying there are starting to be less and less problems.
The 360 has a strange conversion for its Microsoft Points used to purchase items online. 400 points is $5.

I am in the same boat as RS. I want an 360 but I'm trying to wait out and see if a superior design comes out.

Well, I have 3 and I have only had one problem and that was with the launch system.
The points for the games are of course different then they way they can get purchased. Basically the games are 400 points, 800 points or a couple at 1200 points. Around 5, 10 and 15 respectively.
Of course if you want to buy points they come in groups of 500 points, 1000 points and 2000 points so you always get to have some left over.
From what I know the systems keep getting better and better, so if you are buying a new system now you will probably be in good shape.

On xbox live, 1 point = 1.25 cents (or .0125 dollars)
e.g.
400 x .0125 = 5
800 x .0125 = 10

ms points are a real good way of losing track of what you're spending (i'm sure ms is counting on this). it's easy to blow 440 points on some new rock band tracks, but i might be more reticent if asked to pay $5.50.

I'd tell you to go for it. I've only had one issue with mine (purchased Dec 06) and that was a power surge issue (which MS did repair for me). Definately get the Elite though. I really wish I had waited for mine.

Grab your year membership from Circuit City when it's like 39.99, seems like it's that much all the time.

You can also save money by buying the live code and ms points on ebay. I refuse to pay full retail when I buy them.

I was also itching to get a 360 this week. I read about the new 65nm processor, that it doesn't really do anything in preventing the box from destroying itself, as it's the GPU that's pumping out the heat. The 360s with the new GPU, which supposedly won't melt after an hour, are said to ship this fall. So, I guess I'm waiting until then to get a 360. I refuse to buy into that "send it back 10 times" garbage.
Seriously, this shit is ridiculous. I wanna play Omega 5!

I don't think the red lights have to do with the system "Self destructing".. I think there are more factors, IE Humidity, dust and the ventliation the system gets. I've never had the 3 red rings problem with either of my 360s, My first 360 was the problem child though. (1 red light that would go away after resetting the system, The DVD drive not opening)
I use an elite now, The only problem I have with it is that sometimes it locks up for a bit if I hit the guide button just before a notification shows up. Keep in mind that I have over 70 gigabytes of demos, saves and whatnot on the hard drive so that probably slows it down.

Oddly enough, my good friend's Elite took a three red ring crap yesterday. His Elite was among the first ones produced, though, so I would imagine the ones on store shelves now would have the Falcon and all that good stuff in it. Only time will tell if these ones hold up or not. I've heard from a GameStop store manager they are anticipating the Arcade units to sell for $250 this holiday season so if you just need a new system and are forced to buy one, you can just slap your hard drive onto it. Since my latest Xbox 360 adventure deals with a defunct disc drive as opposed to red rings, I may have to take this route.

Although I know of several "close" 360's crapping out, I don't know anyone with a Falcon 360 that's had theirs fail (including my nephews who play theirs in 80 degree year-round weather in an un-airconditioned room). That being said they've only had it about half a year now :p

God I hope they're better. Mine was bought 6 months after launch. It died red rings 11 months after I bought it. Now the disc drive is giving me shit. Not sure if I want to bother though to have it fixed again it rarely happens. I kinda want a new one though for HDMI and a bigger HD and hopefully better reliability

I'd be hesitant to buy an XBL code from ebay....a lot of the codes up there will do you no good.
I paid about $35 for my 13 months....just watch buy.com and be patient.

My oringinal Xbox is about 5 years old and still going strong without any problems. I use it almost daily. My XP on my PC works way better than my friends PC with Vista. It shows what progress Microsoft is making.

The systems are much more stable than the launch consoles. I have yet to have any problems with my pro system, and I think it is pretty safe to buy one. I have never heard of any issues with the elite, but I'm sure their are scads of reviews on them if you want to read up on it. I say go for the elite, cool black system that looks amazing.
