View Full Version : NAVA Gamers Meeting, May 31st (NOW WITH PHOTOS)

Previously at NAVA...
- An Intellivision sat side-by-side with an XBox 360. For about an hour the Intellivision got more attention.
- A Gold Nintendo World Championship cartridge was sold from one attendee to another. Price: $12,000.
- The band blasted Ballroom Blitz. Babies bawled.
- Mario Bros were replaced by Space Fury Bros and a tournament ensued.
- Captain S and Little Miss Gamer from PBC Productions made guest appearances.
- Shelley Duvall's "It's a Bird's Life" was picked up and considered.
It just goes to show that ANYTHING can happen at a NAVA meeting. Pics or it didn't happen? Here you go:

May has an extra Saturday so don't get the dates confused! This is the weekend AFTER Memorial Day.
Digital Press, Screwattack and PBC Productions continue to bond, which is bringing more new faces into the mix. More new faces means more goodies to trade, more gamers to mingle with, more competition on hand. It's all good.
Here we go / Here we go / Here we go again. The more the merrier, so be a part of it!
When: Saturday, May 31st, noon to midnight.
Where: Digital Press Videogames: http://tinyurl.com/yscakm
What happens: Gaming, trading, tournaments, big prizes!
What can I bring: Snacks, soda and beer are always appreciated.

Sweet can't wait, I did a plug about the event over a noob toob so that we might get another site to mingle in with what we got. The good news is that I might be done school by then and actually *gasp* have a job so I can buy something!

I'm am uber excited about this month's NAVA meeting like I was with previous ones. I am bringing my 10 year old Sony Handycam camcorder this month so I can record stuff and post it online as soon as possible [I just got some blank tapes for it and am I am in the process of getting a new battery for it]. I am going to get some food for the event probably an hour or so before the tournament starts. Additionally once I get a Game Boy Player for my Gamecube I may finally have the means to directly capture my Game Boy Camera pictures and post them with better quality [I will likely repost last month's pictures as a test to see how they turn out. I will make another post in this thread once I do so]. Can't wait to see everyone at the meeting!

I won't be attending the May NAVA. That's the weekend I'm going up to New Hampshire to visit Ralph Baer and Funspot.

Great news everyone! I finally found a way to get 'direct' Game Boy Camera pictures [direct meaning directly off the console I am playing the Game Boy Camera on, not directly off the Game Boy itself] . Long story short I just had to use a Game Boy Player with my Gamecube in oppose to my Super Game Boy on my Super NES since the latter outputs incompatible RF singals that my video capture device cannot read. I posted the newer versions of the same April NAVA pictures in the same set with the older ones at http://www.flickr.com/photos/12733406@N02/sets/72157604759385146/
The quality seems a little on the low side so I may need to find a better video player program than VLC player that can take bigger high quality screenshots. For those who are curious I posted the original movie I took the screenshots from on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynNzvJfzdDQ

I'll also be up at FunSpot, I've had the room reserved for a while now. Ralph's going to be there again this year? Cool. Never thought I'd get to meet him three times. He's a really nice guy in person. Last year I got my Simon autographed by him, since I got the book at the last Philly Classic.
We WILL make it in June. I got a lot of stuff I need to pick up for my new Saturn. So have a good one this month guys.

If no one else takes you up on this, I will. I just sold my store's last Rock Band and was debating about buying another. It's nice having the space back but we set the game up in the store from time to time and it seems weird that we don't have one for sale.

Sarah and I and TheSmirk will be making the trek up north this month, yay! We may be bringing a guest, or the guest may be bringing himself, I haven't heard back yet. I think I'm going to unload my N64 and smattering of games this time. And hopefully someone will grab my Joy Balls and take them home this time, and not just fondle them like Frankie. As per usual, here's my pre-NAVA listing of what I'll be bringing for trade (or sale ... cash is fine, but I'm just going to spend it on games ... or heroin ... but probably just games, so trades are preferred.) Items with major interest/sold have notices' in red.
One 4 GIG Widescreen style MP4 wrist watch
(GOBLIN has official first dibs on it as of now.)
http://zedomax.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/chinavasion-watch.jpg
Features:
MP3/WAV playback (Supports multiple raw folder formats, drag & drop! Playlists, Shuffle, Equalizer, etc.)
Video playback (Video files must be converted to it's propriatary format with included software CD)
Pictures (JPEG, BMP, GIF, etc.)
E-Books
FM Radio
Built in Voice-Recorder
Built in Speaker (it's LOUD!)
Standard headphone jack
Rechargeable battery, lasts about 6 hours per charge (Charges & connects to PC via USB)
...OMFG it tells time too!
Includes:
Software CD
AC charge cable
USB cable
Headphones
This thing is VERY cool, and even if you don't use it for anything other than a 4 GIG USB storage solution, I'm going to be ULTRA reasonable with the asking price. So, be there early if you want it. (Or PM me.)

I can't really speak for Sniderman but at this point it doesn't look like he's coming to the May NAVA.
June's NAVA is going to be an absolute zoo as we're expecting The Angry Video Game Nerd, and you may see another game show in the store with Screwattack vs. PBC Productions vs. Digital Press! This is all tentative but probable.
July's NAVA we're going to try a "NAVA BBQ" complete with outdoor grill. Still in the planning stages.
So May will be the last normal NAVA for awhile, I think. Just helping those who are planning trips.
Never dull, eh?

Awesome Joe, I'm already looking forward to next month's meeting. Speaking of which, I would love to help out, if you need burgers or hot dogs at the July meeting or sumthin' for the NAVA BBQ I can hook a brother up :)
Also Joe, I question if I may- What is gonna be set up this month? Brawl? Rock Band? if any, I would be more than happy to bring down a GH controller or Gamecube controller, let me know.
SPEAKING OF AVGN, Does anyone have a Phillips CD-I Controller that they would like to donate to him? he's looking for one and if you wanna donate, let me know :D
UPDATE:
He's currently looking for:
Turbo Express
Atari Jaguar Games
CG4 Games
Maniac Mansion (NES)
CD-I Controller
Megaman 1
Gremlins 2 the New Batch(NES)
If your selling at NAVA any of these, or wanna be awesome and donate, let me know

I can't wait to come to the meeting. If everything works out correctly about 3-4 of my friends will be coming along. I’m going to bring my Gamy Boy Camera as per usual and also going to bring my old Sony HandyCam Camcorder as well. I have the capability of uploading all the video I take onto youtube by June 1st so if anyone wants me to take any footage of them and post it online just wave me down at the meeting [I will likely be on the computers in the back most of the time]. I hope to record the entire NES tournament, hopefully I do a good job at it [my tripod will be my best friend]. One real quick question: Can anyone PM me the user name and password for the Steam games [Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, etc] on the internet café computers?

I'm feeling pretty well after my fractured nose closed reduction surgery I had yesterday; I think I am going to make it tomorrow. Although I am not sure if I will stay my usual noon to midnight routine, since I have this stupid cast and my nose is constantly running. I hope there is a retro tournament in which case I will try to stick around for that. If I come, I will be looking to trade for an official PS3 remote, decent Blu-ray movies, a nice condition colecovision and any 2600 games I don't have.
I'll bring my Rock Ban since Joe expressed interest in it. Though I'm not sure if I will get to putting it back in its box before the gathering!

[*slaps self in face*] Sorry for my stupidity. I did not mean any ill by asking for the Steam password I just thought off the back of my mind that I should ask because I ran across the password prompt during the last NAVA meeting and I just assumed everyone knew the password [like we all do with the logins in the computers themselves] in oppose to Steam not being set to auto-login. Rest assured I do own both the original Counterstrike and Counterstrike Source through my own Steam account but my friend and I felt it would be mildly unsafe to use our accounts on public computers so that is what prompted me to inquire. Sometimes it would really help if I thought before I spoke sometimes but it seems I am doing that less and less these days. Can’t wait to see everyone at Digital Press tomorrow!

I was planning on coming out, but two things stopped me:
1. Had a medical emergency about 2 weeks ago that I'm still sort of dealing with.
2. The biggie - The price of gas to drive from Ohio to NJ is a bastard this time around. I have $$$ to spend on the typical goodies, but I'd be dipping into that fund just to make it out there and back.
So I'm gonna sit out this month, but plan to come out next month when I have more coin to toss around and after I've healed up a bit more. Or I may make plans to hit the BBQ in two months, as I'm a sucker for a feedbag. ;)

It looks like I will be attending for the first time in quite a while. I'm still pulling my stuff together, I'm likely to show up in the early afternoon for a few hours.
Does anybody have any interest in a homemade Pong System? It's as heavy as a boat anchor so I'm only bringing it if there is interest. It was made in the late 70's, based on plans from one of the electronics magazines. I bought it off a real old timer about 10 years ago and just never got around to it. Now it is just taking up space, and I want it gone. If there is no interest I'll just gut the switches, save the main boards, and then toss the case.
Don't be too scared as it actually looks much worse then it really is. The main board is in remarkably good shape, as is the secondary board which if I recall correctly is a randomizer circuit seen in the book "How to Repair Video Games". I also have all this guys lab notes scanned on a CD somewhere, which I will try to dig up. In reality anyone who has taken a high school class in electronics should be able to repair it. Some of the wires are loose as the guy who built it later used some of the parts (LEDs and the speaker) for a different project. I had envisioned fixing it up myself, placing it in a clear case, then having it permanently attached in my game room for all to admire. Now I have too many other projects, that this is no longer on the horizon. Hopefully someone wants this little piece of gaming history.
Send me a PM if interested so I know whether or not to bring it. We can work out a good deal for it.

Had an amazing time as usual. Finally got around to meeting Dylan, and hanging out with the DP crew in addition to the PBC productions people. Tournament this time around was a NWC repro cart, and with as many people as we had signed up for it, it took well over two hours, with the high score for the night being around 270K, if I remember correctly. All in all, a great time, and a good way to kick off the summer season at DP.

NAVA was good. The tournament was nice to have, but I found it very boring. Random retro is better - more fun, diverse, watchable and (infinitely) faster.
The fact someone had a GTAIV stolen from their trade box is terrible. I realize it was only a matter of time before this happened, but it still angers me. I would rather had it happen to me than a newcomer.
In the future we all have to make sure to watch our own, and especially others, items much more carefully. If I see any shady looking characters in the future rummaging through things I will verbally ask them if they need any help (even if they are going through someone else's stuff), just so they can easily understand I am watching them.

I had a great time, who know Mr. Mosquito's mini game would of had over 500+ plays on it during the NWC tourney? I say if the Nes is going to be taken out for a tourney make it interesting and do stadium events!

I overheard talk of this happening. It's a shame when a community of wholly cool people have to start looking over their shoulders during what's supposed to be a party because of this crap. I hope someone knows how to get that game back.

Definitely agree on the tournament idea, but someone really had a game stolen out of their box? Thats fucked up. Who did it happen to?

The GTAIV was stolen from a fellow from the neo-geo.com forums; I do not recall his name. He's not a member of this forum yet, and it was his first NAVA :( This isn't the impression we want first timers to have, and it's the only time I ever recall an item being stolen from a tradebox.
I felt really bad for him.

That really sucks. I mean that really fucking sucks. Is there anything that has been done/can be done for this guy? I'd hate to give him such a negative first impression of both the store and community by this happening to him.

^ I'll pitch in 5 bucks to get him another copy of the game.
